I can’t decide if the trim around the door should be white to blend more with brick so the natural door stand out more or keep the dark gray like in the photo. From a design perspective, what are your thoughts? A: Hi Kim! My advice would be to paint the door trim the same white color that is on the exterior of the home that is not the brick color. Because you have the black trim along the gutters and it’s such a large feature that you’re seeing I think that is plenty black trim. I would also suggest adding lighting to that alcove if there is none already. **Q: HELP my back: Cork flooring!** *(in Flooring)* I have a bad back and am considering cork floors in our new coop unit's galley kitchen. What are the pros and cons of a floating vs glue down cork floor? And, should I put the cork on top of the current ceramic tile floor in my kitchen (which is on top of concrete slab subfloor) or demo the tile, level the concrete, and then lay cork? I talked to one cork company and they said their floors are only 4 mm thick. That seems really thin to me and I'm wondering it will provide as much shock absorption as I am hoping for. Also, we are getting new cabinets. Should the cork extend under the cabinets, or only be on the galley floor part of the kitchen? My back thanks you for your responses! A: My advice would be to extend whatever flooring option you choose underneath the cabinets before hand if possible. Many houses have walls that are never going to be exactly even making the cabinets slightly off and also affecting where they sit on the floors. So if you have the option to lay the floors first it would be ideal. The comfort ability of the kitchen floor does depend greatly on the underlayment and subfloor. I can tell you from my experience that I layed a vinyl tile directly over old slate in our kitchen, and I wish I invested money in a more comfortable underlayment than just the leveling agent. It is still just so hard on your feet when standing in the kitchen cooking. If possible, I would recommend taking it down to the subfloor and installing new plywood if that’s in the budget,or working with the existing concrete subfloor as is and laying down a membrane or substrate that is going to have some give underfoot. Then the thickness of the cork shouldn’t matter quite as much because you’ll mostly be feeling the comfortability from the subfloor underlayment. Hope that helps! **Q: How would you improve this kitchen design?** *(in Remodeling)* I'm going to meet with a professional kitchen designer and a cabinet manufacturer next week. But! I want to come prepared with a good starting point. I've put together a few illustrations. Do you have any suggestions of things to try differently? Challenges: \- Determining how far the kitchen island should be away from that large front window. I know it is a-typical to put the kitchen in the front of the house like this. But I want to see if I can make it work. I hate the TV in the front of the house thing. I want to be peeling carrots and keeping an eye on the neighborhood, you know? \- Should the island be centered with the wall cabinets? I pushed the island a little closer to the window so that it is not sticking out into the dining area and blocking the walkway from the other exterior door into the hallway (marked in green). But centering the island would put the sink directly across from the range and also allow the two vertical slabs (underneath bar and backsplash) to line up. \- Island width. Right now, this island is made with 24" deep cabinets and a 15" overhang. The thinking behind this is that with a 39" deep island I will be able to use the same slab to cover the 24" depth of the counter against the wall. But! Do you think the island should be sized differently? \- How to add some little touches to the kitchen that make it feel less basic. My two thoughts right now are: 1. Do a custom wood siding for the kitchen island with slats that allow light to pass though. Kind of like a waterfall but with some light transmission. This will also introduce more vertical lines and spare me from the expense of a stone waterfall. 2. Use the same slab underneath the bar as in the countertop backsplash. This will give some cohesiveness to the kitchen. \- Is it going to be way too heavy to have all of the cabinets in black? The rest of the room is going to be painted swiss coffee white and have maple flooring. Lots of light comes into the space. But maybe I need to be more adventurous and utilize another cabinet color? A: Ahh I see what you mean. Perhaps creating bench seating with storage underneath there might be an option instead. **Q: What coffee table goes with mango wood tv stand** *(in Home Decorating)* Hi houzz community, We just bought the Anton Media Console from West Elm and having a hard time matching a coffee table to it. we have an L-shaped light beige couch and a washed out patterned carpet. What coffee table style/material/color should we go with? Thanks! Dora A: Hi Dora! Coffee tables with a wood leg accent would match well but not be to matchy. For shape, I love pairing L shaped sectionals with rounded edge coffee tables. Makes it so much easier to get around the entire couch without scraping a knee! 😂 I’ve attached a couple examples of coffee tables. Hope this helps! **Q: Need help with this fireplace!!!** *(in Home Decorating)* We currently have this awkwardly massive fireplace and due to the specs of the actual firebox it must be this size. With that being said no we are not going get rid of it, we just need help making it look better. Open to any color, material and helpful suggestions. Thanks! A: I would suggest new tile with clean lines and perhaps adding MDF board and batten/molding to give the mantle and the wall behind the more connected feel. Perhaps a design like this. **Q: What color sink/faucet for my kitchen?** *(in Appliances)* I want to replace the current sink with a granite composite one. My appliances are stainless steel, hardware and light fixtures almost black, white backsplash. Sink colors are black, brown, gray, dark gray, white. What about faucet color? Thanks so much for any advice, much appreciated as I try to update the kitchen around the oak cabinets.
