**Q: My bedroom project** *(in Before & After)*

So this is my little bedroom remodeling I was working on. Maybe a little bit of background informations about myself and the starting situation: I am still a student living in Switzerland, so my budget was very limited. As I love to get inspired by many interior projects and I loved to look trough all those Before & After projects I decided to write about mine as well.

So this was my bedroom before I started to rearrangement.

I actually already started to redesign it when I bought my first Full sized bed one year beforehand. I am sorry about the mess. I wasn't planning on posting my project at that time so they were basically just some random photos I took of my room. I used a wide angle lens, that's why the place looks quite narrow but in fact it isn't.

The change
My primary goal was to get more free space while increasing the space for storage. I also wanted to gain a tidy, simple and bright atmosphere throughout the whole room. I started off by rearranging the furnitures. 

This was my first attempt. I moved the bed to the other side just to see what it does to the room. I knew I would have to replace some of the furnitures with some more simple and practical ones in order to be able to get more free space and that desired atmosphere. 
I loved the free space I gained after I sold my old, bulky desk. A problem was the black USM shelf, which is a lovely piece of design but it was just not suitable for what I have planned. I replaced both the shelf with a simple, white IKEA shelf, which wasn't used by my family anymore and the desk with another beautiful IKEA desk. The result was very satisfactorily. 
Another change were the walls. I had one wall painted in yellow before which I didn't like anymore. I decided to paint both walls in a light grey. 
So before I bore you with all my changes I want to skip right to the result ;-)

The result
So at that point I will show you the results of many hours remodeling and replacing. I didn't cover all of the changes in my description because it would simply be too much but if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I am also very happy about any advices as I am still learning.
Oh and sorry about my English. It's not my first language.

A: Yannick, I like what you have chosen so far for this small multi function room.  I read that you are considering wood shutters or blinds for that off size window.  May I suggest 2 alternatives to disguise the window's size? 1. run a drapery completely across that wall and open from the left.  It could be just below sill length or full length if your budget permits.  2. purchase an IKEA hutch to sit on the double door chest, set it in the space to the right of the window for balance. If you chose to do the latter, I would buy wood blinds to match the window trim, they are much less expensive than shutters and if you get the routless type they look just like shutters.  Position your desk below the window.  Having the hutch will give you vertical storage for books, music, souvenirs etc. and improve the look of the room by bringing your eyes up.  Right now everything is at the same horizontal level. If you can, float your bed in the center of the room with the night table to the right it will break up the long axis which seems to be a problem. Use the entry door wall for the chest with TV.   A carpet runner the length of the bed will give you something to put your feet on instead of the cold floor.

**Q: What color should I paint the front door?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Not crazy about this orangey/red color.  This is my first home. I want it to look fresh and young

A: I like blue too and also yellow for this color house.

**Q: Starting Fresh** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I just moved into my home last month. I decided I wanted a new look so all I brought with me for my living room was the sofa, tv, and stand. Now I am at a loss! I don't know where to start nor do I know how to color coordinate. I love very bright and bold colors along with uncommon/unique decor. I also like bright purples or blue mixed with white.  I want to keep the walls white and the tv stand will be gone once I get around to mounting it. Any suggestions would be so helpful!

A: Hi, I just realized that the photos of the 4 rooms, are ones you picked.  All very different in feel, but all eclectic.  Not one of them has a sectional sofa, the reason is that sectionals have to be sized to the room they will be in.  What I see is that you like pops of what I call "raspberry" or fushia with lots of white, except for the upper left, and I will bet that what attracted you is the coffee table and the other saturated colors.  That color also goes very well with a navy blue and we are seeing it with orange too.   
 I want to talk to you about your floor plan.  Can you move the TV to the wall perpendicular to the window?  If so, I would break up the sectional taking the chaise into the window alcove, and move the rest of it to the wall where the TV is now.  As it is you are not able to take advantage of any view and the light from the window will be a problem for viewing the TV. 

I would find a rug to anchor the space and I would add fabric to the windows either drapes that can be drawn, or roman shades that can be lowered.  Add pillows and repeat the fabric from the window treatment in the pillows by combining them with solids.  Add side tables that can hold a lamp at least 2 and a stand alone lamp and small table to hold a drink or dish.  I don't know what the opening in the one wall is, if you could have that wall rmoved and make it just a large opening it would look much better and give you a lot more space.   I just did this for a client and it made a world of difference in how the room felt. Of course the tile floor is a problem with that, so it might be better to just enlarge the opening, better yet have a plasterer fill it in then you have a useable wall. 

I am not advising a big coffee table because I think it might become a barrier in this open space that is also a pass through to other areas of the apartment.

**Q: Backyard Patio needs inspiration!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We need some inspiration for our back patio.  We have a table, 4 chairs, and a gas fire pit.  We also have an offset umbrella to provide some shade. (It's not in the picture)  I was thinking some kind of lounge chairs, maybe something to lie on.  i am looking for any suggestions just in case there is something I might not think of!

A: How about a pergola over the eating area with some vines. A covered area for the grill and some extra seating around the firepit. Some trees that will grow up and provide natural shade and if you put 2 about 12 feet apart eventually a place for a hammock.  I would have the people who designed the patio come back and put a sitting wall near the fire pit.  Then a planting bed along the edge.

**Q: Hate my new backsplash! Cost $$$$!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just installed today and I am so worried it's too busy with the counter!

A: Let it stay for a few days.  Your eyes have to adjust to the change.  I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

**Q: Need help picking rug** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Im in a rural area and can't seem to find a rug that I like. I would like to use a designer but in my area they seem to be heavy Texas traditional or crazy expensive out of Dallas. I know what I like when it comes to furniture but can't seem to make up my mind with the small details. I need something to break up the beige carpet.

A: I would do a nice stripe or geometric and also buy the proper pad for going between a rug and carpet.  The rug should be tightly woven and not thick or plush.
