> After a disappointing experience with another landscape maintenance company, my homeowners association contacted Clemens on the recommendation of a board member who had had a good experience with them. Kristin came out to evaluate the project and was extremely knowledgeable, immediately identifying some heat stressed plants and explaining the importance of year-round watering during times of light precipitation. There were several other observations and recommendations offered on the spot. We talked about the importance of good communication and accessibility crew managers. We are several months into Clemens taking over and homeowners have noticed an improvement as bushes and trees are tidier and healthier.

> I hired Clemens & Associates for a landscaping makeover of my patio. They did an excellent job. The patio has a large shaded area surrounded by hardscape that is in full sun. Hannah, did an excellent job of designing the patio for shade tolerant plants and plants that needed full sun that were placed in a variety of ceramic planters and containers. Hannah and her team executed the project perfectly and created a very pleasant oasis in which I can relax and enjoy nature. I recommend Clemens & Associates for your next landscaping project without reservation.

> Clemens is extremely poorly managed and unprofessional in the way in which it deals with its clients. Over 3 years of doing business with them, we experienced repeated billing & bookkeeping errors, excessive markups on materials & equipment, constant staff turnover and poor client service. While they mostly maintained our garden and landscaping ok, the hassle of dealing with their unprofessionalism, outrageous pricing, repeated incompetence (their crew cut off a major & very visible limb of a heritage Pinon tree in our front yard by mistake!) and inability to retain quality staff and crews, just made us happy to leave them and find a better alternative. As an experienced Financial Officer, I was particularly offended by their deceptive business practices. Avoid them!

**Comment from Clemens & Associates Inc.:**

> We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of the significant landscape project completed for us by Clemens & Associates in 2020. From the outset, Catherine Clemens was personally involved in brainstorming, planning and designing our project. She always had a tactful way of providing very helpful advice, especially when we might otherwise have made impractical or costly decisions regarding our project. Her vast experience with New Mexico landscapes, and her personal touch, made the entire experience a very pleasurable one. She even went the extra mile, sitting down with us to help us pick out appropriate outdoor furniture from another company. As we write this review, we are outside on our new portico enjoying the beautiful plants, flowers and fountain of our new backyard landscape.

> and they have been doing a nice job of maintaining our common areas.
> I appreciate what they have done for us over the years.

**★★★★★ — Jan Johnson, Oct. 2019**

> I hired Clemens & Associates to remodel my outdated courtyard. They were able to reconfigure the area and place plantings that are so wonderful. They were respectful of my occasional input and were always available to answer any questions I had. I couldn't be happier with the end result! They have been able to also update my drip system, add landscape lighting and help with general maintenance.

**★★★★★ — Mark Hickman, Oct. 2019**

> Project: flagstone patio enlargement with a pergola.
> We loved Catherine and Jess. Their design sense matched ours. Catherine knew just how to translate our ideas into a project that was just right. We knew clearly what we were getting , when it would be completed and at what price. All went according to plan.

**★★★★★ — Sandy Peinado, Oct. 2019**

> My experience with Catherinne Clemens and her crew has been great. She is a pleasure to work with. And her maintenance crew are very nice, accommodating people. I highly recommend her.

**★★★★★ — Clair Eastwood, Aug. 2019**

> After a frustrating experience with a landscape designer who failed to communicate and follow through time after time, I made s great decision to hire Clemons Landscape for maintenance and redesign of our new and existing gardens.
>
> Their maintenance is thorough and timely. When leaks occur, they are here the same day to repair. Scheduling is reliable and design assistance has had beautiful results.
>
> I could not be happier with their professional service.

**★★★★★ — Ann Marie Koshuta, June 2019**

> My husband and I were very pleased with Clemens and Associates. Catherine has great eye for overall spatial relationships as well as a deep knowledge of plants. She listened carefully to the feeling I wanted(never hesitated to let me know when something didn’t work) and reviewed all my tear sheets. She gave us the natural, low water, native landscape we were after, which perfectly complements out more contemporary looking house. She was also instrumental in working with my husband on the function and design of drainage through our property. I would highly recommend this firm.

> JWe own a historic casita in the historic district and have gorgeous private landscaped gardens surrounding it. We have been using Clemens for six or seven years and are exceptionally pleased with the beautiful condition of our yard throughout the year. We are absentee owners and do not need to direct or oversee them or their maintenance crew at all. We don’t stay there any longer and rent it as a vacation rental only. Without exception, our guests absolutely rave about our landscaping. They keep it in perfect shape at all times. We love the place but bought a larger house just up Garcia Street and come to Santa Fe four or more times per year and check on the casita. It is always perfect. Thank you Kristin, Katherine, Catherine, Brendan and our regular maintenance crew. You are doing a wonderful job!

> We’ve tried a couple different landscapers and yard maintenance companies since being in Santa Fe. Clemens and Associates has by far been the best. Their customer service is so fast and friendly via phone and email. They’re affordable - competitive with everyone else’s prices. And their team does great work. They totally revamped our yard. The maintenance crew is always polite and friendly and do great work!

**★★★★★ — albontrager, Sept. 2015**

> Worked with them since 2010. Always performed what we asked them to do. Gave insights of what would do better in our plantings. Very knowledgeable and professional. If there were any problems, always came back and took care of them. We would recommend them highly.

**★★★★★ — bbbb48, Sept. 2015**

> This hardscape project was completed in an efficient manner, the crew was terrific, respectful of our property, and went above and beyond expectations. The crew ensured the work was as pleasing to the eye as possible, which was especially appreciated since we did not have a formal design due to the scale of the project. The crew interacted with us daily which facilitated the satisfaction of the work, as any issues were addressed real time. Jes was always reachable for any discussion needed, and his ideas were always welcome. We recommend this firm and would definitely hire again.

**★★★★★ — tbcstox, July 2015**

> Clemens & Associates recently improved our backyard by installing flagstone patio surfaces and pathways to replace an unfortunate expanse of gravel we inherited when we bought the house. I got the idea for a flagstone surface earlier in the summer and got a couple of bids. Jess Clemens made a great impression when he arrived with several flagstone samples and quickly came up with a detailed proposal including several suggestions that improved enormously on my original concept. My wife and I agreed on nearly everything he proposed. The crew that performed the work was great. They met or exceeded every expectation we had for the job and were a very positive presence around our house for the week or so they were here. In addition to installing the patio the workers took it on themselves to patch up a few things like stones that had gotten out of line on garden borders. They also made some good suggestions on dealing with trees and some other things beyond the scope of the stone work - I followed up on things they noted and they were correct in each instance. The end result was fabulous. Full marks for Jess, his foreman, Marco, and the rest of the crew. I should add that in the space below I checked off a project cost of $10,000 - $49,999, which is quite a wide spread. It was far closer to the lower number.

**★★★★★ — Margaret Beacham, July 2015**

> Our landscaping and hardscape was disjointed . We needed a cohesive plan for the gardens and outside entertaining . Clemens came up with a design that exceeded our expectations . They checked and rechecked details and progress on site regularly . We were consulted throughout .

**★★★★★ — elliedolg, June 2015**

> I can't say enough great things about Catherine and her staff. I interviewed four companies for this project and her design was the most original and dealt with my needs and vision more than anyone. She was clear, experienced, efficient and both Catherine and her staff were a pleasure to work with. I hung around the house for two weeks to be available to answer questions but Marco, the manager, followed her plans with care and precision and never had to ask me a question! He was respectful, kind and knowledgeable. I would recommend Clemens for any landscaping work.

**★★★★★ — John Haupert, Feb. 2015**

> Rather than jumping right into the superior and extraordinary job that Clemens & Associates executed under Catherine Clemens vision and execution, I'd like to take a moment and start at the very beginning.
>
> We purchased a Spanish Colonial Hacienda in Santa Fe, NM that we spent the first year working on with our general contractor and designer restoring back to a more original feel and as we neared completion of that part of the journey, we knew what was coming next. The Great Outdoors that surrounded this incredible property. The Hacienda sits on 5 acres of land and came with multiple outdoor spaces that needed dire help ---- but little did we know there were other areas that would get created along this glorious outdoor journey.
>
> We went about researching companies to work with and started with interviews on site ........when Catherine entered the picture, it was as it was all supposed to be --- this was the person that was going to see this project through to the end and transform the outside to mirror what had been created on the inside of the Hacienda over this previous year period. Catherine knew and literally said all the things that we had either imagined or wished we had imagined for the property and thus the relationship was sealed.
>
> Catherine was meticulous about surveying the property, the grounds, the details, the technicalities along with remaining true to the bigger picture and what it would take to execute the vision. Catherine was so helpful with us in mapping out each phase of the project and providing ideas, thoughts and designs that would then transform the various areas into this spectacular landscape we now know today as our Hacienda.
>
> Projects included; i.e. the drive and entryway up to the house (total re-do), the front courtyard area (total re-do), a fire-pit & star-gazer areas (newly developed area), the guest room Moroccan Garden area (newly developed area), the Master Bedroom Bird Sanctuary (total re-do that would almost qualify as a completely new project) and finally, the interior courtyard & cocktail pool area (major re-do).
>
> Each of the spaces required their own unique level of detail.......for example, the newly installed pathway of driving lights leading up to the house from the main entrance were an area of great concentration for Catherine. She wanted to achieve the perfect balance of luminescence --- not too bright, not too dim but just right. She went as far as hand painting the interior glass to soften the light and achieve the most beautiful atmosphere in which to meander up to our front door while creating a beautiful feel of anticipation on what to expect along the way.
>
> The front courtyard and landing pad off of the drive had been a previously laid pattern of brick pavers that provided function and restricted space -- blocked along very linear lines -- and included absolutely no beauty or expanded entertainment function and Catherine proposed a layout of tumbled brick laid in the most beautiful pattern ---- and at the same time, expanded the brick into unused areas of the front courtyard so that it literally transformed the space into an inviting and entertaining space that simply calls to be used. She rebuilt our front courtyard fountain and base by hand so that it mirrored the stye of the space and made it visually more interesting than just another typical flowing fountain. Catherine's choice of colors and style to recreate this space was beautiful.
>
> The Guest Room Courtyard and Moroccan Garden off of the media room were another transformation -- our guests now enjoy a seamless and inviting path to the most gorgeous pergola covered water treatment garden area that is tranquil, meditative and relaxing. No offense Catherine, but our goal wasn't to have our guests move in and never check out !!! LOL !!! Thanks for creating such a special place that provides our guests a moment to remember.
>
> The bird garden / sanctuary is one of my personal favorites.......it's magical. The stair steps into the area that houses a full variety of feeders and food types along with natural tree limbs and stumps surrounding a heated water pool for drinking and hanging out.
>
> Then finally our interior courtyard and pool went through a complete overhaul.....from a complete redesign and renovation of the pool, including hand painted mosaic tiles, to a complete redesign of the inner courtyard where the 2-tier difficult-to-navigate courtyard was transformed into a one level tumbled brick beautiful entertaining area that now houses gorgeous pots, plants and furniture.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Beautiful Retreat!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell us what color/brand the orange stucco wall has been painted? Thank you

A: Thank you Melissa!
This was a Sto Stucco color. i wouldn't know the number this many years later, but if you go to any Paint store and select a swatch you like, Chaparral Building Supply in Santa Fe can mix it for you. i would recommend that it be professionally applied. it is a stucco not a paint. Note that the red stucco colors will fade over tie and turn more pink particularly when facing the sun.
Good luck!
Catherine

**Q: What brick was used here?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love what you did here. Amazing...

A: Hi Rick,
This is actually my front courtyard. Unfortunately,
the bricks were existing when I moved in, but are certainly a mix of
brick the previous series of owners had put in, Part of the house was
built in 1890, so it has a long history! Many are crumbling and will
need to be replaced when they get too bad. For now I chalk it up to
character!
When I want brick for a job that looks old, I purchase
brick that had been "tumbled". That softens the edges such as seen in
the Moorish Inspired Courtyard. If your local supplier caries a
"flash blend" that will add some variety to the color much more like you
see in my brick. Some brick suppliers can even ass a lime slurry to the
tumbling process to give it a white washed look.My supplier is Kinney Brick in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

**Q: Plan** *(in Photo Questions)*

I need to know the plan of this photo

A: I'm sorry I don't understand your question.

**Q: Is the pool surround concrete? If so how was look achieved?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Georgann,
the paved surface material is indeed concrete. it was stamped, scored and acid etched with a concrete stain. it was done by a professional, but there may be kits that allow a home owner to do it. it is a tricky process. it should be sealed afterwards to protect it and bring out the color.
best of luck!
Catherine

**Q: Which company is the wall cap from? Thanks!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: thanks for asking! it is sandstone flagstone from Arizona cut to the length and width necessary. Many stone yards can bring this material in.

**Q: My secret garden!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Lucky lucky homeowners! What can you share about the scrollwork umbrella?

A: The umbrella was purchased from Hedge Row Studio. The have really beautiful and unique patio umbrellas. Their website is: hedgerowstudio.com
