Persons working on my behalf found, and reported, that this company was very thorough in their estimate and assessment of the project, and the representative was "a very nice gentleman". Mr. Prine was the representative, and the person with whom I had consistent contact, I found him to be very knowledgeable, professional, and considerate of my circumstance of trying to provide my mother a safe space. I was able to get a timely contract and start-up of the project. The company has excellent craftsmen, uses quality high end materials, and maintains a timeline to completion. The contract was true to the estimate cost without new or hidden charges. Promise for high quality work and pressure to sign the contract: We were looking for a good contractor for our bathroom remodel. Don Prine with Seek Design & Renovation came and was eager to get the job. We had great concern about the quality of the work (especially the tile work) and were very hesitant to commit too quickly. He promised good quality and also promised to finish the job in two weeks. He pressured us by saying that to meet the schedule we must sign that day. He also promised that they had a designer to help us. > 2\. Bad start: During our initial meeting we made clear that the tile work and design is the biggest challenge and asked to meet the tile man as soon as possible which he agreed to do. Don started the work without informing us about his schedule and brought several of his people but no tile man. When I asked, he dismissed my request and kept saying to let him to do his job ignoring us and resulting in a big argument. > 3\. Strange communication rules: He didn’t want us to communicate with his workers at all – we could not check their work or ask any questions. Every time we talked or asked questions with his workers, they were asked to immediately inform him and then he called us angrily. He claimed that his expectation for his workers was to get it right the first time, but rather than monitor and correct mistakes, he defended their poor work. We were put in the position of getting an angry response if we pointed out something amiss, or having to put up with poor quality work. His poor communication skills made it very hard to work with him. > 4\. False Designer claim: The name of the company (Seek Design) and the claim that they have a designer was misleading. It turns out the designer is a woman in their office who is good at fashion (per Don) and claimed that he can design. Late one day he brought the tile man and we had spent a couple of unproductive hours with Don and the tile man while he attempted to push his idea for a layout without considering our wishes or suggestions from the tile man. My husband finally asked him to step aside and let me and tile man work together to finalize the accent wall tile. With the input from the designer I hired, we and the tile man got the design done in 20 minutes. > 5\. The unprofessional tile man. They didn’t let us to watch the process and we ended up with an off-center floor tile layout and unmatched grout lines (See picture). Although they finally redid the floor after we insisted, the shampoo niche is not level (off by 4 mm in 11.5 inches) and it has to be redone. Due to the limited number of pictures allowed the shampoo niche can’t be shown > 6\. The Incompetent Painter: Don promised us a quality job, but the result is anything but quality. Although his painter was a nice guy, he could not produce quality work. For each job he tried many times and could not match textures. (Due to the limited number of pictures allowed the shampoo niche can’t be shown) He painted a wall without realizing that there were bubbles in the skim coat and an untextured patch until he finished painting (See picture) > 7\. Wall damage: His painter damaged the wall in an adjacent room while he was taking down a shelf. We were not allowed to interfere with him. As a result, the wall was bowed and has several cracks in it and several nail pops. (See picture) Due to the limited number of pictures allowed the shampoo niche can’t be shown. They did not repair it. > 8\. Incompetent cabinet people: His cabinet people replaced the cabinet hinges with hidden hinges. Many of the doors would not close properly and some fell off in our hands when we tried to open them. They made three failed attempts to fix them and finally gave up, falsely claiming that the doors were warped even though the doors did not have problems previously. They left the job unfinished. (See picture). > 9\. Rude and disrespectful to customers: We knew what we wanted and had high expectations. Every time we expressed our concerns, Don did not listen and was always defensive. He argued and bragged about how many years of experience he had. Many times, when I tried to talk to him, he said, “I will talk to him (my husband), but not to you!” My husband had to remind him to lower his voice all the time. > 10\. Cutting corners in many ways: For example: (a) To avoid adding a header they wanted to set the shampoo niche off center. (b) They did not put any protection on the floor until we insisted. Even then, we had to repeat the request but never got adequate protection. (c) They did not prepare the existing floor and did not put adequate underlayment on the floor prior to tiling. Now there is an intermittent loud squeaking coming from the floor. (d) They did not prepare the wall backer board properly. Now the grout at corner and edge of the tub has started to crack after a couple of months. Due to the limited number of pictures allowed the shampoo niche can’t be shown. (e) He tried to use his painter to do the carpentry work. We had to hire a professional to finish the work since the painter did not have the required skill or tools. > > The experience with Seek Design was pure misery! **Comment from Seek Design & Renovation:** > Yes, there are 2 sides to every story, which in this case is extremely different. We had originally done a free estimate for her almost 4 years earlier on August 25, 2015 and she finally decided to call us back to do the work on July 22, 2019. We were very hesitant to do this job as she had told us that she had already “kicked off” 3 other contractors that had done work for her in the past. We reluctantly decided to move forward. Upon the start until the end of the work we did for her she was extremely difficult to work with. She continually changed her mind on what she wanted done, hired other contractors to come onto the job site and yelled at our team constantly. We handled this horrible behavior very professionally and did quality work for her. We went above and beyond for this client and tried to satisfy her on every level but unfortunately you can’t please everyone all the time. One was wildly expensive, another could never get us a price, but Seek Design and Renovation (SDR) were prompt and well within our budget. They started the job on a Monday and by Saturday the shower was finished. The glass is being cut but I am sure it will be installed promptly.The walk in shower is absolutely beautiful. At every step we were kept informed of the process and I am still amazed how fast it went. After the old tub and tiles were removed from the wall some rotten wood was discovered under the window, SDR fixed it immediately. It is so nice to have one company that can do everything in the remodel: tear out, framing bench, waterproof membrane, plumbing, electrical (we replaced a light above the shower too), and tile. After each days work they always left the work area clean and were very careful and respectful of the areas where they were working and walking through. I can not say enough about how happy we were with the whole project. Thanks! **Q: Whole home remodel.** *(in Before & After)* We did a whole home remodel starting from the top (popcorn ceiling removal), right to the bottom (we even removed the toilets). We took out everything including some walls, doors, light fixtures, wall paper, tubs, sinks, cabinets, etc.) It took us 12 weeks to complete the project. My husband and I worked at the house ever day and we hired several professionals for specific jobs (electrical, plumbing, railing fabricator, flooring installer). It was a fun project and were able to stay within budget and we kept on schedule. We are delighted with the results and are loving our newly remodeled home. We got all of our ideas for the remodel from HOUZZ. BEFORE = Stairs and railing. AFTER - we took out the half walls and installed fabricated stair railings and we replace the foyer light fixture and replace white carpet with wood flooring. BEFORE - Sunroom AFTER - Sunroom - we removed the hot tub and all the sliding doors and windows and created a sitting room. This room has the best view in the house. It was a shame that it was virtually unusable for 20 years with a huge hot tub in the middle of it. We painted the old pine ceiling with a rich dark brown. BEFORE - Living Room AFTER - Living Room - We replaced the white carpet with tile and removed the wet bar by turning it into a shower for the powder room behind it so that now we have a full bathroom for our guests. We remodeled the stair railings, fireplace and opened up the space between the sunroom and living room by removing all the interior windows and sliding doors. BEFORE - Fireplace AFTER - We updated the fireplace by replacing the old black tile and enlarging the step at the bottom. We also installed dimensional tiles in the niches. We then took out the glass doors and old logs and installed modern glass rocks with a stainless steel burning tray. A: This tile is made by MS International the pattern is Focus and the color is Graphite. It can also be purchased at some Home Depot locations. They have their own name for it though, its called Metro and the color is Gris. **Q: Need ideas on choosing an exterior paint and trim colors!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Bought a fixer-upper and I need help in choosing an exterior color for the house and trim as well as for the porch. A: You can do 3 colors that are close to each other on the paint swatches from Sherwin Williams to bring more curb appeal and interest.
