## About

### Houzz Badges

The focus of our firm is working with custom clients on custom residential, renovation & additions, small commercial and Tiny Homes serving to meet the needs of a growing city.

It is our belief that a timeless project is a direct result of excellence in design, the client’s ambitions, craftsmanship, and the study of the project’s site and locally available materials. It is through this thoughtful approach to understanding how we live, interact and impact our environment, both today and in the long term that we leave a lasting architectural legacy.

Our design philosophy is one that’s grounded in the traditional where familiar forms such as the shape of a roof, the proportion of a window, and natural building materials work seamlessly together with clean uncluttered lines, open light filled rooms and spaces designed for a modern lifestyle.

Each project in the mountains of WNC is site specific because of unique topographic challenges. The house should therefore be designed to integrate with the site and not the site to the house. There are also opportunities to capture views from living spaces. We calculate sun angles and take advantage of solar pathing to maximize potential for passive solar gain, and to locate photovoltaic cells.

PettlerWorks Architecture is dedicated to client-driven design. The role of the architect is to listen to the needs of the clients first, filter the information then use their experience and knowledge to transform an idea into beautiful design. We look forward to working with you!

**★★★★★ — Tolli Grisham, Jan. 2019**

> Josh has been our architect for over 5 years and multiple projects.
> He designed a separate Homestay within our 100 year old Craftman home, achieving a practical separation while maintaining the character of both spaces; we are delighted that the homestay was just awarded Airbnb Plus designation.
> He has most recently redesigned the interior of a mid-completion log cabin we purchased, giving us an age-in-place design full of customization and character. He's adept at incorporating green building elements and optimizing all available space.
> He has always been patient and professional, though I change my mind frequently. Highly recommend.

**★★★★★ — John McCullough, Dec. 2018**

> Josh is such a pleasure to work with and his designs are spot on. He listens, then takes ideas to the next level. Honest, professional and skilled! He is the best!

- [The Ramble - \#209](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-ramble-209-pj-vj~4612253)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 15
 - Description: This home is designed for a low-sloping tight lot, featuring an efficient plan that accommodates a wide variety of spaces and functions within a traditional layout of well-defined spaces and rooms. As you move through the home, the flow of rooms goes from more public to private with the more informal living areas, and master suite located towards the rear of the home. The additional spaces upstairs are used for a growing family while the back of the home features peaceful expansive porches and d…
- [Hallet Court](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hallet-court-pj-vj~4612315)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 14
 - Description: This Ramble cottage is a study in delivering a design that lives bigger than its actual size. The simple and elegant lines of the front elevation take their cues from a more traditional farmhouse design while introducing unique elements that add whimsy reminiscent of English Arts and Crafts such as the swooping large front gable, bracketed porch columns, and a large shuttered front facing window. Not a single inch of space was wasted on the interior with a compact plan that features a full maste…
- [The Villages at Crest](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-villages-at-crest-pj-vj~4611312)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 8
 - Description: This small lot in a cottage community afforded very little space to develop a plan that featured a master on main with parking for two. Very little usable space was wasted on the lot, which required a unique L-shaped plan. This plan backed into the large community garden where it was ideal to have the Living space transition to a wide screened porch with a fireplace that allowed for direct access to the garden. Access to the screened porch is adjacent to the great room with the master Suite on t…
- [Hibriten](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hibriten-pj-vj~4610918)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This home is built on an infill lot on a quiet street behind the Historic Montford neighborhood. The goal of this project was to maximize the width of the lot without going too far down slope to minimize foundation costs while keeping the square footage above grade below 1,800. Addressing the front of the home is a wide Timber framed front porch. The Main Level living space is extended out to the rear of the home and the wooded views by connecting it to both a screened porch and expansive Deck.…
- [The Orchards at Crest](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-orchards-at-crest-pj-vj~4611366)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This single-level home was designed to have a clean efficient design with low-maintenance materials and modern conveniences. It features a compact shape to align with the land’s unique topography. The exterior detailing takes it cues from a more traditional bungalow Craftsman designed home. The pergola-styled entry with timber detailing gives the home an Asian-inspired flair. The roof eaves are interrupted by gables centered over the windows with a slatted shading device providing protection fro…
- [Chicken Hill](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/chicken-hill-pj-vj~4611474)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 11
 - Description: This home sits on a vantage point between downtown Asheville and the River Arts District, in an infill city lot. The dominant single gabled roofline, clean simple lines, and traditional detailing are inspired by the historic mill houses of the area. The use of Corten siding, metal accents, box gutters, and unique timber detailing on the deck update those traditional forms allowing the home to appear more contemporary, complementing the eclectic architecture of the neighborhood. Due to the small…
- [Haw Creek](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/haw-creek-pj-vj~4611409)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 12
 - Description: This challenging up-slope lot required a unique linear plan allowing for the interiors to capture the amazing views, while keeping foundation costs low. The back of this home is benched into the side of a mountain allowing for a narrow building pad for the main living spaces to be built into. Even though the plan is narrow, keeping the spaces open and flowing allow the plan to live larger than the square footage might suggest. The dominant central gable and flaking gabled wings are inspired by,…
- [Tahkieostie](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/tahkieostie-pj-vj~4611047)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: This West Asheville Craftsman home offers a unique vantage point for views of the Biltmore Estate from the upper levels. The small, sloping lot requires a tight, efficient plan that allows for the garage to be tucked under the lower level with a spacious Master bedroom on the upper level that includes a vaulted ceiling and tall windows to bring in abundant sunlight. In order to have clear, unobstructed views, the entry was tucked into the side of the house providing a large Great Room with a wid…
- [Falcon Ridge](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/falcon-ridge-pj-vj~4612103)
 - Location: Asheville, NC
 - Photos: 13
 - Description: This NC Green Built home provides a beautiful vantage point with short and long-range views of the mountains surrounding the City of Asheville. The steep sloped lot requires a plan that is wider than it is deep to minimize the footprint and site disturbance, and provide views from the main living areas, Master Bedroom quarters and expansive porches. The exterior detailing is both contemporary, with clean lines and few decorative features, as well as natural, using stone, wood siding, and timber…

## Community Q&A

**Q: can you please tell me the color combination used for this beautiful h** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please tell me the color combination used for this beautiful house?

A: Paint colors for this house were chosen by the Owners and we don't have any record of what was used. Thank you for your questions.

**Q: is there a roof underneath the deck? If so, what type is it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have an idea of building a deck over my garage and would like to know how your deck is done?

A: I would recommend contacting a local design professional and contractor to help you install a new deck over your garage. In general, yes you'll need to remove the roof over the garage and install a new flooring system with proper waterproofing, drainage and the finish surface(s) you're looking for. To determine this, a full understanding of the existing structure, your budget and aesthetic needs would be needed to provide the right solution.

**Q: Where can I buy that console table** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell me where did you get the console table from?

A: Thanks for the question.
The furnishings in this home we're purchased by the homeowner and I don't have any information on where it was purchased. Based on the look I would assume this piece was purchased from a local artisan here in Asheville, NC.

**Q: what are the dimensions of the stair platform?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Thank you

A: Approximately 36" deep (to the wall) and 48" wide (to accommodate both newel posts.)

**Q: roof shingle color/brand?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Nice!

A: Hi, thank you for your question.
Selections for this home were done in collaboration with the owner and builder and I don't have specific documentation. But I believe we went with Birchwood, HDZ by GAF.

**Q: What color are the garage door?** *(in Photo Questions)*

They go very well with the house colors. Thanks.

A: Thanks again! I do not have any information available for the stain selections either.
