> Joanna helped in the selection of materials after a fire in my second home. I was in the state for a short amount of time and her product knowledge was invaluable while working within the constraints of an insurance budget. It turned out better than I could have imagined.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Help with difficult custom closet design** *(in Remodeling)*

I have a room above garage that we would like to make into a large closet and storage space. The space is difficult with slanted ceilings, windows etc. We had a designer from Closet Operating Systems come out and was very nice but she couldn't handle the difficult design and provided not a lot of storage space for approx. $9K. Looking for a custom built in look that is efficient and looks like it was designed and not just cabinets put up on walls. Not sure where else to go for referral.

A: You could try a finish carpenter. We work with them to build in storage all the time. Sometimes in budget constraints, we use a combination of "off the shelf" products from places like the Container store and Ikea and our carpenter to create a space that fits a person's specific needs. Not knowing what your storage needs are it is a little difficult to advise, but here is a little of what I am talking about.....

**Q: Is this marble damaged?** *(in Polls)*

Is this marble damaged or is it just the stone? Would you install it in your home? It’s honed Carrara
Venatino.

A: It looks right to me, too. Because it is honed, it lacks the shine that we normally see in marble. Honed means that the surface of the stone has been ground to a smooth surface. It is basically an unpolished surface, leaving it more porous, and less reflective than we normally expect in stones such as marble and granite. The matte finish is typically lighter than the polished finish and the care is slightly different as well. This should have been explained to you before you purchased your vanity. The stone is actually quite lovely in it's natural state.

**Q: kitchen reno layout - HELP!!** *(in Remodeling)*

We are renovating our kitchen but my husband and I are in disagreement on the best layout - island versus table, and how to keep it open looking and not filled with wall to wall cabinets. There are 5 in our family, we do also have a formal dining room, but do like to have quick meals in the kitchen.

Our kitchen is 12.3x16.3. We are planning to open up the wall into the living room - its a load bearing wall so we do have to have a post in the middle and a short wall near the end of the kitchen. We have a patio door going into our sunroom - but are not opposed to making the door smaller. We've also considered opening up the non load bearing wall by the stairs so that we can see our dining room (either a cut out or opening the wall - there are 2 stairs up from the back door and landing area so we'd have to leave at least 5 or 6 feet from that end of the wall). We've bought new appliances - 36" fridge, 30" stove and 24" dishwasher.

This is our current design...

Some designs....

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Joss

A: Depending on your budget... famous last words. Get some engineering and see if you can tuck a beam, either steel or laminated wood to ditch the post. You may have the flexibility to design what you want and works best. And I agree, while some cabinet sales people are very good at design, and we rely on them to make sure what we design works many times, they are not designers.

**Q: Do these light fixtures go?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Advice on dining light fixtures...

We are trying to accomplish a somewhat modern farmhouse theme. I like my light fixtures over my island but am unsure of the dining fixtures. I’ve thought about painting them black actually but maybe Im way off track with the actual style of them in the first place. Any suggestions on dining lights that would coordinate better with my current island pendants?

A: I agree about the too many pairs of light fixtures. There are tons of options for your dining table. You can do something similar in style to your pendants or two fixtures to create the look of one dramatic centerpiece.

**Q: Kitchen Help! Not sure how to brighten it up?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi! I’m struggling with our kitchen. Last time I posted photos, everyone said to just change out the countertops. I’m wondering if anyone can Photoshop white countertops into our kitchen. Or maybe they can Photoshop the kitchen cabinets being white with white countertops. I just feel like the world is very overwhelming. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. thank you so much!

A: A professional consultation on site can do wonders! It's hard to tell from photos and as you can see, everyone has an option! That being said, if cost is a factor and you do not want to replace cabinets, new counters, with a full height backsplash can change the look dramatically. Going lighter on paint, obviously. Some Sherwin Williams locations have designers that do complimentary color consultations if you need help. Take your cabinet door with you when picking materials and paint.
