Dane Austin is a Boston and Washington, DC based Interior Designer known for creating homes that push classic design to its bold edge. With an eye honed in fine arts and antiques, he pairs the classics with a modern point of view, and what emerges are interiors that are beautiful, comfortable, cohesive, and always a little daring.

Dane has an affinity for the special find, that one-of-a-kind piece that speaks of history, provenance, and a great story, pieces he may have found in the Paris Flea Market, unearthed in a London Antique shop, or maybe stumbled upon in his travels closer to home.

The firm is as confident designing contemporary high-rises and modern farmhouses as they are designing traditional colonials and storied historic homes. And as much as they are passionate and precise, the team is also known for their warm and friendly demeanor, and for quickly earning their clients' trust. Whether their projects are located in town, along the coast, in suburban neighborhoods, or rural environs, the team not only works in multiple areas but is also adept in multiple vernaculars.

Catching beauty everywhere, being inspired by nature and his clients, and feeling grateful for a career that is fulfilling, and a life that is too, defines Dane. What defines the firm is creating custom-tailored homes where clients feel happy, welcome, and at ease. In these surroundings, everyone thrives and lives deeply from the heart.

> I feel happiest and most relaxed when in my home, and thanks to the incredible work of the DADI team. I appreciate your responsiveness, patience and support throughout the renovation process. .
>
> Your talent, guidance, and partnership have made this experience both enjoyable and rewarding. Thank you for all your hard work over the past year. I’m more than happy to leave a 5-star review, refer your firm to others, and look forward to working with you again in the future!

**★★★★★ — Keith, Jan. 2023**

> I was lucky to meet Dane when he was first searching for a home in the Boston area. It was immediately apparent that he was talented beyond the abilities of your average interior designer. Dane saw things in properties that I could never imagine, and he has proven over and over again that he is one of the best. I will always think of Dane first when clients need a referral!

**★★★★★ — Alan Ioffredo, April 2022**

> Dane and his team members were helpful throughout our design and execute process. My wife and I purchased a pre-construction condo in East Somerville's Assembly Row. The unit was lacking character, color and texture so we sought and found Dane's guidance through a local internet search.
>
> Dane was particularly helpful in showcasing ideas and prospective layouts, co-hosting supplier visits, narrowing our options and executing over a mutually acceptable timetable. We and visitors are pleased with the outcome and commend Dane for his vision and candid execution.

**★★★★★ — Savvy Words, June 2019**

> Dane has one of the best eyes for detail I have ever encountered. He has impeccable taste, a fabulous sense of leadership, well-developed organizational skills, and excels at project management. His proven Signature Process guarantees each and every project has a positive outcome and happy clients. We whole-heartedly recommend him and his friendly team. The overall experience is easy, enjoyable, and efficient!

**Comment from DANE AUSTIN INTERIOR DESIGN Boston & Cambridge:**

> Hi, Thank you for the kind words and wonderful review. You make it all worth it!

**★★★★★ — Keith Magnus, Dec. 2017**

> I’ve known Dane for over 5 years and can honestly say that he’s the best interior designer I've met. His attention to detail, his ability to listen to his clients while pushing them to be creative, his professionalism and his true passion for design come through absolutely. Do not hesitate to call him to design your home!

**★★★★★ — Tina C., Jan. 2017**

> Dane and his team are extremely attentive, detail oriented, and responsive. He spends quality time with you to ensure that he understands your needs and your tastes. Everything that he has recommended and procured for us has been perfect for our home. We love living in our house, because of Dane. Without him, our home would still feel foreign to us. He truly is the best.

**★★★★★ — Services Plus, Dec. 2016**

> As a owner of a Painting company, I need to rely on designers to help my clients choosing color before we can start the projects. Dane and his team has helped us many times, all ways very knowledgeable and professional. Highly recommended!

**★★★★★ — Teresa Booth, Dec. 2016**

> I was looking for a designer to help with color, window treatment, and fixture selections as part of a fairly extensive home renovation project. Dane and Aga were recommended to me by my architect. They met with me and asked thoughtful questions to understand our style (which definitely was not evident based on how our home looked at the time). They made several recommendations which I would not have thought of myself, including refacing our very tired fireplace, refinishing the wood floors with a darker stain, painting the entry hallway a beautiful blue-green color, and hanging wallpaper in several rooms. They also helped with light fixtures, tile, etc. Everything is coming together really well. Hopefully once the dust settles in another year or so, we can work on some of Dane and Aga's suggestions around flooring and furniture.

**★★★★★ — Holly Christensen, Dec. 2016**

> We are still adding the "final touches" to our dining room and living area but we're enjoying the process with Dane and Aga as our designers. They both have a great eye and balance each other's personality & style in the most perfect way. Dane was quick to understand my needs and add his own spin to create a space that has a French countryside feel with a splash of the beach which is what my life revolves around. I would recommend Dane Austin Design to anyone looking for a unique, memorable space.

**★★★★★ — Sharon Reilly, Nov. 2016**

> Finally, I can let people in off the front porch!
>
> Working with Dane and his team is a fantastic experience. From the front welcome mat and custom carpeted stairs in the main entrance to the drapery rods and careful art placement throughout, every detail is considered. Dane uses a personal and friendly approach, an invaluable 15-Step process, detailed questionnaire, in-depth conversations, a dedicated team, and an inspired sense of style for a job done well done. The vendors he recommended were all professional and a pleasure to work with as well. He exceeded our expectations, and delivered a beautiful, happy, and comfortable living space!
>
> Many people think that only fancy folks use interior designers. I was skeptical at first. After meeting with Dane, I was ALL IN. We were open to both high-end retail furniture, and fabulous flea market finds. Dane was great at getting us value for our money while offering unexpected surprises that pushed us out of our comfort zone but came with delightful outcomes. That’s fancy to me. I would (and have) recommend Dane to friends and family, and to anyone who will listen. You will not be disappointed.
>
> We have lived in our Newton home for eight years. Most of that time has been relegated to raising three children aged 6,8 & 10. Not much time in that eight years was spent considering our decor. Whenever guests came to visit, I hoped they wouldn’t want to enter. Now, after having worked with Dane Austin Design, I fling open the door, newly painted in my favorite plum color - and insist they come in!

**★★★★★ — kohanloo08, Sept. 2015**

> Really did a beautiful job transforming my living room to a space that matches my personality! Dane is very patient, kind, and has such a keen eye! He taught me a lot about interior design and encouraged me to take some risks to make my home look the way I hoped it would but could never figure out how to do it myself.

**Comment from DANE AUSTIN INTERIOR DESIGN Boston & Cambridge:**

> Thank you for the kind words. It was such a pleasure working with you!

**★★★★★ — Kay Mahl Arcail, July 2015**

> Dane Austin Design was hired to update and repair our Cape Cod home which had not been done for about 25 years . Because we were in Florida for the winter, Mr. Austin took over completely. We were updated on a regular basis about work that needed to be done and the completion of each phase of design.
>
> They managed the entire project with ease. Some of the design work completed included a new furniture layout; adding a new fireplace surround; new trim and moldings; new tile work; repainting the whole house; wallpapering the entry (which I was nervous about -but it is now my favorite design feature); custom window treatments and lighting throughout.
>
> Mr. Austin's team helped us de-clutter and repurpose old furniture; reusing many of our cherished items, but purchasing new pieces as needed. They also helped source new artwork and managed the install for everything. We arrived home for the Spring season to Mr. Austin and his team who handled every last detail. They greeted us at the door with champagne and appetizers to walk us through every room, highlighting the updated spaces with fresh cut flowers, lit candles, and sweet treats in the candy dishes.
>
> Mr. Austin made us feel very comfortable leaving him in control of the project and we couldn't be happier. He is a true professional.

**Comment from DANE AUSTIN INTERIOR DESIGN Boston & Cambridge:**

> Thank you so much for the kind words. It was a pleasure working with you and your husband on this project. Seeing and hearing how much our clients love their newly design homes is our greatest pleasure!

The client, a commercial real estate professional, loved the exposed-brick walls and wood ceiling and beams but felt it was impersonal and stark. He wanted us to make it feel more like home. By integrating custom millwork and furnishings in sumptuous materials with a masculine vibe, our interior design team transformed the space into an inviting retreat with an easy and consiste…

  - Description: The owners of this Boston penthouse had lived in a traditional Victorian home for 23 years and sought a big change. They wanted their penthouse to have a modern aesthetic that possessed an ease-of-use and high functionality for everyday living. Comfort was a priority. My Boston design studio created sleek, pared-down interiors with low-slung lounge seating, floating consoles, and modern Italian pieces as a nod to the client’s heritage. I used color sparingly and chose an open-plan layout for the…

Dane and his team were originally hired to shift a few rooms around when their son left for college. He created well-functioning spaces for all, spreading color along the way. And he didn’t waste a thing. The homeowner, who has since tasked the designer with revamping the roof deck, characterizes the updates as “crisp” and “sharp.” Dane says, “I look at every element and ask, ‘Is it special, i…

  - Description: My client for this Boston loft is a rising star in the tech world. She wanted a fabulous home that worked as her personal retreat where she could recharge. She requested a loungey atmosphere that feels glamorous where she could work, play, and unwind. To counterbalance the raw feel of this 1,200 sq ft two-bedroom space, I created a design scheme that blends femininity, sophistication, and the bling of Art Deco with earthy, natural accents. Both agreed that the space's spectacular architectural details – such as its moldings, original doors, and rose ceiling medallions – were worth the investment and those features became a driving force in the design direction. ## Community Q&A

**Q: help with small living space** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi. I have a space in my house for a formal living room that I am decorating to use for our personal second living room/chill out/reading space. So I want it to feel light and airy with lots of plants. I am still to add plants and small décor pieces on the side tables. But this is the layout and furniture I have gone with. But looking at it, I feel something is not right. Not sure what - the ottoman maybe? Also, I will be removing the two framed photos and putting one wide piece of art above chair.
Looking to experts here to help make this room look cohesive and well put together

A: You might consider reorienting the pieces you have. You might try the loveseat where the chair is or taking the loveseat, floating it on the rug facing the window. You could also place the lamp in the corner and add some plants and thicker window treatments since the loveseat might not be in front of the window. Adding an accent color might help as well. If you are replacing the art with other artwork maybe try to work in an accent color there and with pillows.

**Q: Master bedroom decor** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello, I could not find my post from a couple of weeks. i am trying to decorate my master bedroom. i do not want to paint the dresser or the night stands. they are cherry color. the headboard however is darker. should I paint it in a creamy white color? or leave it as is. The quilt has a bit of yellow, gray and green. the dresser is in front of the bed . There is another window not in the photo but its in the same wall as the window.. the walls are SW aged white just painted. I re

ally appreciate your ideas on how to decorate the bedroom..

A: What if you looked at doing an upholstered headboard so it makes things lighter and feel cozier. Something like you see here in a design of ours:

**Q: Help with furniture layout??** *(in Furniture)*

I have a large famiy room with an awkward floorplan. Enormous fireplace, and a pass through are really stumping me. I’m considering 2 sofas and maybe a built in for the tv? Any suggestions will be appreciated!

A: It looks like you might be able to place a TV over a console on the blank wall across from the fireplace. If you wanted to, you could also sheet rock in the pass through and then have the TV over console there. Either way, you're set up for furniture would depend on where you place the TV. We will include some designs of ours that might help you with layout.

**Q: Help with Dining room layout** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I want to remove everything from this room and redo it. I need more functional cabinet space for storage. That is my front door ahead.
Any suggestions?

A: It seems like, since your front door leads into the dining room, that you also need an entryway. You could easily accommodate this by having a long console table on the wall where you have a small one. Then add a rug, and perhaps look at getting some artwork to hang above the console.

**Q: Need help decorating empty area of living room** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hello,
Need some help to finish decorating the living room, particularly the area by the staircase. Maybe a chair and side table, new art work since the gold doesn't seem to go too well. Only gold we have is in dining room as chandelier but this doesn't really tie in very well. I know coffee table would be nice by couch but given little kids thought I'd hold off for a couple more years so it's more open to play, but feel free to recommend as a forward thinking idea. As far as window treatments right now it's clean modern white roller shades that are up.

A: It seems like you have some really good pieces so far. We might just suggest you add some more seating via some chairs, add a plant in the open area by the staircase, and hang some great art over the fireplace. Notice, in the first picture, how we have a chair flanking the TV area and facing the other seating? This might work for your space.

**Q: Barstool help!!** *(in Furniture)*

Having trouble deciding on barstools for our new kitchen. As you can see the peninsula is very close to the dining table. I don’t want it to be matchy-matchy but definitely want the stools to flow with our dining chairs.

A: There are many different types of stools out there. Since it looks like you have a very small space to make them work in, it might be best to do backless stools. Here are a few ideas from various designs we have done, even including one that isn't backless.
