Danna Cain: Registered Landscape Architect (ASLA) and Garden Designer.

Conrad Cain: Project Manager and Residential Licensed Contractor.

Our Philosophy
We develop landscapes to be fully "experienced," not just viewed from afar. Every project begins with a comprehensive design phase to create a personalized, beautiful, functional, and ecologically sustainable outdoor living area. We insist on meticulous bed prep and raised beds to ensure optimal growing conditions.

Site Engineering: Grading for drainage, creative drainage solutions, erosion control, and terracing.

Hardscaping & Outdoor Living: Patios, driveways, decks, swimming pools, porches, pavilions, and integrated room additions. We focus on hardscapes that blend naturally into the environment rather than dominating it.

Ecological & Specialty Landscape Focus
We are highly specialized in sustainable and purpose-driven garden designs, including:

Native plant landscapes and pollinator gardens

Wildlife habitats, bird sanctuaries, and beneficial insect integration

Xeriscaping, drought-tolerant landscaping, and water conservation (including rain gardens)

Healing gardens, discovery play gardens, and natural play scapes

> Danna designed my unusable tiny back yard into a space that has multi-level outdoor living and relaxing areas. She picked plants and shrubs that attract birds, bees and butterflies, which has transformed the yard from a pile of weeds to a peaceful place full of texture, fragrances and color throughout the year.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Sorry you've lost a few trees recently. I'm looking forward to working with you again to modify the planting plan to the change in light. The good news is that with more sunlight there will be more opportunities for flowers and even more pollinators. See you soon! Thanks for writing the review during the busy holiday season.

> Danna’s overall landscape architectural plan guided every trade on our property — retaining wall, dry creek bed, pool placement, water management, sport court orientation. Her sharp eye caught a footing elevation error before it became a sightline disaster. Meticulous, expert, and invaluable. Highly, highly recommend Dana for any project.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It's not often that I have the opportunity to work on such a large multi-acre site. You certainly needed all that space to incorporate everything that you desired in a manner that wouldn't feel crowded. Thanks for entrusting this project to me. I look forward to seeing the next phases come together. I appreciate you taking the time to post this review.

**★★★★★ — Jen, May 2026**

> What can I say? If you are looking for a true professional with decades of experience in design and planting, then you have the right person in Danna Cain! Her enthusiasm for our project was truly refreshing and it is genuinely evident that she loves her job. From start to finish, there was careful planning and thoughtful ideas in each step of the process. Danna is a great communicator and provided us with many different options. She listened to our goals and incorporated our hopes while also guiding us in terms of the reality of what we could expect. She is extremely knowledgeable in what will thrive in our zone/climate and worked to make sure that we understand how to care for everything. Danna's final plan and installation was able to mitigate some drainage issues while adding beauty at the same time. In the end, our installation met all of our goals - encourage pollinators and birds, fix an existing drainage issue, and provide us with a space that has beautiful color and fantastic smells all throughout the year. We could not be more satisfied with the final product and we look forward to many years of spending time in our spectacular outdoor space thanks to Home and Garden Design!

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I must admit your site was a challenge given the diversity of sun/shade exposure, the mature trees, steep hills and drainage problems! Your desire for multiple garden rooms with different themes, various vantage points of interest and fragrance scattered throughout made it easy to integrate a vast number of plant species especially those for birds and pollinators. Thank you for this opportunity to create something special for you!

> Danna did a great job with our front yard landscape design. Given the small size of the project we opted for a "Garden Walk" design service and was not at all disappointed. Danna is very knowledgeable on various plant designs from color, contrast, texture and placement. Also, hardscape features that can add "pop" to the design as well as deal with trouble spots (in our case an abrupt slope down to the street). Most importantly, she applies a practical knack for what grows best in the soil/light conditions available as our final design included many plants and shrubs that require little care. For those looking for a more intense gardening experience I am sure she can offer suggestions on more unique and temperamental plantings. Finally, Danna loves helping our pollinator friends and incorporates that into her designs. We now have a morning shift of hummingbirds through our front window, followed by the bees and butterflies.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Thanks for sending photos. You did a beautiful job on the installation! Glad you're enjoying all the color, texture, pollinators and butterflies. I remember one of your goals was to see hummingbirds from the front window. I love that you now have a "shift" of hummers to enjoy! Thanks for the lovely review. See you in the winter when we work on the back yard.

> We have been so pleased with our landscape plans, and we’ve also enjoyed working with Danna. She is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She has both beautiful design instincts and a sense for the practical challenges to installment. We were a little outside of her usual region, and Danna would call our local landscape companies and county extension office to ensure that her plans would work for our area. We would recommend her to anyone, and would hire her again if we move homes.

> I have been searching for years for a talented & professional landscape architect to design our backyard & finally & thankfully found Danna Cain about a year ago. She has been great to work with & does beautiful work. She is professional, kind, reliable, talented & a perfectionist (which I appreciate!). Our yard is absolutely gorgeous now! We have something blooming year round & a perfect balance of color & size throughout the entire yard. Many of the plants attract bees, butterflies & birds which I love! We are incredibly grateful to have found & gotten to work with Danna Cain!

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Pylant, June 2024**

> Danna designed a well balanced mostly native palette of perennials, bushes, and trees for our front yard that passed our HOA with flying colors. We were able to eliminate over half of our monoculture turf grass for a pollinator paradise. Every day I see the hummingbirds and butterflies, it makes me so happy with my decision to hire Danna and her expert team. She really knows her stuff, and it shows.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I was up for the challenge to create this in your front yard as the first one of it's type in your traditional suburban subdivision. Often native plants are considered weedy looking but I know it's the arrangement of the plants that makes it look well designed instead. After much thought, I knew I had created something that your HOA would agree to and I was so happy that you got approval so quickly. Looking forward to seeing everything grow into the paradise that you so desire!

**★★★★★ — Kirsten, Sept. 2023**

> Danna did an excellent job working with us on our design for our front and backyard. We are planning to do most of the install ourselves, and Danna incorporated a lot of our wish list plants in the design and gave us several options on plant species for areas we are not sure about what to do. This fall and winter we are going to work on the front porch area, the chicken coop, and some of the slate nugget implementation to help with our pathways and drainage. I'm really excited about the pink muhly in the front and all of the lovely groundcover that will one day be low maintenance for us.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It's going to be beautiful and solve a lot of problems! Can't wait to see in person what I've visualized for you. I'll stop by to take photos later so keep me posted on when the front is done. Thanks for taking the time to post this review. I really appreciate it. I enjoyed working with you!

**★★★★★ — agotthardt, Aug. 2023**

> It's rare to find both depth of experience and quality of execution in the same place, but Danna provides both. It has been a pleasure to work with someone who knows her stuff and is really passionate about plants and design. I could not be more happy with my new landscape design, and as a garden enthusiast, it is wonderful to have Danna as a resource for the future. Highly recommend.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It's been fun working with you to develop the design for all of your "Garden Rooms" where you can play with a diverse assortment of plants. I think it's the first time I've had a request for such varied themes over a site with mixed terrain. From your challenging very steep rear hillside to your flat space in the front yard, we found an appropriate space for each theme: Savannah courtyard, Italian, Edible and Pollinator gardens to name a few. Looking forward to consulting with you further! Thanks for the great review.

**★★★★★ — ashderrick, July 2023**

> I lost a massive red oak last year and my entire front and side yard changed from shady to complete sun. I wrote to Danna with Home and Garden Design and described my intent to have loads of plants that pollinators and birds would love - and let her know I wanted something David Attenborough would be proud of. Danna's design and choice of native plants for this very large project are incredible. She spent so much time working with me on what I wanted and I could not be happier. The colors, types of trees and plants she chose, and timing of when things bloom - are all perfect.
>
> During installation, Danna was here almost every day making sure everything was running smoothly. She was here for hours each day and oversaw everything. I did not have to worry about anything that was happening because I knew she would take care of it. Not only did her installers plant hundreds of plants, but they moved a ton of dirt around, took up a lawn with no pesticides, added dirt, and did a complete irrigation system. It was an intense project.
>
> I cannot wait to see how things grow and progress in the years to come. I completely recommend Danna and Home and Garden Design.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> You had me at first mention of David Attenborough! I thought, "Wow, this client really wants what I love to design!". From the clover lawn to the plants for pollinators and the rain garden, your project was a pleasure to design and build. You were also a joy to work with!!! Thanks so much for this opportunity to create this special place for you. I, too, look forward to watching it grow.

**★★★★★ — Anthony Ricciardi, July 2022**

> Danna Cain with Home & Garden Design is very knowledgeable, creative, detail oriented and caring. She wanted to ensure our project was exactly what we wanted and steered us in to make sure we stayed within our budget. The landscape design, choice of flowers, shrubs and hardscape exceeded our expectations. Danna also went above and beyond in dealing with the City of Atlanta for us to ensure that we did not have an issue with permeable ratio allowance. She was instrumental in helping us find a reparable company for installation. We would highly recommend Home & Garden Design - Dann Cain.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Thanks for your kind words, Anthony. I really enjoyed working with you all! It's always challenging to find a solution that suits the clients desires, solves all problems and also works with the city's many rules. I'm pleased to know that you are so happy with the results.

**★★★★★ — John Poelker, July 2022**

> Danna was the answer to my prayers. I have a large terraced area in the back of the house off the patio with lots of deer. She provided me with a comprehensive plan for the area which will be colorful, deer resistant (), and which I will be able to install with a little help from my grandsons. She also provided a list of recommended sources for all the plants and the timing for the plantings. 5 stars for Danna

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Thanks for the opportunity to help you with that, John. Now that the deer won't be eating everything, I hope you really enjoy viewing the colorful garden off of the back patio. I've incorporated things that will be blooming in every season. Can't wait for you to see and smell the edgeworthia in late winter! I really appreciate that you took the time to write such a lovely review.

**★★★★★ — Stephanie Nelson, July 2022**

> Danna's expertise is invaluable, and she is a joy to work with. We approached Home & Garden Design, Atlanta with challenging drainage and elevation issues, and in desperate need of inspiration for what was then a dull backyard. We had no idea where to start. After hearing our concerns and hopes, Danna's creative vision for the space was more beautiful and functional than we could've imagined. As we are young homeowners, she helped us plan where to focus our resources and shared her knowledge so we could do much of the work ourselves. Danna is thorough, warm, and strategic. Thanks to her, we'll soon have the dreamiest yard in the neighborhood.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I couldn't have asked for a better review! Thanks so much for posting that. It was a delight working with you too and I'm so happy to have created a special place for your family. Your steep hillside became a drought tolerant butterfly garden! The flat space off of your deck is now your edible garden & patio with firepit. Plus we solved numerous drainage issues in interesting ways. Can't wait to see photos!

**★★★★★ — HU-695169047, Dec. 2021**

> Danna created a beautiful, easy to follow plan for the garden renovation of the historic estate that I was managing the construction for. She was on schedule and very professional.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It was a rare opportunity in Atlanta to work on a historic home. I did that often when I worked and practiced in New Orleans long ago! Thanks for this opportunity to recreate the formal rear yard gardens and to re-imagine the bedroom gardens as informal, 4 season gardens of color and interest.

**★★★★★ — deerocks, Nov. 2021**

> Had a wonderful experience working with Danna on our front and back yard landscape designs. We have a number of drainage issues which has caused erosion on the sides and back of our home. Danna really listened and designed a solution that would be both functional and beautiful. We have not implemented the design yet as we are in the middle of replacing our siding. However we hope to complete the landscape in the spring at which point I hope to add some pictures. Truly recommend Danna as she knows her stuff!

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Thanks for the nice review! You were a pleasure to work with also and I'm so happy that you are pleased with the solutions. I will be passing by often to watch the progress.

**★★★★★ — ginny\_s, June 2021**

> I thoroughly enjoyed working with Danna on the development of a landscape plan for our backyard. She gathered an extensive amount of information on what I as the homeowner was interested in with respect to everything from color and plant type, to design style, to how much time I was interested in spending in the gardens tending them. The plan she developed was beautiful and exactly what we were hoping for. Danna was prompt, easy to communicate with, incredibly knowledgeable, and very professional in both her demeanor and the quality of her drawn plans. I highly recommend Danna Cain and Home & Garden Design!

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I thoroughly enjoyed working with you also! I'm excited that you were so happy with the plants I suggested especially since you weren't happy with your previous designer. Thanks for talking extensively with me so that I could get inside your head to determine your preferred style. Hope you let me know when this is built. I'd love to visit and see you again.

**★★★★★ — Carolyn Bruce, May 2021**

> Danna and Conrad were easy to work with. She worked through several designs until we reached one that fit our budget, but would allow for future development. We were changing our entire yard, a large area, with slopes and drainage issues, so it was a challenge.
> They were able to modify the slopes, run drain fields, and install retaining walls. In addition, the project involved removing existing trees and bushes and installing a new driveway. Danna kept us informed every step of the way, and when minor changes were needed, we were consulted and advised.
> I would highly recommend them for your landscaping projects.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> So happy to have found a solution that worked for you! Your landscape looks SO much better and I'm sure you will enjoy all the flowering trees, shrubs and perennials as the seasons pass. Thanks for the review.

**★★★★★ — HU-867134251, April 2021**

> Danna did an absolutely fantastic job designing the landscaping for our new home. There were several challenges including large parts of the yard that were shaded and challenges managing stormwater. Danna not only overcame these issues but also incorporated so many things from our nice-to-have list including low maintenance plants, a natural look, and a blend of colors and textures. Danna produced incredibly detailed and easy to follow drawings. She met with us numerous times and presented multiple plan options which we iterated until reaching a perfect plan. Danna also helped us to break the plan into multiple phases and educated us on the pros and cons of doing things earlier vs later. This way were able to implement the most important items first but have a vision for where we want to go over the years. In addition to all of this Danna helped us to manage the implementation and to hold our contractor to the highest standard.
>
> I couldn't recommend Danna strongly enough. She is highly professional and a pleasure to work with!

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Thanks for the glowing review! It was such a pleasure to work with you and to watch your dreams for this new house manifest. Furthermore, I'm excited you called again and are ready to work on phase two. Looking forward to another great experience!

**★★★★★ — Backyard Design, Dec. 2020**

> We had an excellent experience working with Danna. She was professional, organized, and timely. She designed a wonderful plan for our backyard, which included some creative problem solving in trickier areas. She answered all of our questions and again her level of professionalism was top notch. We would highly recommend Home & Garden Design!

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I love a challenge so finding adequate access and parking for your Air Stream trailer was fun! I look forward to seeing photos of the rest of the landscape as it grows especially your edible garden, play area, "rain garden" in the wet area and what was designed to soften all of the walls. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to write this review. I really appreciate it.

**★★★★★ — bzumwalt, Aug. 2020**

> Many thanks to Danna for helping us once again. This time she designed a beautiful landscape solution for a very steep hillside behind our new house. It was a difficult project involving 2,000 sf on a very steep incline of about 65 degrees. Due to the steepness of the hillside, it was an erosion problem, difficult to maneuver, and consequently hard to maintain (not to mention ugly!). After talking unsuccessfully to numerous landscape companies about possible solutions, we turned to Danna for help. She created a plan that met our needs and provided a basis to have meaningful discussions with landscapers. In short order, we were able to narrow the field and find a company that earned our business and confidence. Danna and Conrad helped us once before with a major project at our previous home that we enjoyed for many years. My wife and I highly recommend Danna and Conrad, and their company Home & Garden Design. We couldn't be happier and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I was so excited to hear from you again. Congratulations on your new home! I must say that hill in your backyard is the steepest I've been asked to landscape. I loved your idea of bringing in lots of color and texture to make it interesting year-round. The added bonus was using plants with flowers & berries that would be habitat for birds, pollinators and other wildlife. All of this will be great inspiration for your photography! The drought tolerant plant selection was fun to work with and the erosion control something easily handled with adequate detailing. Hope you enjoy this new beautiful hillside year-round! Can't wait to see more photos. Thanks for hiring us again. It's always a pleasure to see you.

**★★★★★ — Susie Prince, April 2020**

> Danna did a beautiful job designing our landscaping for our front and back yards. I needed a full design plan in a hurry that I could put into action some immediately, and some over time and she delivered that. She took into account our plant preferences, the way we use our space, the type of light and water we have, and our less-than-green-thumb abilities. With her plan, I've felt confident purchasing and planting in our yard. It already looks a million times better with what we've put in place from her plan so far and I look forward to seeing everything grow and mature.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> I look forward to seeing what you've done so far. It was fun working with an interior designer on a project scheduled for a magazine photo shoot! Keep me posted. Thanks for the lovely review.

**★★★★★ — Cindi Sokol, Dec. 2019**

> I've called on Danna several times for anything from plant consultation, to design and plans, to solving major grading and drainage problems for my house, my mother's house, and a handful of clients of mine who wanted to list their properties for sale, also clients that have bought homes.
>
> Danna is extremely knowledgeable and highly talented in garden design and as a landscape architect. I recommend her always! In addition, she knows native plants of this region and recently incorporated those thoughtful selections into a detailed drainage/hardscape/landscape plan for my mom's residence.
>
> Danna is lovely to work with, and I look forward to my next consultation with her.....

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It's always a pleasure to work with you, your family, friends and clients! Thanks for the many referrals over the years.

**★★★★★ — Jay Terrell, Nov. 2019**

> We hired Home & Garden Design to design and install a new drainage system around our house. This is the fourth project we’ve engaged with HGD. We received a plan with multiple options and a detailed cost proposal. As before, HGD remained engaged throughout the project, and we are extremely satisfied with the results. Dana and Conrad Cain have earned our repeat business.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It was wonderful to see you and work with you again! We appreciate your trust and the great review.

**★★★★★ — Tami Williams, Aug. 2019**

> I met Danna Cain at a Home and Garden Show years ago -and at that time she designed beautiful front, side and back yard gardens for me and has come by since (most recently 8/2019) to help make changes as conditions in my yard have changed - I removed some trees from my front yard, giving me more sun and the opportunity for different plants.
>
> The designs are beautiful and detailed and she explains how the plants go together. The mix of perennials, annuals and spring bulbs ensures that there is something to see all year.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> It's always fun working with you, Tami! Your garden is a bright spot along an otherwise dreary road. I especially smile when I pass by in the spring and see all your bulbs in their glory. Thanks for always calling me for updates and taking the time to write a review.

**★★★★★ — Ron Smith, Aug. 2019**

> Danna created a plan to eliminate half of our grass lawn incorporating native plant pollinator and edible gardens, stone steps and walls, and access paths. It was a complex and challenging project for which she did a beautiful design, including detailed drawings of existing and future landscapes.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> As avid "do it yourselfers" we hired Danna to draw plans for the continuation of our property. She nailed it!!! What impressed us the most was the detail she put into measuring as well as the final drawing. We will be calling her again!

> Cannot recommend Danna, her husband Conrad, and their company Home & Garden Design enough! Danna was highly responsive from our first contact. She listened to our needs, provided on-going teaching, and made the project design fit our desires and budget – not the other way around. Communication was top-notch, we were always updated on what was going to happen next and why. She delivered on everything as promised, and was clear and transparent throughout. We have worked with other landscapers and home contractors for various projects, and she has been the best by far.
>
> Danna and her husband transformed our yard. On the technical side, she solved a major run-off issue that had occurred with the installation of a new driveway. On the “happy wife” side, Danna planned and selected a combination of plantings that fit my wife’s preferences in colors and year-round blooms, and also balanced the practical necessity of plants that would fend off ravaging deer, tolerate a slope, and variable sun (lots of tree cover in some parts).
>
> Again, she more than covers the basics – responsive communication, honesty, clear contract – that is so hard to come by today. Then from there, she blows it out of the water – using her wealth of knowledge to grow our ideas into a reality that exceeds expectations.

> Thanks for your review on Houzz. We certainly enjoyed working with you too and have really appreciated the continued feedback. I have some great photos to share with you as soon as I have a chance to match before and afters. I know you're thrilled by how quick things have filled in and by the color thru the seasons. The special garden soil that we use is a major reason for such a dramatic display. Also, I know your wife's diligent care and watering made a big difference. So pleased to hear you are both happy with the design.

My husband I reached out to Danna Cain in early Spring this year to design a plan to help transform our 2.5 acre lot into a warm and inviting frame for our home. She did not disappoint. Each phase that we complete gets more and more beautiful. Thank you Danna for sharing your gifts with us!

> You and Eugene were such a pleasure to work with! I’m so happy that you picked me to frame and showcase your house and lovely lakeside property. It’s not often that I have the opportunity to design acres so this was such a wonderful opportunity to really create something special. I loved framing the first view of the house while approaching up the long driveway with lots of shade loving and colorful plants then opening up the design to the expanse of the large lawn near your house’s entrance. Continuing the play of intimate to expansive, I changed the barren and boring approach to the front door to become interesting and cozy. Glad you liked adding the large bed with lots of perennials and texture protruding into the lawn. This time I needed to use plants for that very hot and sunny location. Sure got to use a lot of different plants around your site due to all the different sun/shade and wet/dry micro climates especially as we ventured around the sides of the house, to the pool and lakeside. Please continue to send me photographs and updates! Thanks for the great recommendation!!

> We absolutely loved working with Conrad and Danna. Our project wasn't hugely extensive, but we ran into issue after issue with zoning, drainage, HOA and county permitting issues. Danna completely handled it all and worked tirelessly to make adjustments to work within our restrictions. They transformed our back yard from a mudpit to a beautiful space our whole family can enjoy year round.

**Comment from Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLA:**

> Hi, Anna and Reggie. We loved working with you too! Your understanding and flexibility made dealing with all the issues bearable (and sometimes humorous!!!). We were excited to be able to eventually get approval for you for the project and to build it! We want to thank you for taking the time to post this review. We know you've been extremely busy with work and family therefore this post means more to us than usual. We also so appreciated your recent email about how well most plants have performed thru the past several months of crazy weather conditions. We will soon check on the few plants that aren't flourishing and the one wobbly stepping stone. It was also such a thrill to get Reggie's recent comment ... "We've been so pleased with the approach you took to the planting plus the quality and expertise you added to the process. We'd love to repeat that in the front!" THANK YOU! We so look forward to working with you again, too, for the next phase of your project.

> Danna came into our big, near-barren back yard in 1978 with her sketch pad and drew up a design that has grown into our personal paradise and passion. It not only gives us great pleasure, but everyone who visits seems to want to bring others back to see the unexpected lush paths and little discoveries around every turn. Danna created a design that is so comfortable and relaxing and it has become the most popular "room" in our house.

> Thanks for all the photos and subsequent emails. A number of the things that you mentioned have really touched my heart. I hope you don’t mind that I mention some of that below. I especially love the part about Disney World!
>
> “You probably think that few people remember what you did especially after 40 years, but I can assure you that Andrea and I always remember that it was you who took a blank slate and made it into our personal paradise. “
> “ We have now lived through 40 years of hurricanes, freezes, kids and even a little neglect. But after (hurricane) Katrina we decided that it was time to restore the yard to the original glory plus some”
> “The basics of your original flowing gardens and curves remain the centerpiece, but we have turned it into a hobby and passion. We even have friends bringing people over just to see what we have in our yard.”
> “Our next-door neighbors have to lift their grandchildren to see over the fence into our yard when they come visit. They think it's Disney World.”

Together they are an extremely hard-working, wonderful couple who are so organized, so friendly, detail-oriented......I can go on and on! Danna made sure that I was always updated on the schedule so there were no surprises. She also gave me a detailed watering and care packet on all the plants that has been a huge help.

The summer can be so brutal on that hot hillside and this selection of plants has held up really well during the establishment period. > I hired Danna to create a cohesive plan for our front and side yards - including incorporating a walkway from the driveway to the front porch - and subsequently hired her company to implement it. She and her husband did a great job! The design, per my request, was not overly "fussy" and required minimal upkeep, as I am not a gardener. It also took into consideration when various blooming cycles would hit, so that there is almost always something flowering and of interest to the eye. They approached the job with a great attention to detail, never taking shortcuts and always keeping me in the loop. I did feel the overall charge was on the high side, having received an est. from a different vendor for a much more elaborate plan for less. Also, though we first talked in March, the goal of having the project completed before my daughters graduated high school two months later was not accomplished. Though the unforeseen obstacles were not under Danna's control, I did feel that she could have begun the process of lining up the third party vendor for the walkway earlier, before time became too short. However, I am thrilled with the result and feel her design skills and knowledge fulfilled all my expectations. I would definitely recommend her.

> Thanks for posting such a heartfelt response on Houzz. This site as well as other social media platforms give clients a way to express both the negative and positive aspects of working on a construction project. We’re pleased to know that you are happy with your completed sidewalk and garden. It certainly has improved your curb appeal! We worked hard to provide you with the softer, more welcoming Southern style entrance that you desired. Thanks for expressing that you enjoyed working with us and would choose us again. We look forward to working with you again in the future.
>
> Since future clients will be reading this post while investigating our company, I feel it’s only fair that I clarify a few things.
>
> You expressed that you’d been looking for nearly two years for a company who could handle your project and that you were excited to have finally found someone. When you contacted us in early March, you wrote that you would “like as much of the installation as possible by mid-May”. We expressed then and many times later that this wasn’t sufficient time to complete the entire project but we would do our best to provide you with something better than what you had at the moment. We also explained that we already had several other projects under contract and that they needed to be completed first. Unfortunately, it was an extremely rainy spring including a flash flood that prevented us from working every day and thus we fell behind schedule despite working on weekends in an attempt to keep everyone happy.
>
> There were many complications and change-of-direction regarding the paving.
> We began addressing these as soon our other obligations were met.
> There were many site visits, meetings, emails and conversations with allied professionals as we worked thru the following in the most timely manner possible.
>
> • We discovered that your existing porch patterned concrete infill could NOT be removed without extreme expense due to the unorthodox manner in which it was originally built.
>
> • As the porch couldn’t be replaced we started research on how to clean your stains, touch up color where missing and refinish it. It was very difficult to locate anyone willing to perform this service on such a small project.
>
> • We discovered that your porch was built using a tooled pattern that is obsolete. We worked to identify the tool which led to communication with the manufacturer who just happened to know someone who bought that tool 15 years ago and still is in business. Fortunately he found the obsolete tool in his warehouse so we were on the road, finally, to getting a contract signed for your work.
>
> • The new concrete was poured. Unfortunately due to a dye lot mislabeling issue from that manufacturer, the new concrete was not the right color.
>
> • We tore out all the new paving and re-poured it as soon as the color/dye problem was resolved with the manufacturer and the replacement color could be shipped.
>
> You received the highest quality colored/patterned concrete walkway and landing installed so that it will have a very long life, edge integrity and drain properly around your landscaped beds. It also received coatings to fix the color as well as make it slip resistant. We were even successful in refinishing the existing concrete on the porch so that all paving, old and new, match in pattern, style and color.
>
> Our layout/design for the paving was certainly more simple than the design you showed to me from a previous company. I did not see a written proposal from that company so I can only respond by saying that I welcome you to forward that design and proposal to me for review and further comments. I seriously doubt that the lesser price you mentioned included everything that we provided: raised beds of our premium organic soil mix / technical pruning and reclamation of mature shrubs / demolition of others / new tree and shrubs including specimen sized shrubs / layered plantings of shrubs, perennials and annuals / amazing pots and also irrigation upgrades installed for not only the front along the new sidewalk but also around left side of house and left side of driveway.
>
> By the day of the party, we had installed a new sidewalk and landing to your front door which replaced the inadequate and unsightly stepping stones that you previously had. We removed all the dead & overgrown shrubs then neatly pruned what was remaining. We then did all bed preparation necessary and planted new shrubs along the house and walk. Everything was mulched, cleaned and though not complete, it certainly all looked far nicer than what you had before. We returned after the party to finish the installation of perennials, annuals, and other plants on left side of driveway.
>
> It’s a beautiful design with lovely contrasting colors and textures for interest year round. It’s extremely drought tolerant as needed for this south facing landscape. Shrubs were designed to grow together as masses so that there will be minimal pruning and eventually no weeding needed. The shrubs are as low maintenance as a landscape can be especially since only varieties that are extremely insect and disease resistant were used. The perennials that were requested to give you the old-fashioned Southern look do require some maintenance, however, varieties were also chosen to be the most drought tolerant, insect & disease resistant. All of the above provides you with a thriving, lively landscape that is fragrant and lively with birds and butterflies. ENJOY !!!

> Danna has been an excellent partner in overhauling the design of our yard. She listened to our wish list and communicated her ideas and concerns clearly and quickly. Not only that, she hit the nail on the head with our design plan! We are thrilled that we get to continue working with her and can't wait to see the final results!

> I was so excited when I came upon Home & Garden Design, Inc. because it was very important to me to find a landscape company that embraces holistic principles. Danna and Conrad understand the energy and integrity of the land ... that “feng shui” element which assures you flow through the space with ease. Each little nook of the yard suddenly had a purpose. It’s like our land had doubled in size! They also understood how to take care of the land without relying on harmful chemicals, which is very important to us, especially since we have three children. I was so relieved to be able to entrust the transformation of our yard to an organic team. With their warmth, professionalism, and experience, they made every step of the design and implementation process comfortable for us. I know that Danna and Conrad were meticulous about the details of the design and quality of the work. Thank you for transforming our backyard from an ivy mess to beautiful terraces where our family has been playing in ever since.

> Danna worked with us on a incredible landscaping plan- one we still work with in adding to our garden's delight. There is no better choice than Danna. You have to try them.

> We are happy to highly recommend the professional services of Home & Garden Design Inc. Danna worked diligently with us to create the landscape that we had only envisioned. Danna is thorough and truly talented, but easy to work with; she took the time to discuss our project and she understood our desires. Danna and Conrad prepared a detailed planting plan with each plant located and identified. When work commenced, the site was carefully prepared for the specific plants—there was no rush to “smother and cover” consideration was given to each plant’s needs. Quality plants and materials were used throughout the project. During the project, Danna and Conrad were on site daily. They were always available to discuss our concerns or questions. The project was completed on time and within budget.
>
> Danna prepared an extensive “Garden Guide” to assist with ongoing maintenance. Danna has continued to visit, call and e-mail frequently following the completion of our project in May, 2012.
>
> Needless to say, when the opportunity arises, we will seek out the services of Home & Garden Design Inc

> I have been wanting to work with Danna since I met her at the Home and Garden show back in the 90's. She is great. We have been trying to get a design together for over a year. Through no fault of hers we have hit snag after snag. She has been cheerful, patient and encouraging the whole time. Danna is not only our designer, she is our collaborator. I am confident that when we finally get this project completed we will be very happy. She is a joy!

> 2012 started the process of transforming my property. As I have made many attempts and many errors, I decided the best approach was to hire a landscape architect to design and implement improvements over time.
>
> Danna came out and listened carefully to what I hoped to achieve and reviewed my budget consderations for the coming years. My first concern was addressing a water problem in my garage due to poor grading. Second on my list was a goal to remove over-grown and unattractive plants.
>
> Danna provided me with 3 stunning options for the front yard. I had favorites with each of the plans so Danna provided a final draft incorporating what I loved of each into one. She also provided me a copy to give to the architecht who will be desinging the modifications to the front door.
>
> To date, the HGD team has completed what I call the 'destructive creative' phase of my project list while addressing the grading issue. I am happy to report that within a couple of weeks of completion, we had the kind of torrential downpours that normally would have flooded the garage up to the back door. Mission accomplished. My garage is dry.
>
> My only dissappointment is that we cannot immediately begin the next phase. Must wait until other projects are completed. I know that once we get underway, all of my dreams will be realized.

> Home & Garden Design just finished revamping our tired, overgrown and yes, blah front yard and we are completely delighted with the end result. Danna guided us through a thoughtful, creative planning process so that we learned what would work best for our front yard. She listened carefully and had excellent suggestions and alternatives, when needed. H&GD's professional crew did outstanding work and cleaned up every day, so we never came home to a messy yard. The entire process was a true delight and we recommend Home & Garden Design highly for any landscaping project, small or large. We cannot wait to see what our perennial urban garden will look like next year!

> Hired Danna to provide a landscape design that we are installing over time. Wanted organic and wildlife friendly design, low maintenance, low water requirements.
> Wow, what great ideas and a beautiful design we received. We are slowly installing on our own and Danna was great providing us guidance on approach and priorities.
> Danna is a great listener, a creative landscape designer and knows so much about organic care and wildlife habitats.

> Home & Garden Design helped us create a playful oasis in our backyard when we first moved to Atlanta several years ago.
>
> Danna, Conrad and their team of hardworking professional installers took the time to really get to know our family. They created a garden plan and playspace that is still a joy to use!
>
> The space has stood the test of time and has really grown with our family.
>
> At first, the safe play area and running paths in and among the plants were the big draw in the neighborhood. But, now, as all the kids on our street have grown bigger they all like to plant their own seeds in our 3 garden plots and watch their creations grow.
>
> I would recommend Home & Garden to ANY homeowner in a heartbeat!

> Danna and Conrad Cain and their team at Home & Garden Design are the best. They really listen to what you want as well as making helpful suggestions. Their crew is tops. They did a complete backyard project for us that included landscape and hardscape such as a firepit and grass ,trees and flowers. We couldn't be more pleased.

## Community Q&A

**Q: show photos of infinity pools along a hillsi to** *(in Photo Questions)*

Photos of infinity pools along a hillside

A: 42' - it isn't an infinity pool

**Q: Run off issues?** *(in Photo Questions)*

At the back of this bed is very sharp drop from the lawn into the bed. How do you stop water running along the channel in heavy rains and washing the mulch away? I have a similar bed and every time we have heavy rains the water spills from the lawn into the bed and runs through the channel, taking mulch with it to the lawn below. Frustrating!

A: The trench between bed and lawn was intentional so that runoff would not wash away good garden soil in the planting bed. There's actually large gravel in that trench that you can't see. The mulch is a very thin application for cosmetic purposes and does sometimes wash in very heavy rain. Client did not want to see the gravel thus the thin layer of mulch. The gravel helps the mulch to "stick". The washing of mulch wasn't an issue for client because she had a weekly "gardener" on staff to replace it when needed, which wasn't often. FYI - there's also steel edging about 8" off of the grass that separates the gravel trench from bed as an extra deterrent for the runoff water.

**Q: photos of the house?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Any photos of the house? Love the green trim around the windows and would love to see more. Thanks

**Q: Water Iris Seed Pods** *(in Irises)*

I have a few water iris that went to seed, but the seed pods are still green and haven't done anything yet. Does anybody know when the seed pods will turn brown or be ready to harvest the seeds? I have heard that it is best to not let it go to seed and let the plant concentrate on spreading by rhizome, but they are in an area where I don't care how slowly they spread. So I decided to experiment by letting them go to seed.

A: The seed pods will mature in Fall and will actually open up (burst open) as they do. If left alone, they will just cast the seeds on the ground below the plant - if there is any earth below. They will then eventually grow into new plants but it takes a few years. You can harvest them when they "burst open" and plant to create new iris but the seeds should be barely pressed into wet soil. I don't let mine that are in deep water go to seed, so I can't help you with advise in that regards. Normally, I also prune off the seed pods to allow more energy to go to producing more rhizomes as that's the quicker way to get more plants and flowers which is my personal focus.

**Q: Scared little rodent in my basement** *(in Name This Animal)*

The basement door got left open and Here's who came in Bigger than a house mouse what is he? I know it's a bad photo but he's behind the freezer How to get him to leave?

A: wild bunnies don't have the same big ears as "pet" rabbit breeds . Also your critters posture looks just like a baby wild bunny

**Q: What materials are the paths made from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The paths behind are of "Mountain Pebbles". They are similar to pea gravel but not so round. Because they are more angular, they mesh together better making them a more stable walking surface. These are all products available in Atlanta and North Georgia into Tennessee. In another region, the products available will be different because of the natural resources there.
