I want to stay away from white - trying to something more interesting. The currently vanity is an old light wood that I don't love. Thinking painting is the way to go. Thoughts? Oh, this is for a beach house! A: You can do a warm gray with a hint of beige that is on the lighter side. It will look more custom. Try Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. If this is too gray, try Worldly Gray. If you are looking for something beachy, but more on the fun side, you could try SW Rain or Watery **Q: Side splash - yes or no?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Would you add a side splash to the left side wall? (Not going to use a tiled one) but would use the marching crema marfil side splash. Also, I need help on wall art. Should I look for one picture over the toilet or two stacked on top of each other? I was thinking a mahogany framed print(s) since the cabinet is mahogany to tie the nicely together. On the opposite wall directly in front of the toilet, should I put more artwork there? I used to have a towel bar there but I don't want it there anymore as this bathroom won't be used for baths, showers etc A: No to the side splash. As for art, it depends on how much you have in the rest of your home. If you are big on wall decor, then you can use more. I would consider doing something over the toilet that is more of a wall "sculpture" rather a framed piece since the mirror is right there. Then on the wall with the door, you could do three pieces of framed square art. Remember to keep the space between them small, and dont be afraid to hang the bottom one below the typical height. **Q: Dark living room** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am looking for ideas on a new home I will be purchasing. Should I paint the paneling and fireplace? A: I would paint the paneling as you would typical walls, paint the crown and base in a typical trim color, and then do a lighter version of the wall color on the ceiling. I would also consider having the fireplace refaced. There some companies that do this for a steal and it can completely change the room! **Q: Paint or stain a new deck?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have a deck, and I am trying to decide if we should paint it, or stain it. What is the current trend. A: And it will require maintenance, typically every 2 years on the horizontal surfaces and 4-6 on the verticals. TWP is pretty easy to maintain. **Q: Need help with two story great room!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, we are first time home owners and we need help choosing colors to repaint and decorate our two story family room. We have been thinking about using a combination of Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray hc-170 and Edgecomb gray hc-173. Honestly, we don't like how this room is painted now, see pictures... Please send us your ideas, thanks in advanced :) A: Sherwin Williams Functional Gray has just enough beige to keep it warm, but is a truer gray. It has become my go to. I would paint the white space around and in the picture moldings too, it looks too heavy for the tiny fireplace. A large area rug, and perhaps 2 sofas facing each other. I would move the tv too. You can have the tv in a place easy to view, but still keep the fireplace as the focal point. **Q: Fireplace Re-do** *(in Design Dilemma)* This fireplace is 20 years old and in need of an upgrade. Advice would be greatly appreciated. A: If you are not looking to refinish, painting the brick could look really nice. However, if you do not wish to paint it or re-face it, I would have the ledge covered with a chunky wood to look like a floating mantle. But nothing too dainty, as it quite large! If your budget is a little more friendly, but not large, you could do the above, but have the bottom re-faced to pull off a more custom look.
