Charles Di Piazza Architecture (CDPA) is a practice that designs high quality modern architecture. We put a strong emphasis on the inventive use of building materials, the qualities of light and the relationship between the building and its surroundings. We consider these issues to be more important than working in a particular style and hope that each project will be an original interpretation of the client, site, program and budget.

For us, practice is understood as a range of activities which are all necessary to each other - design of buildings, fittings and furniture; making buildings, installations and models; connecting speculation and practice, lecturing and writing and teaching about architecture, collaborations with craftsmen, artists, and consultants.

> We met Charles Di Piazza when he worked with Chris Cobb, and they worked together to plan and design the complete renovation of our 60s ranch house. From the very beginning of the project each facet of life in a home was carefully attended to by both Charles and Chris. From asking us about how we bring in groceries or where we prefer to leave our trash bins to exploring the aesthetic influences of our favorite items, these professionals demonstrated that they are deeply committed to creating beautiful and striking structures that are inhabited by complicated families in comfort and functionality. For instance, when we were concerned about the natural light in different zones of our living areas, they built a model of our future home and took photographs of it throughout the day to capture the movement of light and shadow in the spaces they designed. Further, I have noticed that our input trumps their own ideas. They were both very quick to scrap an interesting idea when we offered a counter-idea or stated that it didn't seem to fit with our goals overall. In other words, Charles is incredibly creative, but not at all too proud or overbearing when it comes to the wealth of ideas he brings to a project. I found Charles to be specifically attuned to interpreting the ideas of a lay person into the form and function of a living work of art. It has been a pleasure working with Charles and to watch his work unfold.

**Comment from Charles Di Piazza Architecture:**

> Tim,
> Thank you for the kind words and for trusting me to collaborate with you and Erin. It was a pleasure to assist you in fulfilling your vision!

**★★★★★ — Whitney Roebel, Sept. 2020**

> We had the pleasure of working with Charles for our recent home renovation. We reworked our midcentury home to make better use of our space, bring in more natural light and maintain the original charm that the house offered. Charles helped us create a fresh space that is functional as well as gorgeous. He provided many terrific ideas and walked us through the entire process. Charles additionally was a wonderful listener and incorporated our specific needs and requests into our project beautifully. I would absolutely recommend Charles to anyone looking to update, renovate and beautify their home.

**Comment from Charles Di Piazza Architecture:**

> Whitney,
> Thank you for your review. And thank you for trusting us; we enjoyed the process as much as you did.

**★★★★★ — Jill Wilkinson, Sept. 2020**

> My husband and I have worked on three projects with Charles: one new house and two remodels, one of them extensive. We both like architecture for many reasons, and we wanted to keep that in mind as we went along. Charles seemed always aware of the principles of good architecture and the creative application of good design. He taught us a lot as we worked together.
> The houses were in a University of Texas neighborhood where many are rentals and are left to degrade by absentee and disinterested landlords. Our goal was to make them whole using quality materials and workmanship, but also to make them aesthetically interesting. We hoped to keep them affordable yet not attractive to investors. Our overall goal was to better the neighborhood and to celebrate good design and architecture.
> Charles was an excellent partner for us in this enterprise.

**Comment from Charles Di Piazza Architecture:**

> Jill,
> Thank you for your review. And thank you for supporting sincerity and integrity of what we do, and even more than that, the quality of what we leave behind.

**★★★★★ — Patio Deck and Doors Upgrades. Business Office, Aug. 2020**

> Charles is a great Architect. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to educate and provide a great service.
> He has been great to work with on several occasions now and I very much recommend him and his work.

**Comment from Charles Di Piazza Architecture:**

> Thank you Trey; it's always a pleasure to be working with you!

  - Description: Charles Di Piazza founded Charles Di Piazza Architecture (CDPA) in 2012. He has over 25 years of experience as a studio leader, developing major projects in close collaboration with a range of complex public and private institutions. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he grew up in the French Riviera and studied at The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture before qualifying as an Architect in Texas. - Location: Austin, TX

  - Description: DOGTROT HOUSE refurbishes a bungalow from 1926 which has undergone numerous renovations. Surveys indicate that the house was originally a two-unit “dog trot”, a uniquely American typology, here re-interpreted in a contemporary configuration. Four independent ‘cabins’ sit between a deck and a roof. These units articulate two breeze-ways, ‘trots’, that separate functions and bring exterior features to the interior. Each cabin is singularly tasked for either Living, Cooking, or Sleeping. One trot a…

  - Location: Austin, TX
  - Photos: 21
  - Description: The house is inspired by the humble size and simple shapes of 1920’s bungalows. The design acknowledges the efficiency of bungalows while simultaneously addressing some deficiencies of the type, specifically, dark interiors and little connection with the remaining lot. The design of the Court & Corten House is centered on two facets: maximizing natural light through an entrance court; and using the virtue of the site, the majestic heritage oak, as a unique amenity (rather than obstacle) for deve…

  - Location: Austin, TX
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Cabanon is a fully-refurbished bungalow that shares a landscape with the Dogtrot House. It is a thoughtfully arranged refurbishment of a mid 20th century structure, and takes a straight-forward approach to the arrangement of rooms in a limited space: doors and passages are aligned, windows centered upon their rooms, and ceilings vaulted. The effect is such that the whole seems greater than the sum of its parts, a small collection of spaces is now perceived as more generous. By merit of shared co…

  - Description: Situated in a Historic Structure in Austin, the Windsor House proposes a high-end renovation that utilizes prefabricated elements. These create a series of intimate interiors, but also generous double-height great rooms that are filled with light. Pre-fabrication also allow for a close time frame between partial-demolition and finish, an important consideration that helps preserve the integrity of a historic facade.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love this house color! What is it? Thank you :)** *(in Photo Questions)*

I would love to know the brand and exact name of the exterior paint colors used for this house.

A: Hi Ana,
If memory serves me right, it was a historical reddish color. Definitely Sherwin Williams. most likely Roycroft Rose SW0034.
Hope this helps,
Charles

**Q: Love the coffee table where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Would love to find one similar aesthetic

A: Hi, we got the coffee table from Scott Cooner, a local home gallery here in Austin, Texas.

**Q: Wood stain color** *(in Photo Questions)*

what colour and brand is the wood stain?

A: The exterior is clad in weathering steel for the most part. The recessed areas and deck are lined with Ipe (brazilian walnut) which has been left untreated.
