## Community Q&A

**Q: Help decorating wall of dining room!** *(in Home Decorating)*

We just did an addition to create a new living room which is now the big hang out room with the tv and I’m in the process of converting the old living room into a dining room. I have a table that I’ve saved from my grandmother and am in the process of selecting chairs, but I’m not sure what to do with the giant wall in the room and would love any thoughts/advice! I’ve attached a photo for reference of the room and the chairs I’m choosing from. The room is a bit of a mess with part of the old sofa and some bins in the back so pardon the appearance. Also, planning to take down the shelves, get a new rug and repaint the walls so any suggestions there would also be appreciated. Thank you!!

A: Could you share a floor plan of the room with dimensions?

**Q: bedroom door and window curtains** *(in Home Decorating)*

I would like your opinion on what would best fit this space. Curtains or Roman shades or both. The white wall with the door is to the right of the bed.

A: I would do full length curtain panels for the windows on either side of the bed -- hang the rods extended past the window so when the panels are open it doesn't cover any of the window (this will help those windows appear larger). For the small windows behind the bed, I would suggest a window film if something is needed to block sunlight. Otherwise, a Roman shade that spans the entire distance hung to the ceiling (so you don't block windows when open) and long enough to go just to the nightstands when open (serving as a second headboard of sorts). For the window near the door, I would do a Roman shade installed outside the frame so the frame will be completely covered when the shade is down. This would be a great place for a small dresser, btw. If doing a Roman shade over the bed, I would do that in a different fabric than the fabric for the other 3 windows.

**Q: House color - HELP** *(in Paint)*

Need advice!
Having a hard time deciding on house color-
one option - just paint front and trim- leave brick color
2nd - paint entire house
i like white with dark trim but cant find what will look best! if this was your house- what would you do? Thanks ao much in advance

A: I have yet to come across an instance where SW Griffin did not look great with stone. I would suggest that for the peak, then a darker color for soffit, fascia & trim to tie in with your garage door and porch columns, like Black Bean. Eventually, if possible, consider replacing the shutters with wider ones (so they fit the windows correctly). Those could also be painted the Black Bean. I, too, would like to see a pop of color on the front door. A terra cotta-type color is one of my faves: Rookwood Terra Cotta, Red Cent, or Reynard are possibilities. Good luck!

**Q: Need advice with porch decor** *(in Porches & Decks)*

Hi! I have absolutely no design capabilities in my blood! Please help! I bought 2 chairs and that’s about it. Would like to add some plants, a table maybe a lantern or 2 or whatever would make this porch look cozy and cute.
I will be posting for help with the landscaping after this is done! :) thank you!

A: Hi, Melanie! I would place a low rectangular planter between the two chairs with ferns. Maybe add a rug leading up to the door (like a 4x6 or 5x7). Not sure about the other items...maybe a couple of taller lanterns near the door.

**Q: Whites and Off-whites for Kitchen Cupboards** *(in Paint)*

Looking for suggestions on whites and off-white colors to paint kictchen cabinets. Backsplash is an off-white/cream so I'm struggling a bit with selecting a white/brighter paint color and I don't really want to do replace backsplash right now.

I was also considering one of the dark blue/ore like colors for cabinets, but worried it will make the space feel smaller. I have traditional cherry colored cabinets right now and I am ready to modernize the look of the kitchen. Just got new flooring put in with grey and earthy undertones.

I welcome suggestions and ideas! Thanks!

A: Pictures would be great! Since you already have dark cabinets, going dark won't be a big change. What is your wall color? I prefer the wall color relate to the backsplash and/or grout. I much prefer a greige cabinet to bright white. Do you have any natural stone elements in your home (fireplace, backsplash, etc.)? If so, white will not look right at all. I love the look below (including some color options similar), but it may be too much with your new floors and you may need some color like a blue or green, but I'm thinking a softer/dustier color will work better with your elements than the bold dark shades you mentioned. Your counters play a huge role as well!

**Q: Rug size under sectional** *(in Home Decorating)*

This is slight smaller than 8x10, the other size is 9.6x13, should I go for bigger one??

A: I know everyone will say bigger, but this one appears to work just fine. I would push it further under the sectional to the right, so the front feet are all on the rug.
