> Jake has been our designer for two extensive remodels on our 1950's ranch style house. We wanted an open concept plan, walk in shower, and an upstairs laundry room. Our tiny original kitchen became a beautiful, updated family living space. This is our forever house and it is exactly what we wanted. Recently Jake designed our basement remodel. Again Jake listened to our ideas and incorporated them into two bedrooms, a bathroom, and downstairs family room. Perfect for visiting guests and grandkids.

**Comment from Jake Spurgeon, CKBD, UDCP, CAPS:**

> Thank You Susan for your kind words! It has been a pleasure to work with Don and yourself.

  - Description: After living in their University City home for 8 years, this couple was ready for a kitchen remodel. They wanted to trade in the dining table and chairs for a kitchen island, new flooring, cabinets and appliances, and find a way to bring more light into the space. Noting the clean, modern lines of their 1953 ranch home, the Mosby designer created a sleek, modern kitchen that better matches the home’s mid-century aesthetic. Flat-front maple cabinets in a satin white finish seemingly float over wh…

  - Location: Creve Coeur, MO

  - Description: A 1960 split-level flat-roof mid-century modern home in Creve Coeur was creating a bit of cramp for the growing family of 4 (soon to be 5). They needed more usable space as well as an updated kitchen. Mosby designer Jake Spurgeon advocated knocking down the two walls that separated the kitchen from the dining and family rooms, thus creating a huge open space that better suits their lifestyle. One of the walls being load-bearing required the installation of a massive steel beam. Once the Mosby pr…

  - Description: This accessible master bathroom is the winner of a 2017 Chrysalis Award for Residential Universal Design. A Kirkwood, MO couple needed to remodel their condo master bathroom to be easily accessible for the husband in his power chair. The original bathroom had become an obstacle course and they needed a streamlined, efficient space. The new design moves all plumbing fixtures to one wall, which creates a large, open space to maneuver in. A wall-mounted sink works nicely whether standing or sitting…

  - Description: A ranch home eat-in kitchen in Ballwin, MO was overdue for an update. They trade a peninsula for a white wood kitchen island that seats 4, and has customized storage for all their cookware and trash. Brown maple cabinets and granite countertops nestle around stainless steel appliances. New hardwood floors throughout the entire space and a fresh green paint color liven the space where the family now spends most of their time.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Help? Cheap bathroom facelift!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm helping my friend give her dated bathroom a facelift. She's thinking of painting the cabinets but what color with all that beige? Any suggestions would be appreciated. More bang for the buck is best! Thanks!

A: Try a grey-blue color! It will be a nice contrast to the wall tile.

**Q: do I use different size cabinet pulls for larger drawers?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have drawers that range in size. some very large and some quite small. Do I need to vary the size of the cabinet pulls? To me the different sizes don't seem aesthetically pleasing but I am not an proficient at any of this. Would just like some opinions on what some options are. Also, could I put knobs on smaller drawers and put the same size cabinet pull on the larger drawers?

A: Definitely use different size pulls. I always recommend this to my clients! The hardware should be proportionate to the size of the door/drawer.

**Q: Opening up two living spaces** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I purchased our split level home 2 years ago with the intent of opening up one wall that separates two living areas (it's one of those walls with 2 window cutouts). We know it's load bearing and are all good there.
My question is how do I decorate once we have this very large open area? There's a fireplace in the corner which I think will have to remain the focal point. I'm also wondering if we should remove the other wall that separates the kitchen from the front living space, which means we'll lose our built in desk and built in hutch in the dining room (please pardon the mess...we're in transitional phase from another project)

A: Furniture arrangements are the best way to separate and designate the different spaces in an open floor plan. Seating groups/arrangements.

**Q: Need color scheme tips** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I whitewashed my fireplace. Walls are a pale gray and debating on what color to paint mantle and shelf to left of fireplace (I'm thinking white? Shelf is wooden but primed right now). Also, wanting to possibly paint the orange ceramic tiles...is this even possible? Not sure what kind of paint to use....Carpet will be slate gray.

A: I would not paint mantle. The contract against the brick is nice. Would paint the cabinets to the left same color as the wall color to have them blend into the space and not have the wall seem one sided. A rich blue would be a nice accent color to space in regards to curtains/fabrics in the space. You could leave tile as is or paint same color as floor.

**Q: What should I do with this odd space in this commercial powder room?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a client (financial management firm) that is renting office space in a very old building that used to be apartments. The powder room, that clients will use, has a bathtub. My client enclosed the bathtub but now has a very odd space to deal with.
Remember it is a commercial building and the landlord has said they cannot close off the tub, only cover it up, which they did.
Houzzers, what would you do to solve this design challenge?

A: Plants, artwork, and accessory area. Could be a neat feature space for the product/service the business offers.

**Q: Tag** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Tag Added! LOL
