> Integrated Wallworks has been fortunate to work with Mantell-Hecathorn Builders on many projects over the years. Their team is organized and professional which makes everyone’s job easier. They build a quality, energy-efficient home and never cut corners. Mantell-Hecathorn Builders is truly one of Colorado’s premier builders. We highly recommend Mantell-Hecathorn Builders.

**★★★★★ — christine jerpbak, Dec. 2021**

> From our first meeting with Mantell-Hecathorn Builders, it was immediately clear that Hunter and Greg were the right team for our project. Our goals for our retirement home in Durango were for a high quality, energy efficient structure, with a design that complemented the building site and surrounding Twin Buttes views. We wanted an open interior design that would meet our changing needs as we aged.
> Hunter and Greg were very easy to work with; they listened to us and were responsive to our wants and needs during both the design and building process. We lived out of state and construction occurred during the Covid pandemic, so we greatly appreciated their constant communication and updates. The team was meticulous with their attention to detail. They are talented and dedicated, ensuring that each area of the home reflected our ideas and met our present and future needs.
> Hunter and Greg are experienced, knowledgeable, and award winners in building extraordinary energy efficient homes. But perhaps the most impressive aspect of working with them is that they made us feel like family. And while sometimes the decisions seemed overwhelming, they and their team were always available to patiently provide ideas, options, and guidance to help us meet our goals.
> Everything about the house and building experience exceeded our expectations and we think it would be very difficult to find anyone who could outperform our Mantell-Hecathorn Dream Team!

**★★★★★ — William Ivison, Sept. 2021**

> Mantell-Hecathorn Builders are without question the best and most experienced Net Zero Energy builder in Southwest Colorado. They pioneered the Net Zero energy efficient home building process in the Durango/Southwest Colorado area, have won statewide awards for this and in our opinion are head and shoulders above any other builders for homeowners who want to build the highest efficiency home possible.
>
> We found Greg Mantell-Hecathorn’ s trustworthiness and attention to detail during the entire building process to be a great relief and a refreshing change from contractors who seem to have an excuse for every problem that arises during construction.
>
> Greg offers solutions to problems and not excuses and gave us peace of mind through the process.
>
> The home was completed as promised by Greg in 7-8 months, not the 12-15 months that some of our neighbors have had to endure for their homes.
>
> I am a retired CPA with over 45 years of experience and expertise; Greg has been a contractor for as long as I was a CPA and his experience, skill and trustworthiness are without question the best I have seen in a builder.

**★★★★★ — Paul Black, Oct. 2020**

> After buying our lot and interviewing a number of local builders, we selected Mantell-Hecathorn Builders as our first choice. Our goal was a Durango home that was built according to green standards of excellence and high energy efficiency. Together with architect Brian Huff of Reynolds Ash and Associates, Greg and Hunter Mantell-Hecathorn were attentive to our goals during the design process that resulted in an open concept dining, living space, and studio linked to an incredible kitchen. This design and construction team made certain our home was placed on the lot to maximize the views of the La Plata Mountains with a deck that is seamlessly connected to the living space. All aspects of the build were of the highest standards. Through personal meetings, phone calls and video conferencing, we were able to collaborate in all aspects of the interior design, which is spectacular and fits our lifestyle exactly. We have the highest regard for Mantell-Hecathorn Builders and recommend them most highly.

**★★★★★ — Gary Gear, Dec. 2019**

> In 2018 I contracted with Mantell-Hecathorn Builders to construct a custom home for my family in the Twin Buttes development in Durango, CO. I highly recommend this company if you are planning to have a residence constructed. These people are true professionals and made a very stressful and expensive project run smoothly. Greg's family and team constructed the highest quality and most energy efficient house I've ever owned. If you are planning to have a new home built, save yourself a lot of headaches and choose the best, Mantell-Hecathorn Builders.

**★★★★★ — Glenn and Cheryl Harsh, Nov. 2019**

> Rated highly for: Value, Quality, Punctuality, Responsiveness
>
> We are thrilled with our new home built by Mantell-Hecathorn Builders. We've built several homes over the years, and this has been our best experience by far! Their attention to detail, responsiveness, and willingness to go "above and beyond" has been stellar. From our first meeting to a final Certificate of Occupancy was less than 11 months, which is phenomenal especially considering we live 1300 miles from Durango and this was not an easy/standard building site. Greg and Hunter have outstanding relationships with subs, and all their subs are exceptional. They were open to alternative suppliers that we suggested. Their budget estimates were spot on, and their office staff is extremely efficient and helpful in every way. The devotion to quality, energy efficiency, value engineering, and creativity are exceptional. Plus, they are genuinely great people that care about their clients, and the level of communication during the process has been great. We HIGHLY recommend them for any home building project in the 4 Corners area; I frankly can't imagine why anyone would choose another builder.

**★★★★★ — Greg Haroun, May 2019**

> I have had the pleasure of working with Mantell-Heckathorn Builders for the past 10 years and i am confident that they have continuously proven that they are one of the best and most capable builders in the area. Their attention to detail, budgets, schedules, and just overall commitment to their projects and clients is truly a testament to the level of care that goes into each home.

**★★★★★ — Lori Large, May 2019**

> Mantel-Hecathorn Builders first contacted our company in 2012. Greg described the high-quality homes they wanted to build in Durango. They were new to the area, however, they had construction experience that reached far beyond many others in Durango. Greg expressed his desire to build a home that would exceed local standards. He expressed his desire to construct a home where the occupants would be comfortable and feel safe. We have installed the fire sprinklers in Mantel-Hecathorn Builders homes since that time. Their projects have been organized, consistent, timely, and professionally managed. We look forward to working with Greg and Hunter for many years. I would strongly suggest that any prospective homeowner consider Mantel-Hecathorn Builders for their next project.

> Aspen Design Studio is honored to have the opportunity to work with the Mantell-Hecathorn team on their custom home projects! When dealing with a builder as organized and experienced as Mantell Hecathorn, it makes our job as a vendor easy and fun. Their clients come in educated about the process, their budget and ready to take the next step in making their dream home come to life. Because MH does such a great job with their clients, we love working with Hunter, Miranda, Greg and Tara. Their work shows quality in craftsman ship throughout and the results are always high quality, timeless beauty.

**★★★★★ — Paul LeNeveu, Dec. 2017**

> I have been painting homes for Greg and Hunter since 2009. They have an unwavering attention to detail. I truly respect their family values in which honesty, pride and hard work are always evident. Greg and Hunter are continually pressing me to adopt safer and environmentally conscious products. Traditionally, painting has introduced toxins into a new house, Greg and Hunter have a clear directive, air quality inside the house is not to be compromised. I appreciate that they want to deliver a safe environment for their clients as much as they want all of the trades to work with safe practices.

**★★★★★ — Solar Works, Sept. 2017**

> Mantell-Hecathorn Builders and Solar Works have partnered to design and build Net Zero homes in Durango for more than 8 years. They have been excellent to work with, wonderful experience throughout each and every project we've done together.

**★★★★★ — Richard Stimler, July 2017**

> As a trades person in the building community here in Durango, it has been my privilege to work with a great group of local builders and contractors. It takes some doing to stand out in such a talented and competent group, and Mantell-Hecathorn Builders has done just that.
> What makes our local builders shine is a commitment to honesty, integrity and quality. M-H Builders has not only embraced these core values, but has put together a team to back this up. We know when we work with M-H Builders, we are working with a company that is organized, efficient, knowledgeable and with an understanding that no detail is too small to overlook.. And foremost in their business approach is a dedication to the homeowner, which, as we all know in the building world, is where the "rubber meets the road".
> If I were in the market for a builder to fulfill my dreams and visions, be it a remodel or an entire house, I would look no further.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Garage door/exterior color suggestions** *(in Paint)*

We bought this 70s house a few years ago. We’re installing a new garage door this year. We are also unsure about the color. The style we are considering is below. My husband wants black but we’ve have a weird block of white on the windows to left and I’m not sure how that would look. We have an odd color combination going on but I’m not sure how to improve it. Any suggestions? Painting the brink and changing the roof are not in the budget for this year. Thanks!

A: Hello Jess. What a fun project! We use Northwest Door / Modern Tech for a majority of our garage doors. I have included a link below.
http://www.nwdusa.com/residential/modern-tech/\#tab-design
They are both durable and promote energy efficiency. I would suggest having the garage door in a dark bronze rather than the black satin finish. The black satin tends to lean more towards a modern contemporary look.

For the remainder of the exterior, which I know you stated you would do at a later date, I suggest modernizing it with an updated color combination by painting the brick a white with a combination of the dark ore color. I included a rough design concept that might be helpful with the garage door included.

Please send us an email and let us know how it turned out.

**Q: Which kitchen chair is best?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I love the cream closeted upholstered chair, but concerned it would get dirty (pasta dinners, crab feasts). The black wooden chairs are durable, but seem uncomfortable. Thoughts?

A: Bassett Furniture has a wooden chair that is so comfortable that you will be able to sit for hours and visit with family and friends.

Detailed below is the link to the chair:
https://www.bassettfurniture.com/Wooden-Dining-Side-Chair---4-Styles--Bench\*Made-Maple-DZ38859.asp

What makes this chair unique is that it is made to order in the United States. The back slat in the middle is formed to the natural curvature of the spine making it extremely comfortable for back support. You are also able to customize this chair by having the frame one color and the seat a different color.

Bassett Furniture also has showrooms where you can go and sit in the piece prior to purchasing.

**Q: Help with small kitchen layout** *(in Remodeling)*

We are about to begin a kitchen remodel. We do not want to take any walls down so we are trying to figure out the best layout with the space we have. Are they any other options than keeping the layout as is? If we remove the cabinets to the left (in the pictures), would that be enough room for an island?? Any help would be great appreciated!

A: The rendering Rebekah Gibbs posted is what we had in mind for the layout. We are all in agreement that there is not sufficient enough space to incorporate an island. By moving the refrigerator to the wall shown in Rebekah's rendering, you will have created an efficient layout of a "kitchen triangle", Typically a leg of the working triangle should be no less than 4' however; given your existing space constraints, we believe Rebekah's layout is the best solution.

**Q: Carpet** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you remember the brand and carpet name/color? Thanks

A: Thank you for the question, I looked into our records and this carpet was made by Dixie Home - Balleto - Cidar House color.
Hope this helps!

**Q: What is cost per square foot please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

We are trying to get an idea of the cost per square foot for a home like this Two Dogs Mountain retreat as we begin to look at home sites in Pagosa Springs.

A: First off, thank you Chris for responding and for taking this beautiful shot, and yes we were recognized by the Department of Energy as one of their 2015 Housing Innovation Award winners and are very proud of it!
As for your question, all of our homes are custom designed and value -engineered to fit each client's budget and therefore have a price per square foot which can range based on client's desires. A few factors which can have an impact on this cost are: site conditions, complexity of design and level of finish. Feel free to contact us directly at info@m-hbuilders.com or you can reach us at (970) 259-5130
Thank you,
Hunter Mantell-Hecathorn
