Most remodeling projects are driven by changing needs. I help clients design the homes they need for the lives they are creating. Using my Next Step Home Design Process, we discover opportunities to reinvent your home to support your family’s evolving needs at each life phase; from young families wanting a family room or education space, empty nesters with some underutilized rooms to repurpose, or strategies for Aging in Place with purpose and creativity. Healthy Home and Climate Conscious practices are built into the fabric of my projects.

The process begins with a free phone consultation. If we think we are a good fit, we schedule a Next Step Discovery Review to identify and prioritize your needs and options. At the end of a first meeting, I prepare an action plan to identify the most relevant steps to proceed with confidence.

Colin Healy Design has been designing home transformations in Southern Connecticut for over 25 years. I take projects from the initial idea formation through construction drawings and bid negotiations and provide support and guidance through construction.

**★★★★★ — Ann Datunashvili, Nov. 2019**

> We have met Colin almost a decade ago and have been collaborating with him since. With his help we finished our basement, eking out every usable inch from the space while keeping it very attractive and functional. Colin also helped with guest bath remodel and front porch/walkway/yard redesign so that our curb appeal improved considerably while we gained great views of the property and great sitting area. Next up is master bathroom and kitchen/laundry room. We find Colin personable and honest; he is a good listener and punctual. He introduced us to our contractor and roofer and we found his advise valuable. Recommend him highly.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Ann, Thanks again for this review. It has been a great pleasure to collaborate with you to transform your spaces and make your home fit your vision.

**★★★★★ — John Halleran, June 2026**

> We didn't hire Colin for our modest garage remodel because he told us not to. At least not until we'd first spoken with our local buidling department to see what was required. He listened to what we had in mind, gave us great counsel, and proved that their are decent trustworthy folks still living among us. When we decide to renovate our home, or if asked for a recommendation, Colin would be my first call. Maybe after the building department.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> John, Thanks for your kind words. Once you shared some pictures of your garage and we discussed your project goals, I quickly assessed that you had the skills to draw a simple plan that the building department was likely to accept for adding an overhead door. I'm glad it worked out!

**★★★★★ — HU-399959090, March 2022**

> Colin combines the amazing qualities of creativity, problem solving, and personality. He began our journey by generously listening to our wants and needs. He then offered expert strategies that reflected our story and the architecture of our house so that any remodeling had integrity to the original design. He was thorough, always available, and patient. He was up on current materials that offered green techniques which we were committed to. He always brought humility and knowledge to our interactions. He is truly a gem!!

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Thank you so much. Even a small project can be a complex journey whhen deaaaluubng with old houses. A first meeting is about getting clarity on your goals and assessing needs and options. I'm glad I was able to help.

**★★★★★ — Regina Eum, Dec. 2020**

> Working with Colin Healy is a pleasure and a privilege. We asked him to design changes to make our first floor wheelchair accessible, create an accessible first floor bathroom and to renovate our second floor bathroom. His experience and thoroughness in thinking through the changes needed to accomplish our goals have been both impressive and reassuring. He is a fantastic educator and counselor with regard to all building-related matters. After taking his recommendations into account, we pulled out of our initial offer on a house and found one that was a much better fit. We then worked with him to hammer out the architectural changes we would need. Whenever I had a question about the building, he was willing to take a look and make recommendations about the structure. He also helped guide our aesthetic choices and prevented us from making some mistakes that I know I would have regretted later. His professionalism and communication skills are top-notch, which make working with him a joy. He cares deeply about his work, and he makes sure that things go well. When you work with him, you know that you’ll love the home you’re living in and be able to sell it later.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Thank you Regina and Dave. It was a pleasure working with you too. Your foresight in creating accessible spaces for your Mom for when they would become necessary guided the project. This included enlarging the hallway from the garage to the kitchen and preparing all the hookups for a future vertical lift that will make it easy and quick to order and install when needed.

**★★★★★ — Suzanne Mount, Nov. 2020**

> Colin has the right combination of knowledge, experience, and wisdom. His designs are beautiful. I wouldn't plan a project without him.

**★★★★★ — char32, July 2020**

> Two thumbs up for Colin. Very responsive and committed to his customers! Full range of services - from in-law apartments to full renovations.

**★★★★★ — Sherrylee Dickinson, Jan. 2018**

> Colin Healy has done a number of projects for us from small to large. We have known Colin for 30+ years personally and professionally and find him flexible and easy to work with. His ability to hear what is needed and respond appropriately is a quality that he has and that we look for when working with someone. If we changed our minds or needed to go in a different direction Colin was right there with us, guiding us and offering suggestions. We had different budget needs depending on the various projects and Colin was always able to meet our goals. We recommend him with the highest regard.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> I have always enjoyed supporting your creative projects at the house. One of my favorite projects was creating alternative designs for the "kitchen in the basement' problem that was making your Dad's house hard to sell.

**★★★★★ — Stanley Dalnekoff, Dec. 2017**

> Very easy and pleasant to work with. Excellent and intuitive understanding of our needs. We would be more than happy to recommend his services.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Thanks Stanley,
> It was fun designing new wood cabinets to match the details and color of your 1950's steel cabinets (which are no longer easily available) to make a new configuration. Happy New Year in your new home

**★★★★★ — George Kleinman, Sept. 2017**

> Colin designed several projects for our residence; 1) incorporation of a porch into a small family room to make a great room; a large deck, and most challenging of all enclosing and enlarging a stoop to make a large, formal entry. The challenge was that the front door was located in the corner of an "L" and the proportioning of the roof to harmonize with the pre-existing structure required a keen esthetic sense

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Thank you George, I have enjoyed all the projects we have done together over the years. You helped me to deepen my appreciation for Japanese architecture. It has been a pleasure to incorporate those elements into the designs for your home.

**★★★★★ — Mona Breiner, Aug. 2017**

> It was a pleasure to work with Colin. He was meticulous in his plans as well as creative in solving challenges to our kitchen and family room project. We had an older good-bones house with a very dated kitchen and family room. We wanted to integrate a more modern look to attract today’s buyers. In a very down market, we were one of the few houses in our neighborhood to display a Sold Sign.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Thank you Mona, You and Mark were very engaged and gave me good feedback at our meetings to guide my design efforts. A good collaboration.

**★★★★★ — Maung Maung Soe Min, July 2017**

> Colin is highly knowledgeable and managed to set up a plan within my budget. I have no problem to recommend him for renovation and/or new construction.

**★★★★★ — Martha Constable, June 2017**

> I wanted to replace an outdated and design-inappropriate solarium window bump-out, and add a new portico to the front of my 1930's house in a historic district. Colin took great interest and care in creating a solution that worked within the existing footprint, and blended beautifully with the rest of the house facade. He also suggested a few smaller exterior details, such as working window shutters with historically appropriate hardware. I am thrilled with the results, inside and out, and so are my neighbors! Colin was a pleasure to work with.

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Here is the finished transformation on an Historic District home from overheated greenhouse bump-out to comfortable Colonial Revival dining room extension.

**★★★★★ — Joseph Tramuta, Jan. 2017**

> Colin is very knowledgeable and insightful. He brought many good ideas to fruition in our project. Colin is very professional and I highly recommend him.

**★★★★★ — Pondview Inspections, LLC, May 2016**

> Colin Healy impressed me right away. He not only helps you to plan and design your project but he gets a complete understanding about the way you plan on using the space. With this information he helps to plan for the future as well as the present. By planning the space in such a way to accommodate the future needs of the space it saves time and money as your life changes. Many designers only design for the moment, but Colin helps to expand your vision. Not to mention his designs are impeccable. I do not hesitate to recommend him for his home design skills.

**★★★★★ — fft353, May 2016**

> Colin is very confident and capable of handling small and large projects. We have been discussing the addition of a half bathroom. Colin provided good insight into what can be done to better utilize the available space without any major modifications to the structure. We look forward to working with Colin in the near future.

**★★★★★ — tuckkan, May 2016**

> Our laundry room project had hit a difficult point where we were unable to move forward with any confidence. Colin is extraordinarily able to make his vision appear on paper - to show us the possibilities he saw to transform a blank space into the beautiful, functional room we desired. We were able to use his drawings to guide our choices and move to completion.

**★★★★★ — rassowb, May 2016**

> My husband and I were in the middle of a project of adding a mudroom, powder-room and laundry room to our existing home, when we ran into problems with the layout and cabinetry design of the laundry room. We wanted the room to be a beautiful and easily workable space to do laundry and sewing and also serve as a storage area for housecleaning supplies and tools. It was a challenge fitting all those needs into one room. Previous to Colin, we had consulted with 3 decorators and 2 contractors, none of whom came up with a satisfying solution for us. We invited Colin Healy over to look at our "problem area." He was very attentive and patient in listening to our needs and vision. Then right there on the spot he drew a design that worked!! The room was built to his specs and now, thanks to Colin, we have the laundry room of my dreams. I will take some pics in a future date and include in this review.
> Thank you , Colin!

**Comment from Colin Healy Design LLC:**

> Barbara, Thanks so much for the nice comments. You had some great instincts about what you wanted to do with the room that were easy to translate. I love the antique sewing machine that you still use. My grandfather worked for Singer and my Mom had one a lot like it. I like the way you hide it under the counter when not in use. The big work table is great for crafts and folding.

**★★★★★ — David Swanson, Sept. 2015**

> Colin came over to look at a re-design of two bathrooms and a master closet project for Kathy and I.
>
> He was prompt for our meeting, confirming the appointment the day before.
>
> Colin asked a lot of questions and built an initial plan based on those answers.
>
> We found Colin, interesting, respectful, and artistic.
>
> We will be using Colin Healy Design as we go forward with our project.
>
> David Swanson

**★★★★★ — Stephanie Rapp Interiors, LLC, Sept. 2015**

> Colin is a highly experienced home designer, having worked on many large high-end residential, as well as commercial projects.
> His planning to determine space usage is very thorough and thoughtful for daily living and future eventualities. Colin is also very hands-on in managing his projects.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Ductless Heat Pumps** *(in Photo Questions)*

Ductless heat pumps, also called mini-split heat pumps or mini-splits, work by blowing the heated or cooled air directly into the room. These systems are better for heating smaller spaces, since they aren’t able to push the air throughout the home. Minisplitwarehouse.com

A: This system was able to help heat and cool the extra space of the kitchen extension.

**Q: Could you please share the tile information? (Make, color?) Thanks.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the green backsplash

A: The tile came from Tile America in Fairfield. United States Ceramic Tile. Photo too grainy to read. I hope this helps.

**Q: What type of siding is this and color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The color is dove gray over cedar clapboards

**Q: color number?** *(in Photo Questions)*

what is the color number?
