Studio Boise is a residential design group that started with this idea.  It was an idea inspired by Boise: an idea about how Boise really lives.  How we live with bikes, parks, and rafts for floating the river.  

How we want a crisp, clean living room but will always have the kids’ toys littering the floor.  It was an idea about the start up families recently out of college and the historic home renovators, the in-law quarters built up in North End backyards, and tranquil retirement retreats looking down on the city from the foothills.  Our idea was to start designing the Boise community we love for how Boise residents really live.  

At Studio Boise, we design the home you want to live in and incorporate the function that matches how you live. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Big Island or Island & Penninsula?** *(in Appliances)*

I am redesigning my kitchen and pushing it into my backyard. I am trying to decide if I should do one big island, or keep a peninsula next to my fridge with a smaller island. I am concerned with look and traffic flow. Look at the pictures below. You have to go through the kitchen to get to the left side of the house either way...I'm leaning toward the big Island, but will it look weird to just have the cabinet jutting out from the fridge (and no counter next to fridge)? It seems a little odd to have the stools in the living room. Any input would be appreciated.

A: The sketch I posted is sideways.  Rotate 90° clockwise. Views would not be blocked unless there is more happening not visible in your plan.  Best of luck.

**Q: Dressing three large windows in a row** *(in Windows)*

Our bedroom has three large windows in a row. We've lived in this house for nearly four years and we haven't got round to doing much to them (beyond taking down the heavy yellow curtains the previous owner left - yuck). I'm a bit stumped with what to do with them. I don't want a wall of curtain - too much fabric. We probably need some sort of voile / blackout blind combo? Maybe just a blind for the middle one and blinds and curtain for the two either end? I'm normally quite good at visualising what I want from a room but I'm feeling very uninspired...help! 

Edited to add: We face a reasonably busy road and primary school so needs to offer privacy.

A: I recommend 3 separate window treatments/assemblies.  Emphasize the separation of the 3 windows.  If you lean to the traditional side, Thick fabric covered valances above each window with shear and blackout curtains: 2 per window (opening in the middle).

**Q: Flooring Options for Office Adjoining Hardwood** *(in Home Decorating)*

My townhome mainfloor has an open floor plan with dark hardwood throughout except for an office that has french doors and was originally finshed with tan carpet.  I would like to replace the carpet, but my wife does not like the hardwood color/style enough to spend the money to put the same hardwood (if we could still find it) in the office.  I'm concerned though about adjoining two different hardwood styles/colors together.  We have looked at a much lighter wood, wood-look tile, wood in a herringbone pattern...  Just want to get some thoughts on putting anything other than the same hardwood that is in the rest of the main floor in this office.  I know the general rules seems to be "one hardwood on the same level."  Thanks for your thoughts and advice!

A: My strong recommendation: continue the wood inside the office.  It will give you the best looking result by a long shot even if you are not in love with the existing wood.  A real hardwood is easy for a professional to match and blend.  Do not, and I cannot stress this enough, do not use any fake imitation wood: laminate, vinyl, tile, etc.  One "wood" material will make the other look horrible.

**Q: Help with finishing touches on my kitchen remodel** *(in Remodeling)*

Kitchen looks plain and (obviously) unfinished. I am waiting on the tile to arrive to do the backsplash, but I think even with backsplash done, I am worried it will still look plain.







Upper cabinets are BM White Dove and lower cabinets are BM Kendall Charcoal. Quartz looks plain white in the photos, but it's a marbled quartz.



I will be doing a white 2x6 subway tile backsplash in a herringbone pattern and painting walls and trim BM Dove Wing, so that in itself may help tremendously.

I mainly took inspiration from this home:
This kitchen/home has Dove Wing walls, White Dove cabinets, and the kitchen island is Kendall Charcoal.

Here are a few of the specific items I'm unsure of:
1\. Light fixtures? I've been wanting to change out the light fixtures for a long time, but I can't decide on a style.
2\. Window treatment? I'm thinking a natural bamboo shade would look good and add texture and warmth?
3\. Cabinet hardware? I found pulls I like and they come in black and champagne/honey bronze and I'm not sure which to choose.
4\. Can I spruce up the base cabinets? I have never liked how plain the base cabinets are around the island and peninsula (it's just flat sides). I was debating between tile or wood planks (like shiplap). I am now looking at peel and stick wood boards. Not sure what color or type of wood would work best, but I'm leaning towards a lighter wood tone.
5\. Counter stools? I'm thinking something with natural wood (wood seat, metal legs), but I'm indecisive.
6\. Wood shelves, beams, and accent pieces? Can I fit any wood shelves anywhere? I love all my cabinet storage, but I also love how wood shelves look - just not how they function for actual dinnerware. Other ideas to get wood accents/beams in my kitchen?

A: I think the plainness you note is coming from a combo of a typical gray and white palette without much texture.  Your inspiration photos have the same simple palette, but they all have a lot of texture: T&G on the roof, shiplap around the island, white painted brick fireplaces, etc.  Rather than a smooth, glossy subway tile backsplash which is similar to your counter, use a tile with more dimension: tumbled, beveled, or convex.  Make sure your new lights have texture via fabric or wood, and same with your stools.  Good luck.

**Q: Will a white/ cream carpet be a mistake?** *(in Home Decorating)*

Does anyone have any experience living with a white/ cream carpet? Would you recommend it? Trying to decide between a cream and leaf green carpet for our family room... would like to paint the walls a pale green, so I'd like to put in a cream carpet, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. This is the room we spend most of our time in... just the three of us, including a six year old. No pets. The formal living room is separate.

Would also appreciate any thoughts on choosing between a Shaw Anso nylon and Mohawk's Smartstrand triexta - the ones I'm considering are very comparable in terms of density, face weight, etc.

A: I think carpet is a mistake alltogether for a high traffic room.  If your budget allows for another, non-fabric material, go for that instead.
