Bickford and Company is an innovative team of specialized architects and designers dedicated to providing superior custom residential design services and to practicing a personal architecture based fundamentally on the individual needs and desires of each client.
 
In designing both new homes and home renovations, we practice “personal architecture.” By this term we mean individualized residential architecture, developed through a team approach involving not only our staff of professional designers but also the builder and especially the client. We take great pride in creating client-centered custom designs, and in resolving difficult or unusual circumstances to achieve the result best suited to the client. Bickford & Company makes it a point not to have a signature “style.” Our principal designer, Scott Bickford, stresses the client’s preferences more than his own artistic expression. We work within context as much as possible, designing with respect for the project’s surroundings, be they a rural setting, a historic neighborhood or a brand-new suburb. We regard the house not just as an abstract exercise of the designer’s artistic virtuosity and technical skill, but also – indeed, primarily – as an adjunct to the client’s lifestyle and as an expression of the client’s character, values and status.
 
Furthermore, by maintaining a close working relationship with both the home builders and their subcontractors, we are able to understand their concerns and difficulties in the field. This connection helps us to ensure that our plans are practical and realistic. Insight derived from this relationship enables us to develop one-of-a-kind designs that are innovative and exciting, yet buildable.
 
Our professional goal is not to design what we ourselves would like to live in, but to advance the practice of personal architecture. The client is the focus, though we are also cognizant of the environment of which each project is a part, and of the requirements and abilities of each of the builders with whom we collaborate. For the client, this inclusive, integrated approach results in a distinctive, well-made home that both complements its setting and, in turn, serves as a compatible setting for the manner in which the client wants to live.

> We recently completed a beautiful home designed by Scott Bickford in the Shawnee area.  This is just one of many projects we have had the privilege to work with Bickford and Company on over the years.  Scott is extremely creative, can bridge many different styles of homes, and is very reasonably priced.  His calm and caring demeanor makes for a wonderful design process.  We would highly recommend this firm.

> We were involved in a major remodel. We worked with several members of  this firm in the process. We encountered several  issues with both the timelines  and the level of  detail  of the final product. The plans  were constantly delayed by issues of questionable believability...from  medical issues of the team members  to  several weeks off of other  team members  during which there was no coverage or urgency  to complete the work.  When the plans  were rendered,  and the construction started,  the  elevations of the project were off  substantially requiring several and major  job site  modifications. When portions of the plans  were not complete, and the builder asked for more detailed renderings of aspects of the project,  not only was this  turn around  slow, but there were additional charges  issued...even though the  builder plans were  reported to be comprehensive and complete. In doing this all over, I would prefer a company that was timely, complete and accurate, terms that certainly do not describe our  experience here.

As a Landscape Architect, I truly respect and appreciate their creativity, as well as how easy they are to work with. Paint color

A: Sorry, the interior designers make the paint selections, I create the architecture.

**Q: what type of wood and stain was used for the beams?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The builder and interior designer were in charge of that part of the design. Most of the wood trim was knotty alder and the stain was custom mixed on site. I have to assume that the beams are also alder and I have no idea what the stain formula is. To obtain a rustic look, two or more stains are used for shading.

What type of cabinets are tehse
We have very natural wood cabinets but are looking for the darke accents that you have here on the edges? Is that something we can ask when we have them refinisehd? :) Good quality cabinets

A: If I remember correctly, they are alder. As is typical in Kansas City, the were built locally and finished on site by the painter. The shading is something the guys while staining the cabinets, beams and trim.
