> My husband and I are very happy to recommend Bill McWhorter to help with decorating your home. We particularly liked the way he listened carefully to what we wanted and used his creativity to deliver a result even better than what we imagined. The resulting blend of casual/sophistication was appropriate to our location in western Montana and our life style.
>
> Bill used our favorite colors in various areas to provide a decorative unity throughout the house. Our favorite change occurred when he used our small, museum quality collections of jade carving and Southwest Indian arts, at the time distributed around the house, and designed two large, mirrored cabinets to show them at their very best.
>
> Bill was easy to work with, always ready for our input, came up with fresh new ideas to stretch our imagination, and gave us a exactly the look we hoped for. In the process he became a friend of ours. What else could you want?

> The first time I met Bill McWhorter I was working for the Los Angeles Times. I met him again at Architectural Digest where I saw his interior work and was commissioned to write about him. When I saw his collection of McCoy pottery which was quirky and unusual it said something about him. Later I was living in small home 1,000 sq. feet. I had a office that needed to doubled as a guest room. Bill designed a Club Chair that unfolds into a bed that is comfortable for both a chair and a bed. The upholstery is a sturdy linen that has throughout several decades kept a smart and timeliness look. The challenge was there and Bill met it. After some years, just as my house had needed work the garden outside had been neglected. Some plants were overgrown with bare spots. He amended the soil and refreshed the plants with a variety of appropriate color and texture. I wanted low maintenance and drought tolerance without becoming a dessert look. He solved these problems in a short time with great care about my budget.

> We hired Bill to update our 20 year old landscaping and bring a fresh new look to the front of our home. We found him charming and easy to work with and he gave us lots of creative and attractive options. We were very pleased.

> We hired Bill McWhorter after seeing his lovely work at The Pasadena Showcase House. He has decorated out formal living and dining rooms, family room, and guest bath. He also designed and oversaw the construction of a screened outdoor patio, as well as a stunning Gazebo in our backyard. We found Bill to be very versitile, easy to work with and extremely creative. All of our dealings were very comfortable, streamlined, and no pressure. He was always available when we needed. After years of trying to 'save' money and do things myself, they never came out well and I ended up making costly mistakes!
> Living with Bill's designs have improved the quality of our lives.
> Polly and Jim

**Comment from McWHORTER DESIGN Inside/Outside LLC:**

> Thank you so much, Polly. It's been a pleasure and a joy working with you and Jim all these years. We've become friends, too. I've watched with great delight how your lives have changed. I like to think that, by enriching and beautifying your environment, I had something to do with thereby improving your mood, morale, daily outlook and creating an overall gentle soft look to your face. It's really true. Improving our environments, both inside and outside improves our lives. Hugs, Bill

> Two years ago, I hired Bill McWhorter for a drought-tolerant design in the front yard of my Cottage-style house. His design was inspired. He used the plants, one tree, and decomposed granite to create pretty welcoming shapes, winding pathways, and strategically placed spiky succulents and bougainvillea to add to the security of potential break-in points - an added bonus. The best part was the relaxed feeling that we continue to get as we walk through, brushing the plants - the salvia clevalandii and varieties of lavender release fragrance all year long, making it a complete experience. Also the drought-tolerant plants were surprising - the hot pink flowers from the Calandrinia, and the gigantic succulent blooms continue to amaze. I couldn't recommend Bill more highly - he's an artist with a master's eye. But be forewarned: a drought tolerant garden takes as much maintenance as a lawn, and a lot more knowledge. Hire Bill. You won't be disappointed.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Stay Brown or not** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am in the midst of updating my rooms and so I replaced a tuscan fruit bowl work of art with this new more transitional art. I was preparing the walls, ready to paint and couldn’t believe I had no more of the brown paint from years ago! Now the question is do I match it or change it.
The adjoining foyer and family room are Balanced Beige. I am looking at Chandeliers and may go with an antique gold/silver quatrefoil( not sure how you spell it). My daughters say stay Brown my friend says worldly gray. I can see both.

A: Doing something that's out of your comfort zone can be scary and I suggest taking baby steps to ease into it. You say that greens can wear on you. All greens? Or ones that you have had in the past? If your mind is not quite closed to the idea yet, try buying a length or two of a couple of green fabrics and throw one over the top of the table and view it at different times of the day and then take a look the following day and see how you feel about it. Then do the same with the next fabric. If you still feel a non-green vibe try other colors...ivory or white. Or black. Vibrant colors can also be introduced in small ways... A bowl as a centerpiece,

**Q: What are these white balusters made of and where can I purchase them** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Actually, the balusters on the staircase are original to the house.

**Q: Can you please tell me the name of that yellow flowering plant?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Dazzling! Beautiful garden.
