> Jan helped me refocus on the functionality of our first floor. It has transformed the space usage and traffic pattern flow. She absolutely nailed it and all I had to do was listen to her. She knows what will work. She is great!

> Brilliant designer, talented artist, and compassionate soul!

> Jan is an incredible designer who goes above and beyond! She is not only a gifted designer, she is also someone who teaches us how to approach design – which is why she has such a large following of good people here. This is crucial as few of us renovates repeatedly during our lifetime, so this field is very foreign to most of us. It is important to be educated enough to even ask the right questions. It’s a joy to learn from her as, in addition to her great sense of humor, she speaks her mind and tell it as is and not just what one wants to hear… which can end up in disastrous results. Jan got us off the ledge many times and cares enough to keep on checking on us. So we will update with final pics as we emerge from our ignorance thanks to her. She is not just smart, gifted, but compassionate and her designs incorporate function, elegance, cost and she is a savant in solving design dilemmas. She is so generous with her talent and expertise; we only wish we knew her earlier (thanks to Kendrah, better late than never). Anyone lucky enough to work with her will have their dream house come true!

> We were extremely impressed with Jan’s ability to take our empty living room and transform it into a fully functional space that not only meets our needs, but is aesthetic as well. Jan even took the time to provide detailed sketches offering different layout options, with accompanying explanations for how each space was laid out and why it works. Jan is certainly a master of interior design and she has instilled us new homeowners with some excellent interior design principles that we will use for any future spaces. We were lucky to have Jan comment on our post and we highly recommend her services! Thanks again Jan!

> Jan has been incredibly helpful to me in the remodeling design process. Her initial design and configuration of our kitchen through a simple drawing was leaps and bounds the best design compared to what I originally showed her. She has a quick eye and takes into consideration your needs and desires and designs to that. I appreciate her ability and seasoned expertise in design to keep a space beautiful, striking and timeless all at the same time. What a delight to work with someone so caring, honest and talented!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Advice on skylights for a small room: one or two?** *(in Remodeling)*

We’re having our roof redone and would like to install skylights in some rooms in the process. This particular room does have a window but based on location, doesn’t get a whole lot of lot of light and looks drab during the day. We’ve settled on a skylight with a rough cut of 17.5” x 33.5”. It wouldn’t require rafters to be cut so extra permits arent necessary.

My question is, would one skylight in the center look awkward or is two running side by side, parallel to one another overkill?

The ceiling the skylight(s) will be installed on is 10” x 6” whereas the overall floor size of the room is 11.25” x 10”.

Hoping to get people’s opinions.

A: Zero need for a skylight in the bedroom. It's " drab" because of drab/blah decorative decisions: ) Paint, bedding, lighting by electricity etc.
The shutters alone are cutting 50% of natural light in the day hours. What do you CARE when you are sleeping? You do not.

**Q: Bathroom layout understairs** *(in Polls)*

Hey all,
My partner and I are debating what layout would be best for our understairs toilet.
Apologies for the crude drawing but this is showing 3 different sink layouts. I was convinced we were putting the sink as it shows in the second drawing and bought a 60cm round mirror to go above the sink.
My partner assumed we were having the sink opposite the toilet, like in picture 3, but my concern is the sink sticking out into the doorway.
My partner then said why not do a corner sink, but we could then not have the mirror directly above the sink and it would have to be to one side or another.
What would you do? Where would you put the mirror?
(The two little lines indicate the doorway!)

A: It shall DEPEND the sink.........
It can go directly opposite the toilet, you will see a bit of it when you open the door ( so what??)
https://www.thebathoutlet.com/cerastyle-001600-u-bathroom-sink/product/2080
We do not know your locale, but it is not USA......

Length: 19.7" Width: 9.8" Height: 4.5"
Rectangular white ceramic sink
Wall mounted or self-rimming bathroom sink
Includes a single faucet hole (left side) and overflow
Standard drain size
Made and designed by well known brand CeraStyle

Otherwise????????????
As below

**Q: Primary bath remodel - need input** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are remodeling our primary bath It is a small space with the toilet and shower located in an enclosed room and a bathtub and single sink with vanity in the main area. The first pic is of the tub that will be removed and made into a large shower. The toilet and shower are on the other side of the wall in this photo.

The toilet and shower are located together in a small room behind the door in the photo below. The shower is located on the right and the toilet is located on the left. Many of our neighbors with our same floorplan have removed the wall and the shower to create one large vanity with two sinks. This is a nice option but it leaves the toilet rather exposed. My husband and I prefer to have the toilet located behind a door for privacy.

We would like to make the existing door into a pocket door to open up the space but we can’t decide what to do with the existing shower. Should we make it into a linen closet/linen cabinet? Should we recreate it into a sink and vanity which would give us a second sink? The current vanity is 60” so we could add a second sink to the current vanity but the space is tight and we would hardly have any countertop space. Thank you for your time and we would love your suggestions

A: A bath, any bath question you may have........
Needs a good sketch ( bold neat, tidy of the whole space, . every bit of solid wall, every window, every opening, and that is entry, closet or any other. All of these need an exact dimension which should include and trim casing around them.
Anything else will get you no answers, or meaningless answers.
Add pictures, jpegs of the current condition AND the sketch as a jpeg, . Do all of that below, do not start over!
Anything less than this has a name...Mystery Meat, We are not visionaries ...: ) and all baths are feet and inches......everything, as are all spaces.

**Q: Guest Bath Remodel: Are you Team Shower Door or Team Shower Curtain?** *(in Remodeling)*

I am remodeling a 1960s neo-Colonial family home. If your only downstairs bathroom (for guests) is a full (approx. 6-8ft) bathroom with 36x48 shower, would you use a glass shower door or a shower curtain? The shower is on the right of the entry door and I can't relocate it, so it is the first thing guests see. I feel like clear shower doors are for more private spaces, but I have always lived in an older home. I would love to know what others think. Thanks!

A: Doesn't one close the bath door when showering ....naked? Who else would be in there with your guest? : ) How frequent are over night guests?
Mist folks don't love a shower curtain. If the curtain is always closed, the bath feels smaller. In the end,,,it's up to you, so we shall assume this is a tub/ shower combo? You are keeping the tub? if so...... a curtain is preferable. If not and ONLY a shower? I would do glass.

**Q: Advice needed for new build kitchen layout** *(in Building a Home)*

Looking for advice on the most efficient layout for this kitchen. The only thing that must stay as pictured is the sink and window. Will have 42 inch fridge 30 in cooktop and 30 in double wall oven. I am wondering if moving the island back a bit toward the dining area would result in a better work triangle. Open to any suggestions. Thanks for taking a look.

A: Your natural light is going to be dim, no matter the exposure. the kitchen with window at sink, will be dimmed by adjacent garage wall and even the "flex" wall.
The great room will be dimmed by covered porch......
I hate to "dim" your enthusiasm, but, it's what I see.
What do elevations look like? Location/climate?

**Q: Same flooring through home** *(in Flooring)*

Building a new home and thinking of using same colouring vinyl plank throughout except bathrooms. It is a ranch/bungalow

A: Of course! Why is this even a question? ! No, no, no to wood look porcelain tile in baths, when you do this: )
