> We could not be happier to have hired Katie Hutchinson and Katie Hutchinson Studio to help us design and build our new house. Katie Hutchinson worked closely with us throughout the process, from an empty, wooded lot to move in condition, from proposing a creative and innovative way of orienting the house on the lot to final design details. She was always responsive to our vision for the house, including our desire to make it as environmentally sustainable and contributed many invaluable ideas that made it possible. Katie helped us to find and to coordinate with a general contractor and landscape architect. She worked seamlessly with our contractor, and her attention to detail and comprehensive plans allowed us to avoid unnecessary surprises and unexpected delays. We strongly recommend Katie Hutchinson.

**★★★★★ — Larry Bacher, Feb. 2025**

> Our 1980's contemporary was eclectic, even for its time. Katie's charge was to update the functionality and give the home a more New England feel, relating to its community. We also asked for accessibility updates to keep the house as a place we could continue to live as we retire to start that long road toward aging. Katie showed a remarkable eye for how minor detail changes could subtly change the whole feel of the house. She throughly understands the residential problem. She was able to present clear and crisp solutions to questions we raised, and raised others we didn't know we should have. Presented with the universe of choices one can make regarding the parts and pieces of a residential project, she quickly narrowed our focus to two or three that were appropriate to the vision, which made our decision-making easy. Katie's drawings were detailed and clear. During construction, she worked closely with us and with the contractor to see that the inevitable questions were quickly resolved in a sensible way. We could not have been more fortunate than to identify Katie as the right architect to help us get to this beautiful and functional result.

> Katie proved to be the perfect person to work with. The project was complicated, my vision for it was muddy, and house was in dire-straits. I knew it had potential, but had no idea what really could be done. I had a lot of desires, but assumed I'd have to make many compromises.
>
> What I needed was someone that could bring creativity and vision. But also someone that could walk me through the entire process. Katie worked to understand what I was looking for, then came back with ideas beyond what I was expecting. Then as the project progressed, she walked me through each step. Her poise, clarity, and eye for detail kept me confident all along the way. The result is something I can be proud of, and that she can be proud of.
>
> I would be thrilled to work with with Katie again. However it will probably never happen, as I now happen to live in the perfect house.

> My experience with Katie Hutchison was entirely positive. I found her on Houzz and contacted her to design a new front porch for my century-old two-family home in New Bedford. The old porch had gone through several iterations and was sorely in need of replacement. Katie visited my home to assess the porch and we walked around the neighborhood together, looking at other porches and the general character of the area. I told her the ideas I had in mind and she developed some lovely drawings. I had some small revisions to the design and she accommodated every detail. Katie contacted several contractors with her specifications for the job and we got three quotes. We talked to two of the contractors and she helped me choose the best one for my project and negotiate the final price. When construction began, Katie was on site several times to verify that the contractor followed the design accurately. When there were some minor deviations, she took action to make sure they were corrected. In every instance, Katie listened to my perspective and made sure I was happy with the project. The end result was just what I wanted and a big improvement to the appearance and livability of my home. On the business side of working with Katie, she gave me a clear idea of what her charges would be for the design and follow-up during construction. She billed me periodically with detailed invoices explaining how much time was spent on each task. Her business practices gave me confidence in the fairness of her prices. I had a great experience with Katie and recommend her to anyone looking for an architect with excellent taste who is considerate, patient, experienced, and reliable.

> We knew, when we saw the compact space to be renovated, that Katie would be the perfect architect with whom to work. From seeing her prior projects we knew that her clean, crisp and efficient use of space and light would be ideal for this project. Katie was easy to work with, insightful and understanding in a way that made the process a pleasure. If you should have the chance to work with her, do yourself a favor and choose to do so. We are sure you will be as pleased with the ideas, process and final result as we have been.

> Katie is a dream to work with, she is on time, detail oriented and creative. I would definitely work with her again on another project. she designed a beautiful custom made vanity to suit our bathroom.
> We love it. Thank Katie!

**★★★★★ — Howard Rotblat-Walker, Nov. 2019**

> This was a successful project thanks to Katie. She transformed a space badly lacking in storage into a comfortable, attractive, very usable space because of her excellent, imaginative design. Her guidance and assistance with the details (not just cabinets and counters, but things like lighting, backsplash tile, paint) helped keep things integrated. She put lots of resources before us; choosing could have been daunting, but Katie asks questions about preferences that helps focusing to a desired end. Kitchens are complex with lots of parts to consider. Katie is knowledgeable about these aspects, so it all comes together. Being an architect, not just a designer, she has thorough knowledge of the factors involved from the bare studs, plumbing and electrical to the finished project.
> Her experience helped with the management of the project. Katie was indispensable from start to finish. She's the consumate professional. We were completely satisfied with her work and would use her for any project without second thoughts.

**★★★★★ — Marc Sevigny, June 2017**

> We own an antique home that was last renovated in the 1940s. KHS was able to help us through all aspects of the renovation process. Starting from measured drawings, Katie expertly helped us iterate through possible floor plans, taking our lifestyle and personal preferences into consideration. Katie has a deep understanding of space and visual relationships between spaces. We worked though multiple layout schemes and she supplied her input of the benefits and downsides of each, refining it to a layout that worked well given all of the constraints. Our project had a deed restriction that required us to remain within the current footprint. Being in an Historic District also meant making no significant exterior changes. Our primary goal was to modernize the space which had terribly dated kitchen and baths, but also open up the tiny spaces to take better advantage of natural light and enjoy the beautiful view of the property.
>
> Our initial consultation described the process in detail. After discussions of materials and finish preferences, we were given a very rough cost estimate (per sq ft). Subsequent budget discussions helped us determine the scope of the renovation and priorities. We were provided with an estimate of the cost of architectural services broken out into several categories, including production of measured drawings (as-built), schematics, consultations with structural engineers (as needed), contractor selection, production of construction drawings, electrical/lighting plan, site visits, etc. The estimates proved very close to actual costs incurred. We added on additional design services for assistance with color palette, lighting selection, and interior fixtures.
>
> Katie cleverly designed a combination open dining/kitchen area that was complicated by doorway, window and exterior wall locations. Our preference to have dining table seating for 8 in a narrow space was wonderfully solved with the implementation of a wall banquette, an elegant solution which provides ample seating without encroaching on circulation. The banquette allows for a custom table that can be extended to seat more guests, when needed. The space feels ample, warm and comfortable with wonderful viewpoints and design elements.
>
> Another feature Katie recommended was a custom shelf enclosure which ties together cabinets on either side of a large casement window in the kitchen. This element, while simple in design, brings a cohesive feel to the room's minimal upper cabinetry, while also allowing for unobtrusive use of overhead task lighting along a lengthy countertop work area.
>
> Given so many limitations, we are extremely happy with the results. We especially loved having an architect that is also a design consultant, so we were able to get guidance on paint colors, lighting choices, and professional decorative help with our project, in addition to the floor plan/layout.

> Approximately two years ago, I was fortunate enough to commence with work on a significant renovation / addition project for my home. From the very beginning of the project, Katie and I developed an effective and satisfying architect-client relationship built on a foundation of confidence, collaboration and a mutual respect. We started by establishing overall project outcomes, aligning on expectations, and establishing a communications plan. And from the get-go, I was pleasantly surprised that Katie and I shared similar design sensibilities. And it was this mutual understanding that resulted in the realization of my vision for a simple, non-ornate, classic New England design, one with clean, classic lines – a smallish, cozy home with interesting spaces and restrained elegance. We both understood the paramount importance of coming together on a design that blended in well with the established character of this sea-side community. In addition to collaborating on the plan and design, Katie expertly managed the budget, administered the construction contract, and guided me through the local town permitting and zoning approval process, all of which gave me the peace of mind I needed and resulted in a project that was on schedule and on budget. As I sit here writing this review from my newly renovated home, I can say I couldn’t be happier with the result. Thanks again, Katie!

**★★★★★ — Dawn Oliveira / Oliveira Textiles, Oct. 2016**

> Collaborating with Katie Hutchison Studio on two recent home renovation projects has been a total joy. When Katie approached Oliveira Textiles to create several custom colorways of our contemporary, sea-inspired patterns, I was immediately excited. We share a belief in sustainability and restraint with regard to 21st century design so I knew immediately this would be a dream working relationship. Katie's clean, modern style, creative design approach, and unwavering attention to detail leads to beautiful results and gleeful clients. I can attest to that after seeing the delight on the faces of these homeowners and their guests at a recent 'home warming' party. I can't recommend Katie Hutchison Studio highly enough. **★★★★★ — Tiro Design & Construction LLC, Oct. 2013**

> Katie is an exceptional designer with vast knowledge of the New England vernacular as well as less traditional styles and trends in architecture. I am myself an architectural designer and constructor, but when my husband and I decided to build the perfect little garden "cabana" we hired Katie because I knew she would come up with the best possible design with ease and sensitivity. The result was a little building that turned heads, brought people down our driveway for a closer look, and ultimately landed in Cottage Living Magazine. I can highly recommend Katie for architectural design if you really want your building to standout from the crowd, or if you want it to look like it's been there for a couple of centuries!

**★★★★★ — huntleyskinner53, Oct. 2013**

> Katie has been a wonderful professional to work with. She is creative, very diligent and timely in her work. Katie has helped us organize our project very well, educating us on the entire design and building process. She has been very conscious about keeping us on budget and has worked very collaboratively with our builder. Katie listens well to our ideas, and is flexible and adaptive with her ideas. Her drawings, plans and schedules are clear and complete. We have wanted to be ecologically careful and design a home that is respectful of environmental factors. She has been a great support in these areas. She has also been a big help in designing our soft interior designs, carpets, window treatments, furniture, pillows etc. She helped us repurpose furniture that compliments our vision and has sensitively advised us on moving on items that do not compliment our project design. She has an eye for light, color and simplicity that I appreciate. She is the whole package.

  - Location: Westerly, RI
  - Photos: 68
  - Description: As readers of architect/designer Katie Hutchison’s book The New Cottage (Taunton Press 2018), these homeowners approached KHS about designing a second home in Westerly, Rhode Island. Theirs is a double-long lot with street frontage on both ends, a short walk from the water. In addition to the new house, their wish list included a new lap pool (with associated patio) and new garage. Aesthetically, they were looking to create an informally elegant, human-scaled family compound, engaged with the si…

  - Location: Barrington, RI
  - Photos: 51
  - Description: This project for a builder husband and interior-designer wife involved adding onto and restoring the luster of a c. 1883 Carpenter Gothic cottage in Barrington that they had occupied for years while raising their two sons. They were ready to ditch their small tacked-on kitchen that was mostly isolated from the rest of the house, views/daylight, as well as the yard, and replace it with something more generous, brighter, and more open that would improve flow inside and out. They were also eager fo…
- [Riverside Cottage Renovation/Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/riverside-cottage-renovation-addition-pj-vj~6837464)
  - Location: East Providence, RI
  - Photos: 76
  - Description: When the owner of this petite c. 1910 cottage in Riverside, RI first considered purchasing it, he fell for its charming front façade and the stunning rear water views. But it needed work. The weather-worn, water-facing back of the house was in dire need of attention. The first-floor kitchen/living/dining areas were cramped. There was no first-floor bathroom, and the second-floor bathroom was a fright. Most surprisingly, there was no rear-facing deck off the kitchen or living areas to allow for o…
- [Barrington Contemporary Renovation/Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/barrington-contemporary-renovation-addition-pj-vj~7588491)
  - Location: Barrington, RI
  - Photos: 32
  - Description: Custom-built in the early eighties, this contemporary home was cloaked in all brown board siding with brown windows and a cumbersome street-facing carport. The current owners had raised their family there on property that borders serene conservation land. Now they were ready for a new, brighter exterior look that would include all new windows to take in the exquisite view, unobscured by the fog of failing window seals; new siding that wouldn’t be subject to woodpecker wear and tear; a refinished…
- [Barrington Modern Bathrooms Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/barrington-modern-bathrooms-renovation-pj-vj~7158128)
  - Location: Barrington, RI
  - Photos: 29
  - Description: The owners of this custom 1980’s contemporary home were ready for a new look that they aim to achieve in several phases. Their first priority was reimagining three bathrooms: a powder room, guest bath, and master bath. The original bathrooms were dark and in a grim brown palette. Renovations included new windows and a new gray-and-white palette with accents of warm clear-finished Sapele (in the form of custom, floating vanities), and brushed-nickel hardware. Each renovated bathroom was conceived…

  - Location: Warren, RI
  - Photos: 49
  - Description: After returning from a winter trip to discover his house had been flooded by a burst second-floor pipe, this homeowner was ready to address the renovations and additions that he had been pondering for about a decade. It was important to him to respect the original character of the c. +/- 1910 two-bedroom small home that had been in his family for years, while re-imagining the kitchen and flow. In response, KHS proposed a one-story addition, recalling an enclosed porch, which springs from the fro…

  - Description: Inspired by the Campground cottages of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, this new garage with living space above is an accessory building to the KHS-designed Touisset Small House Renovation/Addition. It replaces a previous one-story garage and sits on its 16-foot by 22-foot foundation. In the upper-level sitting room, custom Gothic-revival style doors open to a cantilevered intimate balcony overlooking the backyard. A bracketed roof overhang above the balcony invites sheltered outdoor living. Ins…

  - Location: Wenham, MA
  - Photos: 53
  - Description: Constructed in two phases, this renovation, with a few small additions, touched nearly every room in this late ‘50’s ranch house. The owners raised their family within the original walls and love the house’s location, which is not far from town and also borders conservation land. But they didn’t love how chopped up the house was and the lack of exposure to natural daylight and views of the lush rear woods. Plus, they were ready to de-clutter for a more stream-lined look. As a result, KHS collabo…

  - Location: Harvard, MA
  - Photos: 67
  - Description: The new owners of this house in Harvard, Massachusetts loved its location and authentic Shaker characteristics, but weren’t fans of its curious layout. A dated first-floor full bathroom could only be accessed by going up a few steps to a landing, opening the bathroom door and then going down the same number of steps to enter the room. The dark kitchen faced the driveway to the north, rather than the bucolic backyard fields to the south. The dining space felt more like an enlarged hall and could…
- [Bristol Kitchen Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bristol-kitchen-renovation-pj-vj~5908462)
  - Location: Bristol, RI
  - Photos: 24
  - Description: When the owners of this eat-in kitchen in a c. 1910 Cape contacted me they were ready to transform it from a tired cluttered look to a bright and clean aesthetic in keeping with their more modern taste. Plus, they needed more storage; they had been storing pots and pans in the oven. The reconfigured renovated gray-and-white kitchen moved the stove to a new island generous enough to accommodate seating for four, which freed up space for full-height cabinetry storage in the location of a former co…

  - Description: This new 12’ x 18’ outbuilding in Manchester, Mass. functions as a garage in the winter and as an outdoor living space in the spring through fall. It replaced a tired, metal garage in a similar location. The garage/garden room adapts seasonally thanks to a pair of cedar, carriage-style doors that swing open toward the driveway and another pair of glazed, cedar, barn-like doors that slide wide open on the garden side for easy yard access. Here New England vernacular details are combined with the…

  - Description: This new four-bedroom house with three and one-half baths and an attached two-car garage was designed to take advantage of a long, narrow, buildable area on a Cape Cod lot bordering wetlands. It’s composed of clean-lined, simple, shingled forms with gable and shed roofs. Natural light travels deep within the shared living spaces thanks to an open family/dining/kitchen area with ample windows (including facing clerestory windows) and a building width of twenty-two feet. A rear screen porch and de…

  - Description: This larger home, constructed on Martha’s Vineyard, is a collection of informal, dormered gable components and grounding one-story, shed-roof elements that reduce its overall scale. Designed to take advantage of a gently sloping up-Island property, this 5500 sq. ft. (not including finished basement) six-bedroom home includes staggered floor levels that climb from the front of the site to the rear. - Description: This one and one-half story, in-town, simplified Gothic Revival on Martha’s Vineyard has had a handful of alterations over the years. The latest is the addition of a new shed dormer which we designed to join an existing shed dormer, forming an ell. The result increased headroom, daylight, and ventilation, greatly improving a bedroom, while creating space for a new full bath and additional closets. The new dormer is nested in the primary roof and fitted with casement windows to match the existing…

  - Description: After living in this c. 1785 Georgian for twelve years, the owners wanted to improve existing room function and access to daylight and views, while preserving the character of their historical home. Their primary goals included creating: an enlarged kitchen, a more conveniently located mud room, a reconfigured driveway with new entry porch, a more generous second-floor master bath, additional second-floor closets, and a better visual and physical relationship to the rear yard and woods beyond. - Location: New Bedford, MA
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: The previous front porch — captured in the “before” photos of the slideshow — was puzzling. The owner of this two-family home in New Bedford wasn’t sure how it had evolved, but both the first- and second-floor porch levels appeared to have been added on top of previous porches, which made for very curious enclosing guardrails. When the owner approached KHS, she was ready to completely remove the haphazard porches and start fresh with something more in keeping with her American Foursquare-style h…

  - Location: Newton, MA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: The existing kitchen in this turn-of-the-century (c. 1901) home in Newton, MA was in dire need of updating when the owners acquired it for their family of four. They wanted to both enlarge it and open it up to an existing adjacent dining space that they planned to transform into a family sitting area. In the spirit of the home’s original classical columns and detailing, we introduced short Doric columns on half-walls to shape a new opening between the former dining space, now family room, and th…

  - Description: This Salem, Mass. renovation to a condominium within an historic sea-captain’s house, converted a small, ill-conceived 1980’s kitchen into an affordable, semi-custom kitchen that provides today’s conveniences in an antique context. The wall treatment, colors, and wide pine flooring used in the circa 1768 dining room, which is open to the kitchen, inspired the newly renovated space. A combination of open, upper, wood shelves and dividers topped with short cabinets instead of full-height overheads…

It’s side-gabled so that the primary roof slope follows the direction of the hillside slope and keeps the front elevation from appearing overly tall. Re-doing kitchen

A: Hi, if memory serves, the upper cabinets are Bleeker Beige from Benjamin Moore http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/bleekerbeige\#ce\_s=Bleeker Bei . The walls are Manchester Tan (also from Ben Moore http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/manchestertan\#ce\_s=Manchester) and the lower cabinets and trim were a custom putty green that we had made to match an existing wainscot in the adjacent dining room.

**Q: Laundry closet** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi, I have a small laundry closet and need a set just like this. Can you please tell me what kind of w/d and the size of the closet?

A: Hi Kerry. Those are GE machines. I'm not sure if those models are still available. WSXH208HWW Frontload Washer: 36”H 25 ¾”D x 26 ¾”W; DSXH43EFWW Frontload Dryer: 36”H x 25 ¾”D x 26 7/8”W. The closet was sized according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
