> We had the pleasure of working with Wynand Rutten Design on a renovation of our 50-year old kitchen/laundry/bathroom, which was overdue for an update.
>
> Not only did Wynand incorporate our demanding "wish list”, it was brilliantly accomplished, while preserving the feel of our tiny 90-year old country home.
>
> Even though the area footprint did not change, Wynand managed to increase the useable space by well-chosen cabinetry and improvement of workflow. We went from having a kitchen/bathroom that was an awkward and difficult to work in, to a beautiful kitchen that was functional for more than one chef. The redesigned bathroom was cleverly divided into a powder room and separate shower room.
>
> Wynand personally chose, ordered and supervised the installation of our cabinetry, flooring and lighting. He also made himself available at all stages of the project to troubleshoot the inevitable surprises that come up when you renovate a 90-year old home.
>
> Wynand Rutten Design gets our highest recommendation for creativity, functionality, professionalism and as a bonus, he is very easy to work with.

**★★★★★ — Linda Garand, May 2017**

> Renovation of damaged bathroom. A modern touch was added with stand-up tub and separate showers, Wynand managed to keep the cabinets by changing the top, thus creating a modern look while keeping the budget down.

**Comment from Wynand Rutten Design:**

> Thanks Linda for your review.
> I enjoyed working on your bathroom design. Even though we had a couple of hiccups along the way I think the end result turned out really well. I am happy you are satisfied with your new bathroom, it certainly is more functional now, and complimentary to the spirit of design of previous renovations.

**★★★★★ — Action Group of Companies, April 2017**

> We have worked with Wynand Rutten Design on many different projects, both commercial and residential, and he has always been an absolute pleasure to work with.
> He is very knowledgeable, creative and versatile, yet always remains practical in regards to choosing fabric and design options.
> He listens to the client and works closely with them every step of the way to ensure that, together, they will achieve exactly what is wanted.
> He is very respectful of deadlines and budgetary expectations.
> Wynand is a problem solver and will always come up with solutions to potential roadblocks. He offers advice and guidance where needed, but always remains professional and patient when dealing with the client.
> Overall, Wynand is an exceptional designer to work with time and time again. We couldn't be happier with his services and the outstanding quality of his work.
> We highly recommend Wynand Rutten Design for any size design projects!

**Comment from Wynand Rutten Design:**

> Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a great review.
> Working with you on various projects has been a rewarding experience and I am very pleased that you are happy with everything we've achieved. Some of the design challenges we faced forced me to "think outside the box" and made me exercise the "little grey cells"! I love the varied nature of your projects and challenges they bring.
> I'm looking forward to further collaborations!

> Wynand introduced balance between creativity and practicality to our projects. With his keen intuition he kept projects on time and on budget. We appreciated his ability to design flexible yet dynamic spaces. This experienced professional brought a calming, and collaborative approach to our team. He was a pleasure to work with.

**Comment from Wynand Rutten Design:**

> Thank you Robert, for your review.
> Working with you and your group on these projects has truly been a pleasure for me. Juggling several projects at the same time required close coordination.
> I feel we were able to successfully marry and adapt the original vision with rapidly changing requirements and budget (in one project). This takes teamwork! The end results are very satisfying.

**★★★★★ — Kai Bjorn, Feb. 2017**

> Wynand was a pleasure to work with. The stress is always high when you do renovations. He was a calming influence on the project. Knowledgeable and professional at all times. His tradesmen were highly skilled and very polite.
>
> Wynand has good control of the budget and the job site. I would refer him with confidence.
>
> We appreciate his skills and are enjoying our reno's
>
> Kai

**Comment from Wynand Rutten Design:**

> Kai,
> Thanks for your great review! Any renovation can be stressful, especially when you're living in the middle of the construction and mess. I've always viewed my role as "stress reliever" by keeping you well informed of all aspects of the project and I am glad to see that you appreciate that. For someone to say that they're enjoying their renovations is very gratifying for me as a designer.

**★★★★★ — Caroline Desrosiers, Feb. 2017**

> I would highly reccommend Wynand Rutten Design to anyone looking to hire a designer who really listens to his clients and delivers in everyway. Wynand is absolutely a pleasure to work with. He is creative, honest with really great insight for working with all personnality and taste. He accomplished two projects for me, a house and an appartment. He was able to make my places look fabulous and all within budget. I have a lot of compliments from guests.

- [Modern Penthouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modern-penthouse-pj-vj~2458515)
 - Location: Montreal, QC
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This project entailed gutting an older unit on two floors and re-imagining the space from nothing. The clients, a sophisticated couple, wanted a very modern space that flowed well for entertaining large groups. the space needed to be functional for day to day living as well. As the space is very open, Many of the less glamorous functions, are completely concealed in custom designed, easily accessed furniture or built-ins until needed. For example; the home office, which contains filing, fax, com…
- [Golden Mile Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/golden-mile-residence-pj-vj~2458677)
 - Location: Montreal, QC
 - Photos: 14
 - Description: Over the years several apartments had been joined without any major renovations, the end result being a series of disconnected spaces. My clients who had two older children mandated me to completely re-plan and design new living spaces to suite family living and casual entertaining. The interior design, while essentially contemporary, reflects and respects the architecture of the heritage building.
- [Home Theater](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/home-theater-pj-vj~2261053)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 4
 - Description: this home theatre was built into the basement of a client's house. The client wanted a simple but effective decor. The ceiling needed to be kept accessible so use was made of drop-in ceiling tiles made to look like a coffered ceiling. All of the audio video equipment is located in a ventilated space concealed behind a wall panel
- [Bungalow Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bungalow-renovation-pj-vj~2241122)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 18
 - Description: This modest mid century bungalow was updated to suit the new owners needs. Walls were knocked down in order to create a larger living area with room for a grand piano, and a bedroom was sacrificed in order to enlarge the master bedroom, create a large bathroom and walk-in closet/dressing room. To unify the various areas, the existing floors were re-laid in all the same direction and stained very dark chocolate. The dark floors make the space feel larger and unite the areas. In the evening under…

 - Location: Not specified

 - Description: The client's brief was to gut a dated bathroom with a built-in corner tub, tiny shower and 1970's light oak vanity cabinet with a single sink. They requested a large steam shower with a built-in seat and a vanity cabinet with two sinks. By reconfiguring the room layout, I was able to incorporate a free standing bathtub and separate the toilet from the main part of the room. This bathroom features a heated floor and a sill-less shower. The glass and marble mosaic tile adds texture and interest to…

 - Description: This 1952 bungalow was tired and in need of an update. With three small bedrooms and only one tiny bathroom it was outdated and did not suit today's lifestyle. Worst was that the powder room as only accessible through the kitchen. The main part of the brief was to create a master en-suite, comprising of the master bedroom, dressing room and a bathroom with a soaking tub and separate shower. The Interior was pretty well gutted, re-planned and reorganized to bring it up to today's standards. The t…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Great Color on the walls** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the paint color you used on the wall?

A: Benjamin Moore Almost Black \# 2130-20

**Q: Love the area rug. can you tell me who the supplier is?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: the carpets were designed by my studio and made by Tapis Diurne, Paris, France.

**Q: Cabinets to the ceiling?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a small galley kitchen and we are going to be replacing the cabinets. Right now the shelf sizes are weird and the spacing above the cabinets are just short enough that nothing taller than a 16oz glass could fit. So I was assuming we would just make the new cabinets a little lower (there is space underneath as I think the whole box sits a little high. Then I wondered if there should be a space at all? I started googling and noticed a lot of people put a false front above their cabinets. So I'm thinking of having the top cabinets have glass doors so I can store my decorative dishes there (and not have to use up prime reachable cabinets that I currently have the dishes I use in). Thoughts? Are there considerations such as kitchen size, ceiling height, etc?

A: In a small kitchen, storage is always needed. Make the cabinets go to the ceiling!
I like your idea of putting glass doors at the top and putting your decorative dishes in those cabinets. You could install some LED lighting in those cabinets as well to highlight the dishes and give some ambient lighting to the room.

**Q: Help me! I need a window cover!** *(in Before & After)*

I am finishing an attic which will be a teen girl's bedroom. We want to have this window open most of the time to the beautiful view. However, she will need to cover the window when needed for privacy. I can't use a straight rod because it will not fit across to cover (and be able to fully open) the width of the entire window. I don't understand what I would need to do for an arched rod. Any suggestions? There will be a bench seat the full length of the wall below the window covering duct work.

A: It's such a beautiful window. This type of window always presents a challenge for window coverings! I see that in your photo the frame mouldings have not yet been installed. How about making the mouldings bigger and wider, enhancing the architectural presence of the window. Make it a statement!
Do you need to black out the room at all? For a more contemporary solution, if the window frame is deep enough, you could install a blind inside the window frame and have it custom fit so the top of the blind follows the arch at the top of the centre window. If you don't need to black out the room, you could install a "bottom up" blind, again, inside the window frame and be able to raise it as far as you need for privacy. The drawback of this solution is that you won't be able to raise the centre blind to the top of the window arch.
Alternatively, a traditional way of dealing with this type of a window is to install a simple rod across the window at the top of the side windows and install curtains that you could draw closed when privacy is required. The top of the centre window would always remain uncovered.
Hope this helps!

**Q: Bosch oven door glass shattered during self clean** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Big surprise today! I used the Bosch self-cleaning option for the first time on our 2013 Bosch HBL-8450UC oven. During the process, the inner middle glass shattered. Can one use the self-cleaning option on a Bosch, or is that just to make the sale?

A: My Bosch oven is just under two years old and this is the first time I decided to use the self cleaning mode after roasting thanks giving dinner yesterday, I decided to use the self cleaning function today.
I opened the door after the cleaning was finished and saw the inner glass had shattered during the cleaning. I also have a Bosch speed oven and am having problems with that too. I'm underwhelmed with the quality since these are expensive appliances.
I will be calling Bosch tomorrow to see what they will do about it.
