**Q: Forget Kurapia - I converted my lawn with Lippia (Phyla Nodiflora)** *(in Landscape Design)*

Hi! I have been lurking on this forum and reading about ground cover alternatives to grass. I am on Southern California - Zone 9 B.
I finally ripped out my grass lawn and replaced it with drip irrigation, then planted Lippia aka phyla nodiflora throughout. It is a California native plant \[CalScape Article on Lippia\], and is much cheaper than Kurapia. I was paying <$20 a flat for it.
So far, the Lippia has done great, especially in the parts of the yard that I planted with lots of sun and in the heat of the summer (August, with temp up to 115F). It has required minimal drip irrigation (sometimes none at all during cooler weather) once it was established, has spread easily, and attracted lots of pollinators.

A: Wow great work you definitely made the right call for the IE area! I definitely see Phyla nodiflora struggle to out compete nut sedge and bermuda grass runners though I've been told reducing the watering cycles to 2 days in a row once every 2 weeks deters some of that. Have you found Lippia to be better with out-competing weeds? 

Just  to offer some more takes on the two very closely related species. Because Lippia is a true native strain with greater genetic diversity it has some greater hardiness potential and can work wonders in harsher settings like hot inland climates. The sterilized Phyla nodiflora (close cousin of the former) has been bred to be a tad fluffier and more verdant and has a lot of curb appeal out the gate. Both are awesome options and I and my colleagues in the California native sod industry are working to get some of our state's mrore significant growers to start trialing Lippia in sod form or at least providing more accessible installation options as plugs can be excess labor for some. That being said with both of these plants I highly recommend taking a few cuttings from anywhere you can find 'em and trying to root them in any fast draining soils, particularly in the warm season. These plants will struggle in compacted clay.

**Q: Best grass for Pasadena area** *(in Landscape Design)*

I am debating between installing St Agustin, Celebration Bermuda or Marathon original sod.
I have 2 boys that play soccer and a dog. My dog has a separate potty area but on occasion might go in the grass. I know there is no grass resistant to pet urine but I would like to now what grass you guys would recommend for my area.
My yard is not shaded it will receive direct sunlight.
And yes, I know we should have more drought tolerant yards but I want to have grass until my kids are a little older. Thanks for your help.

A: Turf is terrible for the environment & St. Augustine is quite a beast if you ever want to remove it.  I think the best grass these days is actually a native groundcover... it goes by many names but is most commonly called Kurapia. 

Great for dogs, soccer, doesn't need to be mowed  (stays 2" high) and only needs water once a week (or less in winter). I'm a professional landscape designer in the area and my clients alll can't say enough good things about it

drawbacks: big upfront price tag because the current market form was hybridized in Japanese labs and is tightly controlled by the venture capitalists who did it. BUT it's only a third the cost of artificial turf. 

Bees also love its blossoms when it flowers in spring. Though a quick mow can take care of these I don't recommend it for family's with bee allergies.

**Q: Best grass for kids yard in Los Angeles area** *(in Landscape Design)*

I am currently trying to decide on what type of grass to use for my backyard and would love to hear about your experience. I have a dog and 2 boys that like to play soccer on the yard I need a good grass that will be ok with high traffic in my souther CA weather. So far I am debating between Zoysia, Bermuda and Saint Augustine. Would prefer a grass that doesn’t turn yellow in the fall.

**Q: Please Recommend a Drought-Tolerant Tree for Small Yard** *(in California Gardening)*

Please recommend a tree for our small frontyard in suburban San Diego. The yard is about 50'x25', south-facing, and currently empty. We're looking for something that is drought-tolerant, and relatively small, since our house is just 1-story. I'd like something deciduous so that we have shade in the summer and sun in the winter. My spouse thinks that won't make much difference.
So far our first choice is Japanese Maple based on appearance and size. We're also thinking of Crape Myrtle, which was recommended as a good shade tree by Center for Sustainable Energy. We looked at some plum trees at a nursery today, which looked good.
I'd like to hear other recommendations. Thanks.

A: It sounds like Western redbud is the way to go! Beautiful (and edible) flowers, nice fall color, a great small habit.
