> I am happy to write this review and give my highest recommendation to John Hill Construction. I worked with John and his staff over a 12-month period when we completely renovated our house and added a second story. John was our contractor for the entire project and I cannot say enough positive things about the quality of his company’s work, the professionalism they exhibited, and the great communication we maintained throughout the process.
>
> Before we started our renovation, everyone we knew had advice to give about how difficult the process can be, and how many problems they had with their contractors. It usually involved taking longer than expected, charging above original estimations, poor communication about desired outcomes, or poor work quality. I can 100% honestly say that none of these were an issue with John. He always came in under estimated costs, under estimated time frames, and communicated with us extremely well on every step. Having now gone through this, I can see how so many things go wrong if we didn’t have very clear communication between us to have the things turn out the way we wanted. We had a number of problems, but they primarily came from manufacturers discontinuing items, or the city permit process being convoluted. John actually solved the majority of these problems and then brought them to us after they were taken care of. In a particularly scary incident, then city wasn’t going to approve of our second story after they had signed off because they didn’t catch something the first time. John spent a good chunk of the day arguing with them until the relented and we got the permits signed off. He really went to bat to make sure they took responsibility and avoided an expensive problem.
>
> Keep in mind that when getting an estimation for a project, he will give the higher end to avoid charging more than promised. This means that you may find other people who will quote less for a job, but you run the risk of it coming in higher down the road. John was so true to his word, that when he forgot to account for windows in our second story addition, he ate the costs of the windows and the labor because it wasn’t included in the original estimation. That is the highest level of professionalism.
>
> Most importantly, John and his primary staff (Tony and Greg) really do beautiful work. They are craftsmen and were able to do anything we asked and at the highest quality. Also, the sub-contractors were also very good and professional. We moved out for a majority of the project, but spent a lot of time with Tony and Greg. They are great guys, and enjoyed hanging out with them while they worked. John also has a great sense of humor which is a great asset when dealing with something as stressful as a complete home renovation.
>
> In summary, do not waste your time with anyone else. If you get a chance to use John Hill for your work, then don’t pass it up. I will never use anyone else in the future as I had such a positive experience with John and his staff over the 12-month period. We hopefully will get pics up soon to show off the quality of his work.

> J. Hill Construction did a powder room remodel and complete kitchen remodel for me including floors, walls, ceiling, plumbing fixtures, appliances, cabinets, lighting & electrical, countertops and construction of a banquette. John Hill and his crew were very accessible and easy to communicate with. What impressed me most was their attention to detail and taking the time and effort to "do things right." Any variances from original plans or budgets were discussed before additional work was done. Their experience working on previous projects with/for my kitchen designer was an added plus as they were familiar with, and had an strong understanding of, her plans and preferences.

> My husband and I made the best decision when we hired John Hill to completely remodel our 20 year old kitchen! Our new kitchen is incredible and one year later, we still marvel at how gorgeous it is and how John Hill made the process easy and exciting for us.
> John gutted our kitchen to cement slab, and slowly transformed it into a designer white showcase!
> John's staff were complete professionals, prompt everyday, always in communication, and even offered suggestions to improve the design or quality of the kitchen as they proceeded. The smallest details, from light/outlet placement, to dealing with major structural issues like uneven window frames.
> John has a great working relationship with our kitchen designer, and they were in touch throughout the process, making necessary modifications that John noticed during the remodel. His subs worked well together and spoke highly of John. He even had a family health emergency during our remodel and the job did not pause for a moment. John knew that we had family coming to visit, before the original deadline, and he was able to finish AHEAD of their arrival. We definitely WILL use John Hill Construction again.

> J. Hill Construction completed a master bath and bedroom remodel of our 23-year old house. John and his team did an excellent job, and we would hire him again in a heartbeat! When our initial design exceeded our budget, John worked with us to revise the scope while still accomplishing our objectives. (And he completed the job within budget.). John has a great attitude and is very easy to get along with; he and his team were always polite and considerate. We had no qualms about going on vacation while they were working in our house. He also worked well with his subcontractors (plumbing, tile, electrical, etc.), who were all excellent and went the extra mile to make sure we were satisfied. John has an eye for detail and a designer's sensibility, and his input was particularly helpful on the design of a glass pocket door and placement of tub fixtures.

> We used John Hill to transform our very dated and nondescript 1984, 1200 square foot home, into a 2-story, 3300 square foot Craftsman style masterpiece! He exceeded our expectations on so many levels. Every guest to our home remarks on its warmth, its beauty and the quality of the craftsmanship. John paid special attention to the design details of the house, to ensure it would stay true to the period look. Although our project was massive, John was able to keep the project on budget and was able to complete the project in the estimated time frame. John was an excellent communicator, not only with us, but with all of the sub-contractors and other members of the design team.
> We could give many examples of John's excellent workmanship. However, due to space constraints, we will provide just this one. Because the house style was Craftsman, there was a lot of wood used in the interior. However, all of the wood was not the same. We used Anderson Wood Windows (pine wood), cherry wood baseboards, cherry wood trim around the windows, doors and walls, and fir interior doors. All of these different woods needed to be stained so that they would look to be the exact same color....cherry. This is not easy! Each of the different woods required a different type of stain. It took John several days to test and re-test samples of each of the different woods to get it, in the words of Goldilocks, "just right."
> If you are looking for someone who: can perform quality workmanship; pays close attention to detail, will listen to your list of wants and needs and be able to transform these into EXACTLY what you desire, then John Hill is the perfect person for you!

> Being diagnosed with a chronic condition that would leave me in & out of a wheelchair the rest of my life, I had 2 choices-move or remodel. I love my location in Davis so a whole house remodel was the most practical choice. John Hill was honest from the start and I never felt a sales pressure. He not only helped me with ADA information I needed to know but he also made sure my home would be gorgeous AND practical. He made sure I looked to the future and I now take great pleasure in knowing I can retire and stay in this beautiful and comfortable home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Fireplace** *(in Photo Questions)*

I purchased a new home in Orlando in a gated golf community with homers ranging 400-900K I want to put in a fireplace and there is no obvious gas line in the development so I am thinking of a Linear Electric Fireplace ( $1500-2K) and recessing it/stone wall etc. and it would look almost like it was a gas fireplace. Your thoughts? My understanding to try and go gas route and see if I can put in a gas line etc and purchase gas fireplace - all that could be 20K+ . Anyone have any insight into this or an opinion? I an not sure what to do?

A: I have not had any experience with the electric fireplaces, so I'm afraid I will be of no help on that. If you can do a 42" linear gas fireplace depending on the accessories, including installation it will cost approximately $3K - $5K. Without knowing anything about your home I cannot estimate the total costs to install that unit. Best of luck to you!

**Q: What is the manufacturer and name of the floor tile?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The tile is from Dal Tile, it's made by Concrete Connections

**Q: Stunning Room! Where can I buy that rug?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thank you! I don't know, the homeowner purchased the rug after we completed the project.

**Q: Height of fireplace and finishing material around the fireplace** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the fireplace wall... What material was used around the fireplace to achieve this look? Want to be able to just have a painted wall, like you have beautifully done here. Also at what height is the fireplace (i.e. top edge of the glass). Thanks!

A: The wall is sheetrock around the fireplace. I do not have any notes on how high the fireplace is, if I had to guess I would say that the top of the glass is about 36" to 38".

**Q: Grout** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you know the grout color used?

A: It was Custom brand "Snow White"

**Q: Colour on the walls?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the colour on the walls?

A: I believe the paint is from Sherwin-Williams and the color is "Tony Taupe"
