> We had the opportunity to work with Harris Architects on their "Casa Melanzana" residential project in Lake Glenville, NC. With much of our work geared towards modern and contemporary homes, it was a delight to build products designed for a more traditional aesthetic. Harris Architects proved to be very focused on both the needs and the vision of their client, and provided creative solutions specific to the project. We welcome the chance to work with them again in the future, and highly recommend their services.

## Selected projects

- [Casa Melanzana](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/casa-melanzana-pj-vj~293369)
  - Location: Lake Toxaway, NC
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Designed for family gatherings, entertaining, and everyday living, this complex integrates a guest house, main house, owner’s wing, and garage/office into the sloping, wooded site overlooking a lake. Covered breezeways and a window-lined bridge connect the main living areas and provide a link to the landscape as well as a spatial transition between areas.
- [Mountain French Provencial](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-french-provencial-pj-vj~325006)
  - Location: Brevard, NC
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: Sited on a wooded knoll offering a panoramic view, this house combines the owners’ love of French country design with an open floor plan and modern comforts. The stucco and stone exterior and richly colored slate roof reflect both the rustic mountain site and the historical precedence of the French country farmhouse. The interior is organized around the great room, with timber trusses highlighting the space.
- [Clean, Modern Design](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/clean-modern-design-pj-vj~624776)
  - Location: Brevard, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A blend of influences, this retirement house combines Arts and Crafts and Mountain Rustic elements in a clean, modern design. Straddling a ridgeline, the design called for ordering the sequence of spaces moving from the entry to the main living areas on the opposite side of the house. The stair hall provides this connection, highlighted by skylights that bring natural light to the center of the house. Built-in cabinets create a focus and structure for this central space and display space for the…

  - Location: Cashiers, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This lake home reflects the owners’ interest in the Arts and Crafts style. The floor plan was developed to provide an intimate retreat for the owners while also accommodating large family gatherings. Craftsman-inspired details include profiled rafter tails and an eyebrow dormer on the exterior, and coffered beams, paneling, and stonework on the interior. The two-story carriage house adjoining the main house features a guest suite along with a two-car garage.
- [Lake House Remodel](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lake-house-remodel-pj-vj~325106)
  - Location: Lake Toxaway, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Renovations and an addition transformed a dated, uninspired plan into a warm and comfortable mountain home. The basic form of the house was retained but modified by the addition of a new entrance, foyer, and stair hall, creating a more open, accommodating flow. The award-winning two-story addition provides a study and master bedroom suite on the main floor and media and exercise rooms below.

  - Location: Lake Toxaway, NC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This rustic home maximizes its lakeside site, linking the interior to the lake with creative layout of interior spaces and a series of terraces leading down to the water’s edge. Poplar bark siding, timber detailing, and stone create a timeless cottage design. Featuring a den, office niche, and master bedroom suite on the main level and two bedrooms, sitting room, and bunk room on the upper floor, the house is accented by trusses crafted from antique hand-hewn timbers, antique heart-pine doors an…

  - Location: Brevard, NC
  - Photos: 4
  - Description: A winding driveway, screened with mature trees and rock outcroppings, climbs to the home sited high above the road that ends at a forecourt sheltered by the house. Boldly scaled timber framing enriches the front porch and continues into the house. Arched trusses frame a long-range mountain view through a bank of windows, bringing the outside in. The semi-open plan leads through adjacent rooms to a large glass pocket door. When open, the adjacent screened porch seamlessly becomes a part of the ho…

An open, efficient floor plan is enhanced by vaulted ceilings and an abundance of natural light. Antique timber beams, log columns and trusses, native stone, and a palette of warm colors tie the house to its mountain setting, while a large covered porch and deck invite viewing of spectacular scenery.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Flooring Finish** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is this a pine floor with clear poly?

A: Thanks for your question, Jennifer. Yes, you got it!

**Q: What an amazing home!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you tell me more about that - don't know what to call it - whirly open shelf cabinet thing - please: do the various levels rotate? It's absolutely ingenious. And is that a two-drawer under-counter fridge between it and the Aga? Seriously wonderful property.

A: Thank you for the comments and the questions. It was a wonderful project to work on, our second for the same client.

The kitchen was a collaboration with a great client who thought outside the box and challenged us throughout the process, a skilled cabinetmaker who worked out all the details and executed a challenging project flawlessly, and our overall coordination and vision.

Yes, both upper and lower levels of the “lazy susan on steroids” rotate independently. The counter section, a circular section of the granite countertop, also rotates, providing lots of easily accessible space right at counter level. There is another, lower level only, lazy susan in the opposite corner of the kitchen. That is a refrigerator drawer next to the Aga. The kitchen is organized around a large island with the counter fabricated out of a single slab of sapele mahogany.

**Q: Lighting over the Aga?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi - how are you lighting the Aga? I prefer this look - open shelves vs an alcove - but our dilemma is how best to light the area, as we have a vaulted ceiling, so ceiling pucks are out, and no bulkhead either. Are those custom shelves above the Aga, by the way?

A: Thank you for adding our photo to your ideabook!
