Greg came to our house, measured , was clear about a design cost and how long it would take to receive the design. We had two rooms in the basement I wanted to finish. An unfinished cold cellar converted to a wine cellar, and a storage room to open up and finish into a bar. I can tell you that I was very impressed with the 3D designs of both spaces and the finished product looked exactly the same with some enhancements that Greg suggested and added throughout the process. As we were also using the rest of the space throughout the reno everything was cleaned up and tidy at the end of each day even when I assured him it was okay to leave stuff out if he was returning the next day to continue to work on the project. As with most projects, I made some changes during the reno and even asked him if he could add a humidor to the wine cellar half way through the build. He was very accommodative and it worked out perfect - and all built from scratch. Something that impressed me the most and sums up the craftsmanship and professionalism of Red Ridge was trying to decide on the handle for the wine cellar door (which he made himself as well). I wanted a specific, big, chunky looking handle. Greg looked around and they were hugely expensive. He figured he could make it himself and save a lot of cost. I couldn’t believe the finished product and that he sourced the metal and wood and made such an amazing piece himself. Anyway, I could go on, but I would say if you have patience (you don’t want to rush perfection) Greg will deliver and exceed your expectations! I have already asked him to price out another job for us and there may be more. Greg Snyders INTAINIUM Home Cinemas http://www.intainium.com **Q: particle board stair treads** *(in Design Dilemma)* Other than carpeting them, is there a treatment that can be used to make particle board steps look decent (OK, snazzy!) and wear well? We are removing the very worn carpet from our basement stairs. The original steps in our 1950 house had particle board treads attached to enlarge the steps, prior to our buying the house. They are nailed on in such a fashion that removing them would destroy the underlying original step. I want to embellish the risers (which are not particle board by the way), and probably attach carpet tread on each step if I can do something about the unworthy particle board. (I'm calling it particle board - maybe it's called something else?) Thanks! A: If I remember correctly the treads are only 1/2 material which would still be strong enough. Could your handyman hubby use a cats paw claw to pul nails and screws that hold the "particle board' treads on, or rent/borrow a reciprocating saw with a good demolition blade to cut the rest that won't pull out? It wouldn't be a quick and simple job but it sounds like it should be able to be done...This would open up more options for you... I hope you and hubby find a mutually agreeable solution. One of our options is the door with a raised panel and the other is the door with a shaker panel. The cost of the raised panel will be the same as the standard door we are being offered; however, the shaker panel doors will cost us an additional $75/door and we have 35 doors in our home. All our common area door headers are 3/4" x 4 1/2" primed MDF overhanging side casing by 3/4". The casings are 5/8" x 3 1/2" primed MDF. The baseboards are 1/2" x 5 1/2" primed MDF. I love the look of the shaker door over the raised panel door, but I can't justify the cost in my mind. Also, my big concern is that with my very flat baseboards, trim and casing, the raised panel door might look out of place. Do you think we can do he raised panel door with the flat baseboards, trim and casings and still achieve a modern, contemporary feel in the home, or do you think the shaker panel is worth the upgrade. Which door should we choose. Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. A: We build custom doors and just as important as the look is the feel and the construction of the door as these often play a bigger part in the quality and its ability to transfer less sound from room to room also... Mass produced hollow core doors can LOOK ok but are made from compressed wood fibers and embossed with a fake wood grain usually. They are light and easily damaged. A solid wood door will definitely cost more but is worth it for longevity and strength. If you shop around a bit you might find a better deal still but for such an important functional part of a house, paying $2600 more for the whole lot and getting better quality is really not much for peace of mind. Shaker looks better also than raised panel in a modern style home. All the best with your project. We want one type of flooring throughout the kitchen, living room, dining room and front entrance. Laminate, hardwood, engineered hardwood, cork. There are so many options each with pros and cons. We have a baby on the way and might be getting a dog. Any advice would be appreciated. A: Sorry, ya...types of wood. Most domestic hardwood are are pretty durable. Some South American hardwoods are not crazy expensive and may even be on par with domestics. Jatoba is always nice and not overly pricey...Beautiful warm dark orangey red...
