> We hired Nina to design our dream home. She was easy to work with and was open to our input. Nina took our ideas and layout and turned them into a nice flowing open floor plan with little wasted space. Adding touches that enhanced our concepts and took them to a higher level. The exterior is beautiful and interesting with a very complicated roof line (our fault, didn't want to live in a box). Nina was able to make this roof line work. She had great ideas and input that added to our vision. We had no concept of the 2nd floor or how to lay this out. We love the end result. The cart garage and entry through the pantry is one my favorite ideas she had. The deck spaces are functional and large with interesting features and nice spaces. The end result is more than we imagined. We love, love, love our home. Thanks Nina!

> Nina was so easy to work with. I gave her a broad idea of what I wanted, then we worked together to refine it to what I really needed. I now have a beautiful addition to our home and am so happy with the design. I would work with her again if I get the opportunity.

> I hired Nina at Island Architecture for a much needed home remodel project. Nina met with me several times to go over ideas for updating the kitchen and master bathroom as well as finishes throughout the main level of the house. Not only did the kitchen have a poor flow, it was very outdated. Her redesign of the kitchen provides a much better flow for cooking and entertaining. It truly is a work of art. The master bathroom needed a lot of work. The updated design is a dream! I found Nina to be very helpful, efficient and knowledgeable. Her design turned out beautifully. I am very happy with the work Nina did on my house. I highly recommend her. Thank you for your Nina!

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thank you so very much for such a great review Karen! I am so happy to have been able to help you improve the livability of your home!

**★★★★★ — Steve Lloyd, Jan. 2024**

> The kitchen in our 2008 house never worked well. It was not small, but the layout of the appliances, cabinets and work spaces were poorly planned and inefficient. It lacked natural light, and the over-use of cherry on the floors and cabinets, coupled with dark granite countertops, made the kitchen read as gloomy and uninviting.
>
> We researched and selected a respected local contractor to do the remodel, and found an experienced custom shop for the cabinets. What stopped us from moving ahead was that nobody could come up with a plan to resolve the awkward layout of appliances, work spaces, and overall aesthetics of the kitchen we dreamed of.
>
> Our contractor recommended Nina Le Baron and her firm, Island Architecture. From our very first meeting, it was clear that Nina could see ways to resolve the problems that seemed intractable to other designers we had spoken to. She designed a new layout that kept the (few) things we liked about the old kitchen, but magically fixed every other issue that made us frustrated whenever we cooked or entertained.
>
> Nina approached the design challenges methodically, and very clearly communicated questions and choices for us to make before finalizing the plans and submitting them for project permitting. She recommended finishes for floors, cabinets, counters and wall surfaces, and became a valuable sounding board to help us make the best choices among seemingly endless options.
>
> In the end, we love, LOVE our new kitchen! All the frustrations of the old one have disappeared, and once again we are able to enjoy the experience of preparing creative meals and entertaining friends and family in this light, bright, artistic space. I wholeheartedly recommend Nina Le Baron and Island Architecture for kitchen, bathroom, and all types of remodeling and construction projects.

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thanks so very much Steve, for such a well thought out review that explains the process that you experienced. It was a pleasure working with you and Julie, throughout the project.

**★★★★★ — Patricia Benton, July 2021**

> We are working with Nina on a condo buidling remodel. Nina has been very responsive to our ever changing requests. She is quick at getting back to us and always follows-through. The most exciting experiences were the times on Zoom when we talked through our ideas and alterations to the plans and we watched Nina make the changes in real time -what an efficient and productive way to approach the task. Thank you Nina!

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thank you Patricia! Can't wait to see how it all turns out!

**★★★★★ — Diane Bouchard, June 2021**

> Once again Nina helped collect my ideas and put them into a cohesive plan, for a major overhaul of my primary bedroom, bath and dressing room. We had a wonderful collaborative zoom call where I could watch the plans evolve in real time! It was easy to make suggestions and have Nina tweak the plans. Nina has worked with my general contractor before, so she knew how to speak "his language". I am so happy with my kitchen remodel, I cannot wait to see how the bathroom turns out!

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thanks so very much Diane! Glad to be of service!

**★★★★★ — HU-310989210, Nov. 2020**

> Nina was great to work with she listened to our needs and was quick to respond to making changes. We are extremely happy with her work and how the remodel turned out.

**★★★★★ — Christie Mellor, March 2018**

> Nyna is so easy to work with and is such a professional. Held my hand through the whole process and was really helpful, every step of the way. We're just working on the first phase of building, and I'm looking forward to working with her on the main house as well. She listens to what I want, but if there are better options, she helpfully steers me toward them. It's been a very good collaboration, and she's great at what she does.

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thank you Christie! Building on an island is challenging and you made it happen on a budget and during a pandemic to boot....can't wait to see the Main house get built next!!!!

**★★★★★ — Diane Bouchard, March 2017**

> My contractor suggested we bring in Nina to help with the drawings for my kitchen remodel. I didn't think i needed an architect! but her ideas and insights into the design helped create a kitchen which far exceeded my expectations. I cannot wait to get her back to work on my master bath!

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thanks so very much Diane for telling your story!
> Many people don't think they need an architect and you are proof that we can make an un-expected difference for the positive:-)
> So glad that you are happy with the results- a more open kitchen with more storage. It is an inviting place to hang out now! Love your SMEG refrigerator in the cool light green!

**★★★★★ — robinkaukonen, Dec. 2015**

> Nina was a pleasure to work with. She was considerate, creative and cost-effective. Our kitchen remodel not only came in on budget and on-time, but far exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend Nina.

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thanks so very much Robin, for your time and thoughts on a much appreciated great review! So glad that you are so pleased with the results - it really transforms your house to re-do that central space that everyone uses everyday- enjoy with blessings.

**★★★★★ — Jon Van Wormer, Oct. 2015**

> Hired Island Architecture (Nina Le Baron) to complete a small complex project involving legalization of an Additional Dwelling Unit. She was timely and professional in the communication and completion of the project. I was very impressed with her results in dealing with the San Francisco Building Inspectors. She even saved us money on filing multiple permits at one time... I highly recommend her and her firm...

**Comment from Island Architecture:**

> Thanks so very much for your kind words Jon! I appreciate your business and look forward to working with you again in the future on another project.

**★★★★★ — Ellen Kutten, Aug. 2015**

> I have worked with Nina LeBaron on several home renovation projects over the
> years, and they have each been a positive experience. I highly recommend her
> architectural plan and drafting services and end product work.
>
> Nina is a true professional, very talented and creative. She will listen to
> your needs and desires and incorporate them fully in her work. I believe
> you will be happy with your remodel project results and fees provide an excellent value for
> the quality of work you will receive.

 - Description: This was a house built in 1945, that has only one original owner. When my client purchased it, nothing had been done to it. The kitchens and bathrooms had to go! It was a complete gut job- we tried to salvage the original redwood paneling and re-purpose it on the ceiling, but it splintered to pieces when it was removed....Fir takes its place. New siding was added to the front facade to give it definition with 2 colors of grey.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love the light fixture** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you share brand and style of light fixture? And where to buy it? Thanks.

A: Restoration Hardware?

**Q: What was the construction cost on the 1965 A-frame addition?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It was about $400/sq. ft., as everything had to be transported by private boat charter to an island that does not have public ferry service.

**Q: color of cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is it a stain or paint, what color?

A: It is a solid body stain.

**Q: Stone veneer** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love the fireplace stone veneer you used on this project. Might you tell me what it is?

A: I believe it was "Eldorado" or similar concrete cast veneer to look like real stone. The existing brick underneath was 1965 funky, so by using this veneer with the new roofing material and rainscreen cladding, it totally transformed the exterior!

**Q: Looks great! Can you tell me the color and brand of the windows?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The windows had to be ordered custom from a commercial storefront supplier that the contractor located up in Washington State. He got them to match the color of the La Cantina folding doors.

**Q: Ilove doors and windows, who is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: OOPS- I checked the specs on the doors and they were by "CANTINA"- so I corrected the post above.
