### Reviews

**★ — Rob Lampe, Oct. 2025**

> I hired Barnes Custom Builders to remodel 2 full bathrooms plus some other updates. Overall, a frustrating experience. At my request, the bathrooms were done one at a time, but it took them about 10 months to finish both. Many days went by without any work and when a sub finally shows up, they usually didn't finish the job or made mistakes. You're paying Barnes to manage the project for you, but they usually don't bother checking the work in detail. A lot of work had to be fixed or redone which added months of delays. You try to call them (Jim, Charlie, Chris), and they just lie about when they'll finish the job or lie about calling me back. Charlie, the owner, kept blaming the lack of progress on me for breaking the job in two and was rude. At the end of the day, the job got done, but it wasn't a positive experience, and I would look at other companies before hiring this one.

**★★ — Olga Dos Ramos, March 2021**

> Charlie and his staff were very helpful in coming up with designs for our three season room. We enjoyed the design process thoroughly and they definitely understood our vision. Unfortunately when it came time to build, all original promises of being able to work with any budget went out the window. The budget on our room was more than doubled on the final contract. We had already cut major items out of the design too, including going from 4 season to 3, which included cheaper windows and no insulation. If the project was not doable, we would have preferred to have the discussion up front, instead of being sold false hope.
>
> Glad we went through the design process, but was really disappointed after all the promises and encouragement, knowing the numbers that they just dropped a contract with a number so far off on it. I will also say the design process was slow for one room. We went to their office 3 times over 3 months and were sending e-mails to check in if there was any progress.
>
> I'm sure they would have done great work, but we couldn't trust them to move ahead after seeing them disregard our original budget after claiming it was definitely achievable. We are also still waiting for measurements on the final layout that were never provided.

> Barnes Custom Builders were a phenomenal partner in a recent project. Building multiple elements of a home at once can be extremely difficult, but Barnes' clear communication and attention to detail made our progress together seamless. When the project completed, the shared client was very happy and the home looks beautiful.
>
> The portfolio that Barnes Custom Builders have assembled is very impressive and speaks to their high quality standards and customer-focused operations. We'd love to share another project with this group!

They are professional, always available, their work quality is the best and THEY FINISHED ON TIME. They give your their entire plan before work starts so there are no surprises and they stick to it. They keep you involved in the process and informed every step of the way. Simply the best!

> BCB was honest, open , and professional at all phases of the build. We had a very interesting 1920 basement in Providence. Uneven slab, water issues, and an exceptionally difficult ceiling. BCB worked well as a team being up front about a realistic time frame. They also utilize an app to follow the progress on your own. Most importantly the BCB carpenters have great character, and I trusted them around my children.

**Comment from Barnes Custom Builders:**

> Thank you for the great review! It means a lot to know that our clients are always comfortable having us in their home. We hope you are getting to enjoy your new space!

**★★★★★ — ZEN Associates, Inc., Feb. 2019**

> We highly recommend Barnes Custom Builders to anyone in the Cape Cod area seeking a quality building or remodeling project. Our design firm (located in Philadelphia, PA) has had the opportunity to work with both Charlie & Dave (owners) continuously for quite some time to implement and sharpen the best practices in the remodeling industry. Their process is fantastic and really simplifies things for the client, plus their construction quality is absolutely incredible! If you are seeking a company that will be looking out for your best interest, give them a call.

> Barnes custom builders installed four rooms of prefinished hardwood flooring for me. I was very pleased with their work. The installer did an amazing job in laying out and installing the prefinished wood planks.
> In the course of this work I had to change the scope of the work twice.
> Dave Madieros, our foreman accommodated these changes graciously.
> They also did some shingle and wood beam replacement for me on the outside of my home. I was also very pleased with this work. The workmen were very professional and always cleaned the site at the end of each workday.
> I would highly recommend Barnes Custom Builders

**★★★★★ — karen\_tubridy, Aug. 2016**

> A front and screen door were removed and replaced with new. It was a small job, but handled efficiently and well done. Everything was well coordinated and communicated. The team was easy to work with. We would hire them again.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Rug placement in front of fireplace or couch?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I have a very asymmetrical living room. The fireplace is not centered bc the there is a door to the sunroom on one side. Which would be fine but I also cannot put a couch directly in front of the fireplace bc the entryway to my kitchen is directly in front of my fireplace. The only place to put my couch is directly in front of the door to the sunroom. Big question is... where do I put the rug?? I would normally put it in front of the couch, but the fireplace seems to be the focal point of the room.

(I can’t put the couch anywhere else. One side is all windows that i don’t want to block and the other side is the entryway to the foyer. The room is too small to have the couch not against the wall)

Don’t judge the fine details of my pictures. Were getting a new rug and redoing the cabinet doors on the built ins.

A: I would get a larger rug that will encompass the whole space and bring it all together.

**Q: Layout dilemma: Couch arm next to wall? Y/N?** *(in Home Decorating)*

What do we think about having an arm of the couch very close to the wall? We have our open living room accessible currently from either side of the sofa but my husband is sad that he can’t fit on it when he lays down. If we get the size he wants it will eliminate access from one side. Is this a layout faux pas? Photos from the interior define AR app show the sofa size my husband wants (83”) - they are not 100% to scale.
Thanks!

A: I think it's fine. I think lot's of layouts don't allow for a pass through on both sides of a sofa.

**Q: Which tile with my granite?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I don't really like subway tile, but it seems like an easy choice. Take a look at the pic and let me know which tile you like better octagons or subways? (or suggest an alternative!)

(yes - there are squares between the octagons that are very close to our paint color)

A: I prefer the subway and would probably go with a larger size, so there is less pattern. You already have a lot going on with the granite. You could also do the subway in a gray tone from the granite.

**Q: Ideas for updating a fireplace** *(in Home Decorating)*

What would you do to warm this up? New mantle? Resurface the stone?

A: A wood mantel (reclaimed?) would be pretty.

**Q: Newly installed countertops.** *(in Remodeling)*

Question for any countertop expert? I recently had these quartz countertops installed. I agreed to an eased edge. I was hoping and expecting a more square edge. I found many photos online of a more square edge and the definition being "A flat, polished edge or eased edge....The edge has a square, crisp look but it isn't sharp." Am I wrong ??? I have been told by the company that this is "industry standard".

A: Right - so the eased edge is correct. The radius corner can be different sizes. I'm not sure who was at the template or what was discussed - but that is probably their standard radius dimension as they mentioned.

**Q: Exterior Design Dilemma!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all! House is 30 years old. Was remodeled completely in 2017, just before we purchased. Is nearly perfect inside. Outside is not bad - but is bland and could use help. Thinking of replacing shrubs for some of different colors and heights. We added a small Rose of Sharon tree at the left, but have yet to do more. I am thinking of adding flower boxes below the front left windows and the right porch cut-out. I think something like shutters would pop, but not exactly shutters. I need help!! Please! The more specific the better. Thank you,

in advance!

A: I agree with the landscaping comments, pop of color etc. My first thought however would be to swap out the garage door and entry door. And maybe change the lights on the garage face. It's all a blank slate right now with great bones.
