One of the big challenges was a considerable number of different roof lines, and may areas with low ceiling height. The dream was to have a good size master suite with sitting area, a work space with desk, nice bathroom with plenty of space, a second functional bedroom, ample closet space - the original space did not allow any shirts to be hung up without the hangers being turned at an angle because there was not enough depth, and the hope to squeeze in a sauna. All of this while being cognizant of the time frame the house was built, to carry the details upstairs, while creating a European type feel. > > It really was amazing that Chris could walk around the different areas of the house, figure out where structural support items were present, and truly have the vision to completely redesign the space. The old narrow steep stairwell was replaced by one that completely flows straight up as you enter the house. (Much more eye appealing and so much more functional). The smaller rear windows were removed and are large rear arched window was installed completely opening up the room and creating an amazing open space. (Funny enough I wasn't sure on going this route, but talking it through with Chris, and seeing some of his past projects, I decided it was for me. It was one of the best decisions for the space). After interviewing several local architects with credentials fitting our needs, we quickly settled in on Chris shortly after meeting him. Of the five architects we interviewed, it was Chris' experience, process, demeanor, and honesty that drew us to him. With plans to add-on to our 100-year old Webster Groves home, we knew choosing the right architect would be the most important decision we'd make in this process. Shortly after signing an engagement letter with Chris, he swiftly moved us into the "discovery phase" where his approach was helpful, illustrative and directional. We began discussing ideas for our new 2-story addition that we'd never thought of before. His approach of presenting us 3 different scale design options, choosing one, and then proceeding to 3 more detailed design options, was simple yet productive. After finalizing our design, Chris walked us through the survey/engineering/permit phase; and once blueprints were in hand, he helped us organize early bidding with general contractors with whom he'd worked with in the past, that might best fit our needs. That being said, we chose a general contractor we had some experience with and that came highly recommended, and Chris quickly engaged our GC and developed a relationship with him that made the construction phase of our project easier to navigate. All of the details that were so important to us were communicated by Chris to our GC and the finished project is phenomenal. We would recommend Chris to anyone. We wanted to keep our beautiful old home in a desirable neighborhood but expand it to include large spaces for family and entertaining. Our project included a new kitchen and hearth room, a screened-in porch, a walk-out lower level rec room and a new bathroom. The addition was approximately 1,500 square foot on the main floor and 1,300 on the lower level. Also, the original house was renovated to include a laundry/mud room, another new bathroom and an open center hallway leading to the new space. Outdoors, a new front porch, front walk, driveway, back patio and shed were also added. Improvements were also made to the original garage. The project was complicated because of the tie-in with our older home, both aesthetically and in terms of the construction requirements. Chris has a lot of experience and is very creative with many unique and interesting ideas which improved our project significantly. One of the most significant was the ability to utilize the grade in the backyard to create a walk-out lower level. He is very knowledgable about municipal code requirements and as a result, we had no follow up or rework required after submitting plans to the city for review/approval. He did a great job coordinating several builder walk-throughs and the entire bidding process. He was always available throughout construction for any questions that arose and to provide ongoing advice. The project turned out amazing! One comment that we have heard over and over again is that the new space "does not look like an addition and matches the original house perfectly." The wood floor was an existing 2-1/4" wide red oak from the early 70's as the kitchen was the formal dining room before the renovation.
