> We have done 2 projects with DJA and both were outstanding. First, DJA designed a complete renovation of our home in Cleveland Park. They did a fantastic job. Professional, imaginative, friendly -- a real joy to work with. The renovation was on time and on budget and exactly what we wanted. We then worked with DJA on a family beach house. This was a complete new build on an existing site -- very remote. Notwithstanding the distance from DC, and an environment much different than WDC, DJA did another outstanding job. I recommend DJA without reservation and would not consider using anyone else. DJA is just top notch.

> When we decided to build a house, we were limited in our budget, but we decided to go for the best anyway. Ultimately, we saved money because there were no mistakes, no re-dos, and our builder Mauck, Zantzinger and Associates had very few question on the meticulous architectural plans that David Jones crafted. We were on budget, and our house was finished one month BEFORE scheduled.
>
> David has won awards on the design of our house. One reason may be that I trusted him throughout the process. When you hire the best, you can stay out of the way so he is free to design. There are times when strangers driving or walking by our house stop and say how much they love our house. On a rare occasion, they have even asked for a tour. No one is disappointed. It is a show piece, but it is also a livable and inviting place to stay.
>
> Nine years later, we couldn't be more pleased with the house that David Jones designed.

- [Kenwood House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/kenwood-house-pj-vj~288246)
 - Location: Chevy Chase, MD
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: In this handsome, established neighborhood just outside Washington DC, we sought to build a restrained house at once compatible with its neighbors and maximizing the potential of its large, yet awkwardly shaped lot. Configured linearly, the house features stairs and service areas at the front, while the main rooms open onto expansive rear terraces and a walled garden. The wood-paneled library offers views onto the adjacent circular park, the symbolic center of the neighborhood. Awards: 2006 Palla…
- [Stone Farmhouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stone-farmhouse-pj-vj~288242)
 - Location: McLean, VA
 - Photos: 7
 - Description: We designed this house to reflect the Northern Virginia neighborhood's modest scale while still accommodating the owners' growing family. It was designed as a simple stone farmhouse—sturdy and vernacular—with later “additions” to give the sense of being built over time. This narrative unfolds as the visitor turns up the private drive; the true size of the house is revealed only as one approaches the front door. Awards: 2009 Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Shutze Award for Excellence i…
- [Beach House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/beach-house-pj-vj~315096)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: The owner of this property grew up in a New England town renowned for its Shingle Style architecture. Our goal was to capture the drama and romance of that style in this new beach house. On the exterior, dark green trim and ribbons of multi-paned windows contrast with shingled walls and low-sloping roofs. Inside, a gracious Living/Dining Room at the heart of the home opens to the kitchen and screened porch. Awards: 2008 Palladio Award - National Award for Best New Traditional House
- [Cape Cod Cottage](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/cape-cod-cottage-pj-vj~288235)
 - Location: Truro, MA
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This new oceanfront cottage, located in the Cape Cod National Seashore, features three vernacular shingled buildings inspired by the iconic forms of early New England seaside architecture. Minimalist glass hyphens connect the forms and flood the interior spaces with natural light. We looked to the constant horizon and the natural drama of this place, about which Henry David Thoreau once wrote “A man may stand there and put all America behind him", to guide the design. Awards: 2013 Palladio Award…
- [Greek Revival](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/greek-revival-pj-vj~351929)
 - Location: Washington, DC
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This new house overlooking parkland and the Potomac River features a vernacular Greek Revival style to reflect the classicism of the nation's capital and the family's New Orleans heritage. With the main entry located on the side, the expansive living room and a trio of shuttered French doors offer uninterrupted access to the porch and the panoramic views beyond. The family room similarly spans the back, looking onto the terrace and garden. The open entry/stair hall and kitchen connect these larg…
- [Georgetown Alterations](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/georgetown-alterations-pj-vj~351884)
 - Location: Washington, DC
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: We reconfigured the first floor of this 1911 Georgian home to enhance the flow between the house and its spacious rear garden. A new family room bay expands the former kitchen wing. The antique greenhouse was replaced with a modern conservatory structure housing an airy eat-in kitchen. Service areas are placed between public rooms in front and private family spaces at the rear. Above the living room bay, the master bedroom suite features a balcony overlooking the garden. Awards: 2010 Washington…
- [Waterfront Retreat, St. Michaels](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/waterfront-retreat-st-michaels-pj-vj~315094)
 - Location: DC Metro, MD
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Enamored by the idyllic setting on a Chesapeake Bay tributary, the owners turned to us to re-imagine the existing 1950s Cape that came with it. We kept much of the existing structure, reorganizing it around a new central Living/Dining room that opens onto a colonnaded porch with beautiful water views. We raised the roof to accommodate a new second floor Master Bedroom suite and porch, giving the house a commanding waterfront presence. White-painted brick, clapboard, and wood trim unify the compos…
- [Arts and Crafts Addition](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/arts-and-crafts-addition-pj-vj~315095)
 - Location: Potomac, MD
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: Reflective of the original house, this new family room wing has its stylistic roots in the English Arts and Crafts architecture of CFA Voysey. A large, curving bay offers views of the wooded site, while high dormer windows and French doors provide additional sunlight to this grand yet simple space. Rift oak wainscoting and cabinetry, wrought iron lighting fixtures, leaded glass cabinet fronts, a copper range hood and a kitchen Inglenook fireplace continue this architectural theme.
- [Classic Shingle Style Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/classic-shingle-style-residence-pj-vj~483666)
 - Location: Potomac, MD
 - Photos: 9
 - Description: This shingle and stone house melds a traditional exterior with a more modern, open interior. Rooms along a gallery which runs the length of the house are allowed to flow one into another, defined by changes in floor level, differences in ceiling height, square columns and beams.

- [Queen Anne Revival](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/queen-anne-revival-pj-vj~479958)
 - Location: Chevy Chase Village, MD
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: This ca. 1907 Queen Anne house sits on a prominent corner property in the Chevy Chase Village Historic District. When built, it featured a picturesque asymmetrical façade, a generously overhanging red slate roof, and a prominent wraparound porch fronting the two streets. Subsequent owners had "modernized" the house over time, covering the wood siding with aluminum, removing the porch, and wasting much of the rear yard on a driveway and parking area. With the help of an early photograph and histo…

- [Georgian Manor](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/georgian-manor-pj-vj~481366)
 - Location: Potomac, MD
 - Photos: 18
 - Description: The clients wanted a large, light-filled house to accommodate extended family visits and frequent entertaining. They were drawn to “Mount Pleasant,” a Georgian country residence on the Schuylkill River outside of Philadelphia, built by a Scottish sea captain in 1761. Our strategy was to accommodate the family’s modern day program within a Georgian five-part composition, with Mount Pleasant serving as the inspiration for the central two-story body of the house. The symmetrical end pavilions echo…
- [Tall Oaks](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tall-oaks-pj-vj~481298)
 - Location: McLean, VA
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: Sited on a knoll in a forest of majestic oaks, this house projects serene strength in it symmetrical Georgian façade. The entrance motif is closely modeled on Willis Polk’s 1915 Filoli estate near San Francisco. Other parts of the house are influenced by the Virginia houses of William Lawrence Bottomley. The plan of the house reflects the client’s wish for their daily life to encircle a garden courtyard. Formal entertaining rooms, family-living areas, bedrooms, home-offices, pool and recreation…

- [Stone Colonial Transformation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stone-colonial-transformation-pj-vj~482292)
 - Location: Chevy Chase, MD
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: New owners bought this stately 1918 home on a prominent corner lot in Chevy Chase Village, just outside Washington DC, to house their growing family. The stone house was sturdy, but badly in need of renovation. The plan was poorly organized and had little connection between the house and ample rear yard. Our approach was to open up the house to the sunlit pool terrace and reorganize the plan to meet the needs of a modern family, while maintaining the historical layout of the house as much as pos…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love roof** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the pitch on this hip roof?

A: The pitch of the main roof is 11:12.

**Q: What are the exterior colors for this home?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I am looking for exterior paint combinations for my new French Chateaux style home. I would love some recommendations.

A: The wall color is a custom integral color stucco, so not an applied paint. The shutters are to match Stone Blue by Farrow and Ball. Thank you for your question!

**Q: Wall Color** *(in Photo Questions)*

Any ideas on the actual wall color? thx

A: This was a custom mixed color for this interior and we do not have access to that formula. Remember that colors photograph very differently than they appear in your home!

**Q: Just wanted to say** *(in Photo Questions)*

Just wanted to say this is a stunning home. I love the lines of it.

A: Thank you for the compliment!

**Q: Could I please know the height and make of the doors?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: These are TruStile wood doors, and they are 9'-2" tall.

**Q: Roof and Siding Material** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi- wondering what kind of roofing material (and color) and type of siding was used on this project. Thanks!

A: The roof is cedar shingles, and the siding is wood. The color of the siding is Benjamin Moore "Windham Cream".
