It's not a butlers pantry as it doesnt connect the kitchen and dining areas as a pass through. It is intended to help keep the main kitchen area tidy and organized on a daily basis as well as when serving guests. In marketing this home I have become stumped as to what this area would be called! Any ideas to make it easily understood in marketing materials? A: Since its intended use sounds like a butler's pantry, I'd call it a butler's pantry. I think people understand that term, albeit a traditional term in an open concept design. Coming up with some new term may be confusing. Good luck with your sale! **Q: Help! This bedroom needs an identity!** *(in Design Dilemma)* The house is a 101 year old Craftsman. The bedroom has a bank of windows facing the east which means fierce early morning CA sun hence we've installed black out blinds. The room is small (10 x 12), the furniture is large (and we can't replace). We have a large collection of art from all over the world that we'd like to incorporate. How do we paint and treat the windows so that this room reflects our eclectic tastes and becomes a cozy retreat? A: I like the idea of painting the furniture a deep brown. If you want to keep with the Craftsman style, the wall paint color should be an earth tone, and with a variety of artwork going in, a neutral would be best so it doesn't compete with the art, and keeps it cozy. Usually art is hung at eye level, but if you're doing it more as an installation, the salon style (hanging it collage style) is perfect for an eclectic collection. I go all the way up to the ceiling. If it's on sale today and fits your budget, go for it! And yes, with this new picture of the room, it looks like there is plenty of room on the right side. As to the rug, though, I'm a little puzzled. The sofa area is very sleek and contemporary so this rug in an adjacent area is too traditional. But, there is something YOU like about it, or you wouldn't have chosen it! Is it the floral motif? The colors? Whatever it is, take that and look for something less traditional and more transitional. I like the coral trellis rug on your other post - the color is bold, the crosshatches pick up on the design in the buffet doors, and it's more transitional - a traditional motif done in a modern way. I also like the dot rug on the other post. You may want to try www.homedecorators.com. You can narrow your search by style, color, price, etc. I always have luck there. **Q: My kitchen cabinets are cream se I gloss and I would like to do all trim in the house bright white** *(in Design Dilemma)* Can I do this or do I switch to white in other rooms and use matching cream in kitchen? A: I think it's a matter of personal choice. Personally, I like all the trim in a home to be the same, and like you my preference is a bright white. It also depends if the kitchen is open/visible to other areas of the home? It may look too choppy to have white everywhere else and then cream on the kitchen trim. Think of it this way: if the cabinets were a creamy-colored wood, say a birch or a light maple, would there be any question of using white trim? So don't let the painted finish of the cabinets stop you if you want white trim all over your house. The worst that happens is you hate it and paint it again. Great question, and good luck! **Q: Need advice for family room** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have recently moved into a new home and am having difficulty deciding on a furniture layout and decor for the living room. This isn't our primary family area however I would like the room to have good flow and be functional. One issue I am having is that the front entry is directly into this room. I would like to create the appearance of an entry area. The room dimensions are 21x14. Any suggestions for design would be so appreciated! A: In general it should face the focal point of the room. If you want the fireplace to be the focal point (and it's a great focal point) and If the couch can fit the width of the room (it's hard to tell from the photos) and still have a good traffic path, then yes! Also, if you use the idea of a console table to help define the entry, then that's perfect; the couch will sit directly in front of the console. **Q: Front Entry decorating/staging help needed!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Any ideas you can give for decorating this entry would be appreciated. The view of the stairs is straight ahead when you walk in the front door. To the left is the door to the garage (so it is the main AND garage entry in one), and on either side are closets. I'm not fond of the tile floor, but it's going to stay. The built-in shelves under the stairs are very narrow (just 5 to 6 inches deep so not really deep enough for books even), so I am stumped. If you suggest putting some type of 'collection' on the shelves, please give me some specific ideas (I'm not a 'collector'!). Thanks very much! A: What a great feature! I love what you've done with the mirrors! I would paint each of the lower shelves a different, but coordinating, color (just the back wall part, if you know what I mean; leave the shelves white). Maybe pick 3 colors from the rug in the entry, or 3 deeper shades of the wall color. Or, look around your home and see how the other rooms are decorated and see if a color story emerges, then use those colors in the entry to give visitors a taste of what's to come. Because the shelves are really narrow, maybe skip the accessories and use wall decals (I love Dali Decals) to greet visitors (and you!) with an inspirational quote or words like "Live Laugh Love" or "Pause Relax Breathe" - one in each compartment. Also, I would lose the branch (I see the effect you were going for but for me it competes with the mirrors) and if you want to use the top shelf as a landing zone for keys, mail, etc. (are those wipes?), maybe find low, narrow baskets to contain it all.
