I have a rectangle mirror which is 24 inches wide and 36 inches high. My hope was to put two sconces on each side of the mirror but now I’m wondering if the scale will be off? Did I get too wide of a mirror? There will be 9 inches on each side for each sconce A: They are 24” x 36” including the small black frame. Our sconces are 4.75” wide. Your sconces will probably be a little bit closer to your mirror but I think the look you will have would be similar to 1/2 of ours. **Q: Help, my new Health food store needs updates!** *(in Home Decorating)* I know this is not a home project but maybe someone could offer me some advice. My husband and I just bought a small health food store which was was last updated 17 years ago. I know the walls need to be lighter, but I need help with some new furniture pieces (especially behind the register) and updated decor items for the walls. Thanks in advance! A: Some options could include: 1\) Changing the material on the front of the counter to something less 90's looking. You could also paint it a different color for less money. 2\) The ceiling could be painted flat black. With lighter colors on the walls the eye would be drawn more to the display areas and the ceiling would fade into the background. 3\) Use artwork and decoration to create a unified theme. Right now it seems more like a hodge-podge. 4\) Try to keep all shelving and display areas the same or very similar materials. That way the customer doesn't see the shelf, just what's displayed there. Make smaller less expensive changes first and see what you think before going further. **Q: Exterior Design for mixing siding styles, please help** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello, I am new and took down original thread, as it was under several different areas. I apologize for confusion so I am starting over. I would love input for exterior design. I am attaching houseplan. I know front gables are different pitches, nothing can be done at this point, trusses ordered and for some reason, that was as close as they could get. So my question is, with what I am working with, what is the most aesthetically pleasing way to mix board and batten and horizontal 8 inch wide plank. Windows are 2 over 2 grid all over, not what is pictured, front doors are 8 feet We are thinking not to do awning and add barn lights on sides of garage triple windows. One idea for siding is horizontal lap under trim piece on gables and 8 inch lap everywhere else or horizontal lap under seams on gable and board and batten above and board and batten across porch and front of house Sides of house 8 inch lap The gable we are considering is a simple large straight beam under gable, open on wide, 10 inch posts I have attached 2 inspirational photos for it, 1 for the garage gable and the house plan. Thank you for any help!! A: I think the idea of horizontal lap siding below the gables and B & B on the gables works well. I just did a mock-up for a client who was going to do the same thing. If you did that I would also widen the band board separating the walls from the gables. Also, I would not do the shutters on the one window they're show on. It is a double window and the shutters would not cover the window and are therefore inappropriate. Choose a paint color for the exterior of my home.** *(in Paint)* Please help me pick a color...... I know "ouch" it hurts your eyes. The home was built in 1995 and is contemporary on the interior. Set in Vermont on a heavily wooded piece of land. Large open front yard with a centerpiece maple. The exterior is wood siding. Roof is bronze (dark brown). Unfortunately, we can not afford to change out the windows so they will remain white. The windows can not be painted. The front stairs will be replaced and stained to match the back deck (no clue what color). For the foundation, we will most likely go with a faux stone. Landscaping is a minimal option as there is a stone wall to one side (right) and the left has a planting area, however, that is where the snow falls from the roof and piles up throughout the winter. I appreciate all advise and input. A: A warm gray (taupe) tone would work. I would also think about a different door color that coordinates better with the siding and roof.
