## Community Q&A

**Q: What is the best Ikea cabinet configuration for my kitchen?** *(in Kitchens)*

I got the draft plans back from IKD and it's what I asked for but now that I am able to see it I think it needs to be tweaked a bit.  The package includes 2 design changes and I want to get it right before I start the cabinet ordering process.
My cabinets are not very useful, are too dark, are difficult to keep clean, and a pretty cheap.  The drawers are very shallow and there are not many of them, the lower cabinets are deep, dark and difficult to access, and the the top shelves of the uppers are not reachable and some are completely empty.  We do cook often and eat most meals at the island so this is definitely a working kitchen.
This is how the kitchen looks today viewing it from the dining room. The flooring will be changed to be the same as in the unfinished dining room flooring.



As you can see we had to stop installing the floor in the dining room (current work-in-progress) when we decided that we should deal with the kitchen cabinets.



Here are the floor plan measurements.






My main concern right now are the window wall and the stove/fridge wall cabinets. The pantry cabinets and the island seem pretty workable and vastly improved over my current situation.
For the sink wall I think I need to have cabinets for glasses and cups where the shelves are. The dishwasher and sink are staying in that location so I want to be able to unload the dishwasher as easily as possible.  I don't need a recycling pull-out because we put all of our recycling directly into the pick-up bin. We also compost so the compost container just stays on the counter and we take it out when it gets full. I do need pull-out trash which is currently located to the left of the sink and that seems like a good location but I am not sure if it will fit in that location. Would it be better to have the trash pull-out under the sink?  




For the stove/fridge wall should I just do away with the uppers on either side of the hood?  I don't like the open shelving to the far right.  Would a corner cabinet to the right be better, open shelves on both sides of the hood, or a wall-mounted pot rack?  This wall has me stumped.






Here is a island and it's a vast improvement over my current island.






FWIW the cabinet fronts are just what I picked initially to get the cabinets configured and will mostly likely pick another combo.

A: Move fridge to pantry wall. Will take some reframing but looks like there's room. Make stove wall symmetrical (like Rabbitt Design's!)  Scoot island towards Dining Rm to fit MW base cabinet at an end.  Should now be room to keep a silverware drawer near DW (also shown in Rabbitt Design) and trash/compost.   Keep symmetry on clearance from either side of window frame.   The cabinet for dishes instead of the open shelves is very useful.  But if you decide to store in bases or in the island, than the open shelf might look nice for cook books or artwork or wall mounted TV...
