Fine artists Pam Smilow and Gert Mathiesen exhibit their art work in galleries throughout the United States and internationally and especially like to work with interior designers and home owners to help them choose the right piece of art to decorate their space. Their love for art extends to architecture and interior design and its power and effect on people where they live and work.

Pam Smilow is available for complimentary private consultations and will travel to corporate sites or homes with art (paintings on canvas, limited edition decorative art prints, and art works on rice paper). Even large art installation pieces can be brought on site as they are unframed and rolled until final delivery. This process takes guesswork out of buying art.

Bringing art into your home décor can be a pleasurable and personal experience and you’ll immediately experience how different works of art can transform your space. In addition, Pam and Gert’s artistic palette on commissioned art is informed by the mood and color of the existing interior design and architecture.

Smilow + Mathiesen travel extensively with their work and have placed their art in private collections all over the world including New York, the San Francisco Bay Area (such as Berkeley, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Hillsborough, Los Altos . . .), Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Dallas, Miami, Maine, Washington DC, and Dallas among others. In Europe they have sold art extensively in Spain, France, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Sweden.

Corporate and hospitality collections of paintings, prints, carved linoleum bas reliefs, and large art installations include: Sports Club LA, Asami Denki Co., Ltd.., (Tokyo), Den Danske Bank (Denmark), Mt. Sinai Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital (New York), Olympus Camera, Pfizer Corporation, Queensborough Community College, Excelsior Club (NY), G.N. Resound, IBM Corporation, Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs, Josep Senillosa Architects (Barcelona), Kastrup Airport (Copenhagen), Kunstforening Carlsberg/Tuborg, Kunstforening National Banken, MODO Design, Barcelona, Reader’s Digest, Robert Martin Company, Saw Mill River Club, New York, Sekine Kensetsu Co., Shibuya Glass Co., TB Design Institute (Tokyo), Sullivan and Cromwell, Tiempo/BBDO Advertising (Madrid), United Engineering Society, and Yobo-Kenko Publishing Co. (Tokyo), Catellus (Oakland, CA).

"People might agonize over all the particular design elements that comprise a room: what to put on the floor, window treatments, what couch to buy, etc., but in the end, the art has the loudest voice in the room"

**★★★★★ — moxiemurphy, March 2013**

> We have over 18 pieces of Pam & Gert's artwork—paintings, prints and ceramics—in our home and their work has been our favorite over the years. They are very willing to bring their work to buyers and help them find artwork to inspire an environment.

**★★★★★ — monikazg, Nov. 2012**

> Over the years I bought several paintings by Pamela Smilow and they are hanging in my living room as well as in the entrance to my house outside of Barcelona. These paintings are wonderful because I never get tired of them--they seem new every time I look at them. They really complement my white and black living room. The one hanging in the entry is a good welcome every time I enter. I have a nice collection of several important European painters, but Smilow's paintings are among the most admired ones by my guests.

**★★★★★ — Suzanne Miller interiors, Nov. 2012**

> I have worked with Pam and Gert for several years and have installed their art in many of my clients homes. From traditional to modern interiors, it always seems to work! They are delightful to work with, and have a no pressure approach. I have also asked them to create custom, and personal pieces, for specific spaces and they have always come through for me and the client!

**★★★★★ — Pamela Pennington Studios, Oct. 2012**

> Pamela Smilow has a wonderful selection of original work, which she is happy to bring to the client’s house so they can experience her pieces in the space. She has a great sense of color that she uses with exuberance in her paintings. I found many pieces that could enhance a project and make a wonderful statement to compliment the interior. Pam is easy to work with and flexible, making her a wonderful resource for art.

**★★★★★ — Mara Wallace, Oct. 2012**

> Pamela and Gert create beautiful works of art in mixed media. Their works are sophisticated, but very accessible. We have an enormous piece in our family room that sets the mood and anchors the room and provides us with limitless enjoyment! What's even better is that they are such lovely people -- and that comes right through their art!

**★★★★★ — Jen Bossin, Oct. 2012**

> I hired Pam Smilow to create some mixed-media artwork for my remodel in my mountain home. Her attention to my own style while blending her artistic touches and taste was the perfect balance. I have five of her colorful, playful pieces in my home. They bring warmth where there was none.
>
> Pam is down to earth and a charm to spend time with. You will likely become very good friends with her along the way.

**★★★★★ — Sherry Scott, Oct. 2012**

> What I Wrote below for my initial recommendation is very different to what I'm going to write now. Gert Mathiesen passed away suddenly last week - A big hole now resides in our hearts.
>
> Since I heard the news this morning of the passing of Gert, I can’t get it out of my mind – the thought that he knew something most of us don’t. You see… he walked around every day being happy. ‘Just happy. This man did not waste energy on negative thoughts or emotions. It was as if each day was precious – because it was. He must have instinctively known this.
>
> So what did he do with his emotions? He made drawings and paintings. Boy, did he! Imagery and colors that insisted to be looked at…one could never ignore them. When I first met his wife Pam, I thought her art was the most colorful, vibrant and happy pieces I’d ever seen…until I saw Gert’s work. It was as if the colors he laid on the paper and canvas were saying…”Whatchu lookin’ at fool? You act like you nevah seen colors as bright as this before! Well, I’m here to tell ya these colors exist in nature and I’m putting ‘em right here before your eyeballs just because I can…and because I’m not afraid to.
>
> This was one of the good guys taken too soon. While the world and those who knew him lost the vibrant and singular works he would have surely created down the road, there is still the treasure trove of work that Gert has already made. It represents effervescence, optimism and the zest for life that this man had and now gives us back through his works.
>
> Gert, I’ll have a little brighter smile just from knowing you. Rest easy up there.
>
>
> These artists have a highly developed sense of composition and color. They are also very easy to work with and will create a custom piece for the same price point (determined by size and medium) as they sell their existing piece for. Spaces come to life with the addition of their art.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Who is the artist for the painting?** *(in Photo Questions)*

.

A: I am the artist--Pam Smilow--and the painting. My website is www.pamelasmilow.com, my email is pamsmilow@me.com and you can feel free to call me on my cell phone 917-239-3789 if you are interested in more details. Thanks so much for your inquiry and I look forward to hearing from you.

**Q: Need help with fireplace mantle** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need ideas or suggestions to help make this wall space and mantle more modern and appealing. I hate it and I'm Terrible at design ideas!!

A: Hi. One long horizontal piece of art will do the trick--give you a clean, bold look, pull the elements of the room together. (I personally would avoid a grouping of art and go for one piece--measure the length from the outside of the chairs in the photo and that will be your length, height can be the same as the existing tiny piece you currently have up there. Art has the loudest voice in the room and finding the right piece will make you change your mind about your mantel and will improve the whole feel of the room...For example, here is a piece I made for a client that is a similar space...

**Q: Creative genius required:** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a TV room that has no excitement at all; I am using old furniture that I am not sure even goes together. I would like to be able to use existing furniture if at all possible, potentially recovering it. Perhaps a coffee table / ottoman as well? Any help / advice will be hugely appreciated!

The room is approx 6m x 4.5 m

A: Hi--As an artist, I always think art (and choosing the right piece) will cause excitement in your room and pull all the elements together. Here is an example of what I might put on the tall narrow wall... I love putting contemporary art in a more traditional setting--it will provide a spark and contribute to the atmosphere of a room more than a more traditional painting...

**Q: need help on roman shade color.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have 4 windows in my living rooms. 2 of them are on the feature green wall shown in the picture. The other 2 windows are on the adjacent with the fireplace. The wall is off white( ivory). What color should I use for the roman shades on those window.?

A: This is a perfect example for me of how size of art matters and is crucial--your existing piece is too small in my opinion. If you mirror the size of the space (a little more horizontal than tall but almost a square--width being the width of the sofa or a little bit smaller...height being the same as your existing panels on the sides--you will create a nice look....I would suggest a fun contemporary piece that is less light in weight...Here are some examples of a type of piece--not necessarily in these colors...

**Q: What to do with the 1978 brick fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Sunny cozy room, but this fireplace covers an entire wall. Its chunky and odd, but the color is not the worst i have seen of 70s brick fp looks. This is the lower level family room with medium wood colored hand scraped maple floors and matching maple trim and doors. We do not want to change those features as they are only 2 years old and so much better than the hollowed out 70's brown trim previously in the room and our entire upper level and entry is white trim, doors, cabinets etc...and we want a different feel in the lower level. We do use the fireplace. So without pulling the brick out what would you do to brighten and happy up this fireplace?

A: As a prejudiced artist who always loves placing art in a room, I think you should find a beautiful, fun long horizontal piece to put on the mantel--something that matches the fun of your yellow sofas and adds lightness to the room. I think if you find the right piece, you will not need to paint the brick wall ( I like it) but I would paint the dark brown shelf (it is adding heaviness to the room)...Here is an example of the type of piece I might put there...not in these colors but you will get the idea. Art has an uncanny ability of pulling a room design together if you find the right piece and it definitely has the loudest voice in the room...

**Q: Cool fireplace** *(in Photo Questions)*

Very similar to what I would like to do. Wondering where you got the tiles. Thanks.

A: It took a while but I did finally contact my client (I did the painting on the mantel) and got some information for you on the tiles. They are old and the firm no longer exists (see below) but revivaltileworks.com is making some tiles that are similar.

Here is the Info on the old tiles: Claycraft Potteries
Los Angeles, California

Claycraft Potteries was established in 192l at 3101 San Fernando Road in Los Angeles. F. Dohrmann, Jr. was named president; Fred H. Robertson was hired as general superintendent. George B. Robertson, Fred's son, joined the firm as a designer in 1925.

Claycraft's decorative tiles, among the more collectible on the market today, provide some of the most definitive and idyllic imagery of the period. Tiles with medieval castles, knights on horseback, or heraldic paraphernalia, were designed to conjure up a sense of strength and security. The design, color and technical quality make these tiles prime examples of early twentieth century ceramic production in California.

The body of work achieved at Claycraft can be largely credited to the skill and attention of the two Robertsons, Fred and George, whose family had been successfully involved in ceramics for many generations. In 1934 the two departed to form Robertson Pottery. The last mention of Claycraft Potteries is found in city directories of 1939.

The company produced in excess of 500 different design tiles and published six catalogs of its products during the 1920s. A compilation of the six is offered by Tile Heritage as is a catalog of fireplace mantel illustrations published in the mid-1930s containing a number of tile designs not found elsewhere. (See THF U.S. Catalog Collection).

Hope this information is useful.
