It was an already made modern fixture "discontinued" at the local lighting source I depend on for fixtures. All else in picture is custom. Finish was "cerused ash" and gorgeous by my trusted woodworker source. My client was older and many years experienced and familiar with art and fine materials so, price was not an issue to her. She wanted the "right thing" and a classic dressing table surface that could double as a writing surface was perfect for her. It is one of my favorite things I've worked on to this day so, thank you so much for noticing it. I have the cut sheet but, it does not want to attach here. It is a LIghtolier item. Maybe they will make you one or a local electrical fabricator can make something similar for you. A: I have clients at all budget levels and it's just common sense to view one's home / real estate through the filter of "increasing the value or decreasing the value". Realtors do it all time. I have no problem harnessing my consultation to my client's criteria whether it's monetary or a paint color. I have perfect faith in my ability to design a solution (at any price point) that a client will care about and want to implement. I say that from experience not from ego. One of my first questions to homeowner's usually is related to how long they plan to live in the home and their answer helps me guide my "best advice" for them from there. Sometimes we do have to give a client disappointing answers or help them dial down their remodel or improvement ambitions but, that just goes with the territory. Nevertheless "design" planning has value whether improving a reading corner or a whole house. It doesn't just change the home or room, it can change us inside and we can bloom. I love the look you created. A: Thank you for your compliments and thank you for your question. These cabinets were built by Stone Creek Furniture for me and my client and using my design layout and fee structure as a "trade professional". The finish was almost a "natural" on "KNOTTY ALDER". Alder is not a super expensive wood and the knotty alder has charm, warmth and character. I know Stone CreeK Furniture takes special care in the wood quaity and grades they order and they take great care and pride in building an old fashion solid wood cabinet box. Probably they order a pretty nice "wood grade" of knotty alder as wood comes in many prices points and qualities from the many, many lumber sources out there. I can highly recommend Stone Creek Furniture for cabinetry and to give you the special attenton that makes for a great end result. Thanks for asking. **Q: Help! I need help choosing finish and style of foyer lighting!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I desperately need help choosing a new lighting fixture for our second story foyer! The current finishes I am considering is antique gold or a Matt gold, bronze, and I thought about wrought iron black, but may be too heavy. I like the current style ( of course this is a tacky contractor grade shiny brass YUK!). I also like cylindrical styles or the square?rectangular cage style. Traditional or transitional. My walls are grayed down "gold", red based "oriental rugs "from Pakistan. Our new front door has black wrought iron inlays and a bronze handle/hardware, however the doors in our home has shiny brass fixtures and are staying until we finish our kitchen. The adjacent living room is the same gold color with Matt gold hardware for curtain rods. This is why Im having trouble determining the finish. Im leaning towards Matt gold finish. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! As well as instructions for choosing an appropriate size. A: Perfect! Your analysis is pretty good. We mix and match finishes a lot more these days which is more interesting in the long run but, can be kind of easy to get side tracked or loose the aesthetic focus. If you try to keep a mantra in mind as you go it will help. Filter all your decisions through your mantra like, Is this fixture really "simplified classic" etc.... I do think your taste is pretty "timeless classic" and I want to give you some pointers on furniture with your sofa but, I don't want to jump ahead to an area you are not ready to focus on. Please write again and show me items you are considering as I do not want to be taken too. literally. I prefer to rely on showing you a "visual" of what I mean and not rely so much on the written or spoken word. It is more creative and artistic this way too. For example I said black but, once you look at more upscale furnishings and fixtures, black comes a lot of ways. Black can be "off black, brown black, almost black etc.... Now to contradict myself I will back up and say if you make a decision to bring in an "iron look" at the staircase then I WOULD REPEAT this element again in other architectural features like light fixtures and window treatments. I think you should just decide room to room because, you have items already and the rooms look and feel pretty good....they just require some "finesse and artistry" to get them a little more refined and finished. I love this project and I'm not always drawn to traditional but, your pieces, home and taste are pretty "timeless" so, I really like that when some present day living and ambiance can be brought in. Like I said I'm much better with imagery and visuals and more frustrated by word descriptions so, if you wish to forward and share pictures or questions I'm happy to assist. Naomi Siegler **Q: Where is the back splash tile from?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: This backsplash is from Walker Zanger collection: Waterfall and is the Earth River Pattern. It is natural stone and does require the stone to be sealed. The material used at this backsplash made sense for a kitchen not used heavily. For a family home with a very active kitchen I am not so sure I would use a stone product that needs sealing every few years or so. Not that you asked but, just to thoroughly qualify my specification to you and why this material was used aside from the fact that it is really beautiful! All stone is different and runs in lots so, you might want to cherry pick your stone material if you can and if not just remember that all stone has variations and colors that may be somewhat different from a showroom sample. This backsplash in the photo also, received a treatment of "STONE ENHANCER" coating as well as the sealing. Stone enhancer is meant to bring out the color more strongly in natural stone and in this case it worked very nicely. Good luck and thank you for your great question.
