> I am an award-winning architect and general contractor who sought out Hawkeye Windows because they are distributors for Gealan Windows of Germany. We are quite pleased with the windows which we used on two homes.
>
> The service from Hawkeye has been frustrating. We ordered windows for both projects at the same time. Windows were delayed by several weeks more than anticipated which impacted our construction schedule. We might chalk that up to Covid delays, but better communications from Hawkeye would have been appreciated.
>
> In general, my framer and I got the impression from Larry that he didn't seem to know his product (Gealan) well, and getting information from him was an often exasperating struggle. Hawkeye provided no timely details on door sills and minimal information regarding window details. The lack of that information resulted in cost overruns as we had to make field adjustments. On one project Larry shipped the wrong door hardware not once but three times, causing unnecessary trips to a project over an hour away.
>
> We've ordered European windows from other sources in the past, and have never before had the issues we've had with Hawkeye. Perhaps he has too many product lines to keep track of.
>
> That being said, Larry did drive nearly four hours to our site to help with the initial setup. And he did ultimately locate the correct door hardware.
>
> Prospective customers should enter with eyes wide open.

**Comment from Hawkeye Windows & Doors, Inc.:**

> Thank you for your investment with our high quality European windows. We are pleased to read that you are quite satisfied with the window system but are sorry for your issues with the information details. We’re normally known for our exceptional attention to detail, and we regret that we missed the mark when we provided the sixteen drawing files on the window system. We know timely and accurate information is important to a construction schedule so appreciate your concerns being brought to our attention. Therefore, we will reinforce our commitment to providing exceptional pre-sales detailing.

> We had German Unilux windows and doors installed in our new construction home last year, with the project serviced by a local rep here in the Chicago suburbs. Unfortunately, we had a series of issues with our Unilux rep, including the replacement of a broken part on a basement window.
>
> After a year of waiting and being told repeatedly that the part was on its way, I was reluctant to contact our Unilux rep again. Instead, I looked around on the Green Building Advisor website and found Larry Martin's Hawkeye Windows and Doors information.
>
> Unfortunately, Larry doesn’t sell Unilux windows anymore. Nevertheless, after I explained my predicament, he was nice enough to offer to hunt down the same, or similar, Roto hardware part for me.
>
> Within a week or two I had the part in my hand.
>
> Think about that for a second. I wasn’t even really his customer. It would’ve been so easy for him to just say no, he couldn't help me. Instead, he invested time hunting down this random, miscellaneous part for me. I got better customer service from Larry for a $50 part than I did from our own Unilux rep after ordering a whole house worth of windows and doors. It’s astounding in a way, and what a world of difference from a client’s perspective.
>
> It feels like a miracle when, during the construction process, you run across people like Larry.
> I would not hesitate to use or recommend Larry and Hawkeye Windows and Doors.

**Comment from Hawkeye Windows & Doors, Inc.:**

> Thank you for the sincere review, Eric. I appreciate it very much.
>
> I believe the aesthetic beauty, build quality and performance of European windows and doors have tremendous upside potential for our national construction industry. Therefore, I attempt to do all possible to promote the continued use and growth of these impressive systems. And while we no longer carry the limited Unilux lines, our extensive European fenestration supply chain affords us the opportunity to better service our clients, and others, who have invested the time and expense to install these great window systems.

> I hired this company to put a shingled roof over a old metal roof on a mobile home. Larry was very professional and polite. He was able to complete the job in a timely manner. It has now been 7 years and I have had no issues at all. It still looks brand new. I would encourage everyone that needs a roof replaced to contact this company for a quote.

**Comment from Hawkeye Windows & Doors, Inc.:**

> Thank you very much Chris. I had forgotten all about that. While roofing was a major part of my younger construction career, I have since sold that company. Nevertheless, for a long time I did a project here and there for past customers, friends and family. However, I think today I will limit my roofing exposure to the needs of my family. But thanks for the surprise review. Your project was one of my more interesting ones and it is always fun to reminisce about good projects for my great customers.

> Quality products. Very knowledgeable and excellent workmanship. Kept area clean. Hawkeye Windows installed doors and windows for us. Later we installed another 3 deadbolt door into a separate garage that was broken into 2 times before with a standard stock door. The intruders tried again. They couldn't break into the door this time. Instead they drove their vehicle into the wall to knock it off the foundation.... We were very impressed with the door and highly recommend buying the 3 deadbolt door for security for your home and family. Attached pictures.

> Very satisfied with the work Hawkeye Windows has done for us. We had windows installed on our house then several years later had glass replacement on existing front porch windows. Both jobs done well. Quality work.

**★★★★★ — Doug Mills, Oct. 2017**

> I had Larry put in all the windows in my new house in 2005 and I am very pleased with everything.

**★★★★★ — Chuck Earp, Oct. 2017**

> Great personal skill. Thorough in every way in completing the job. Excellent communication skills.. Quality of workmanship second to none. Completed work in a timely manner as stated. Overall a very enjoyable experience made possible in large part by Larry. Anyone hiring LARRY MARTIN can be confident that they have placed their home in the hands of a truly honest and capable professional.

**★★★★★ — Joe Peraud, Oct. 2017**

> Very professional and timely. Came when he said he would; no waiting. Would use again. I have nothing else to say.

**★★★★★ — vollmerbaj, Oct. 2017**

> Hawkeye helped me get really hard to find tilt - turn style windows for my house. Seven years & they are still my favorite things in my custom built house.

**★★★★★ — Stephen Hunter, Oct. 2017**

> Mr. Martin was a very conscientious worker who installed several vinyl windows in our former home. He paid great attention to detail and even worked under poor weather conditions. I would definitely recommend Hawkeye Windows & Doors, Inc.

**★★★★★ — Paul and Cheryl Hillmer, Sept. 2017**

> Very please with the quality of our windows and quality of the workmanship. These windows are so easy to clean - just open them from the inside of your home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: need manufacturer high-end vinyl window with push out casement** *(in Building a Home)*

I am struggling to find a window manufacturer that offers higher-end hardware and a push out casement option (no crank) in a vinyl window. I do not want wood windows even if they are clad on the exterior with a more durable material. Tilt and turn hardware would be nice too as an option. These seem to be offered in many other countries including Canada, but not in the US. Thank you.

A: Yes, Cardinal XLEdge is a fantastic product and reduces seal failure rates 80% from industry norms. However, when industry seal failure rates are already under 1% the diminishing returns of seal failure vs energy savings comes into question. European techniques remove the metal from the spacer to ramp up the energy conservation numbers. They also push those energy numbers further by increasing the overall size of the thermal unit up to 50mm (nearly 2”) in a triple glass configuration. While basic glass technology is nearly identical on both continents, the glass unit in North America is usually limited to lesser performing 7/8” or less for residential windows. Reason being; the sash cannot support the weight and twisting torque force of such a high performing glass pack.

Many conversations can continue on the merits of window technology but it’s telling to know that European windows can be imported in to the States with full warranty; but the inverse cannot be said about America’s domestic brands going to Europe.

**Q: Tilt and turn Sliding door blinds** *(in Photo Questions)*

What blinds are they, do they sit right in the frame?

A: They are
third-party pleated blinds. Attachment
is directly to the sash frame with a stabilizing clip at the bottom. Some even have a small rope runner on each
side to help stabilize the blind during sash movement. Protected but more expensive inside-the-glass blinds are available as a window option.
