## About

### Houzz Badges

- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

Based in Vermont, Green Mountain Timber Frames has more than 30 years of experience locating and restoring vintage timber frames and hand hewn post and beam structures, turning them into custom designed timber frame homes, additions, studios and barns.

With over 30 years of experience, Green Mountain Timber Frames offers a full array of timber framing services. We locate frames, restore them at our workshop, transport them to the building site and re-erect the frames at the point of construction. We then either serve as the main contractor and oversee the complete construction of your timber frame building, or we turn over the project to another contractor of your choice. With a careful eye for details and a dedication to fine craftsmanship, we consult with you throughout the project and report regularly on the building process. We work closely with each of our clients and update them on the progress with emails, phone calls and photos of the work.

> If you are looking for top notch craftsmanship and attention to detail, we recommend Green Mountain Timber Frames without hesitation. Dan McKeen and Luke Larson are true professionals. We couldn't have imagined anyone better for our project as it was fairly complex consisting of two antique timber frames. The construction process was extraordinarily well managed and they did a great job communicating with us and sending photos as we were not able to visit the site often. Dan and Luke are responsible, solutions-oriented individuals who are budget conscious and respectful of deadlines. As a final testament to the experience we had with Dan, Luke and the crew at Green Mountain Timber Frames, we hired them again. They recently restored a few other historic barn frames and erected one on our site as a tractor barn and the other as a garage.

> Working with Luke, Dan and their crew at Green Mountain Timber Frames was an incredibly positive experience. Besides being knowledgeable, professional and courteous, Luke and his team have an intangible that for lack of a better term I'll call "soul". They share a passion for timber frames that is infectious. It was inspirational to witness the care, respect and dedication they put into the restoration of our frame. We are completely satisfied with the project and recommend GMTF without reservation.

**★★★★★ — A.W. Perkins Co., Aug. 2016**

> Luke and his crew built a timber frame boathouse for our family in 2015. Unlike GMTF's usual body of work, this project was new construction using hemlock and oak harvested from the site. From our rough pencil sketch drawing Luke developed the frame design, gave us a cut list for the sawyer and saw the project through to the end. Luke's communication was excellent, the work was timely and the pictures tell the rest of the story. This is some incredible joinery! Thank you GMTF!

## Community Q&A

**Q: very darling, what is the square footage?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: I believe this cabin is about 700 feet. It has a very cozy upper loft in the tall section, and the owner has found the porch space a really great addition to her lifestyle.

**Q: roof design** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the advantage of having two separate roof sections rather then one section that "bends" at the change in pitch? Is it less expensive to do it as separate pieces? Thanks!

A: Dear Walleygirl,
I think the advantage of having two roof lines or in the case of the picture enclosed is a small timber frame foot print can be enlarged with "shed" roofs. The enclosed picture is a timber frame that was small, 14 feet by 17 feet. By adding the wrap around shed the first floor footprint became 24 feet by 27 feet. A huge increase of living space.
Economics is a factor in adding just shed roofs additions rather than increasing the size of the main structure to fit the foot print. One wall is already built with a shed addition when attaching to the main frame.
Early Vermont had many smaller barn frames that are lovely in themselves but sometimes not quite big enough. Adding a shed addition gives that extra room without having to find a bigger barn frame. Often the farmers would add shed roofs on all 4 sides of a barn.
I hope this helps to answer your question.
Sincerely,
Dan McKeen, president, Green Mountain Timber Frames

**Q: Love the look. Can you tell me anything about floor? Wood type?thanks** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi,

Flooring is just old pine boards that were former siding boards. Perhaps some roof boards too but often old roof boards have too many nail holes.
Applied with cut nails sanded, 3 coats of oil poly. Another floor on my web site, similar look, has squares painted into the floor. Looks very interesting and was not a big deal to accomplish. The floor is in the "Manchester house".
You can't duplicate that old floor look with new pine and stain. Look on Craig's List if you are in need of old material.
Thanks for commenting.
Dan

**Q: what kind of roof is this? Expensive???** *(in Photo Questions)*

what kind of roof is this

A: new slate from our region. maybe $800 a square, material and installation (10 foot by 100 foot area on the roof)
Check out slate quarries in the Granville, New York area. Some must have web sites.
Roof last 100+ years so in the long range it is a low cost if you plan on passing on your building to family. In our New England region we have 4 to 6 generations living in the same building. So it is cost effective. In my blog I have an Ira barn that has been in the same family for 7 generations. The current generation is trying to find new owners as they have not kept up the barn.......................Does anyone think past there generation any more?
