### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Julie Golden, April 2019**

> A major renovation is a long, expensive, and stressful process with many variables. DW Ricks Architects takes a start-to-finish approach, so we had a partner for the entire project. They are creative architects and are experienced with all aspects of the construction phase, which is invaluable when something comes up (and something will always come up!). We appreciated their professionalism, attention to detail, and guidance throughout every phase. We are very happy with our newly remade home and highly recommend DW Ricks Architects.

**★★★★★ — Gray Chinn, April 2019**

> We had a great experience with DW Ricks on a substantial multi-floor addition to our house in Arlington. David and Steven were very attentive to our needs, and we couldn’t be happier with the finished product. They explained in detail during the first meetings their approach and process so we could make an informed decision. They were great communicators throughout the process, providing expertise and options on construction and interior design of the space. We’ve had several friends remark on how well the old existing part of the house and the addition are blended together to be seamless — inside and out.

**★★★★★ — Phoenix Builders, Inc., Aug. 2017**

> We have served as the general contractor on numerous DW Ricks home remodel projects since 2009, and we could not endorse them more enthusiastically. David and Steven deliver creative designs coupled with a flair for color and material selections that mesh perfectly with their design. They are organized and pay attention to detail, so they do a great job foreseeing potential snags and heading them off before they become greater problems. Their projects tend to run smoothly, and the clients are always delighted with the end result. They are one of our favorite architects to work with.

**★★★★★ — Andy Weintraub, July 2017**

> DW Ricks-- beautiful renovation that was tailored to our needs and style- open concept with use of materials such as barn wood, marble and leathered granite.. DW Ricks helped us understand and manage every part of the process- initial concept, builder selection, detail design, construction oversight, close-out. Incredible attention to detail, amazing ideas (that we never thought could be in our house…)
>
> Regular walkthrough meetings with DW Ricks, builder and owner throughout the project--worked hand and hand with builder to come up with best solutions and ensure quality of the job.
>
> DW Ricks took the time to understand what we liked and then delivered it! We could not have asked for a better outcome and are so proud to show it off. We enjoy our new space every day!

**★★★★★ — Emily P., July 2017**

> We hired DW Ricks for a whole house renovation/addition. Our primary goals going into the project were to create an open concept kitchen/living area, add a master bedroom and bathroom, and add a front entrance portico. One of the things that was very important to us was that the renovation "fit" into the style of the neighborhood. Long story short, they exceeded our (very high) expectations. More importantly, David and Steven were a pleasure to work with. From the initial phase of providing multiple design options/drawings all the way through the final walk-through, they were with us every step of the way. One of the things that was most valuable for us was the fact that Steven acted as the project manager throughout the process, meeting with the builder and with us regularly and providing all of the follow-up notes and actions to keep the project on track. This was especially helpful given that we had a snafu in the middle of the project (due to contractor error, not DW Ricks) which could have set the project back substantially but with Steven's help, we were able to keep the project on track. Steven also pushed us to make decisions (lighting, fixtures, tile, etc.) in a timely manner (which was, admittedly, difficult for me at times!) which also really helped keep the project on track.
>
> While this was an expensive endeavor and DW Ricks may not be the cheapest option, you will be hard-pressed to find better quality. Their focus on quality in every detail is evident through every stage of their work and the outcome is fantastic. We couldn't be happier with how things turned out and we would enthusiastically recommend them!

> Linda,
> Thank you for sharing this review. Steven and I thoroughly enjoyed working with you and Doug, as well. I look forward to catching up in 2017 when we schedule photos and your 1 year warranty punch list.

**★★★★★ — Jim Brewer, Sept. 2016**

> Best Architectural firm I have dealt with. They provide the most detailed information on there plans. Easy to work with.

**Comment from DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC:**

> Thanks for sharing the review Jim. Steven and I appreciate it and look forward to working with you again soon.

> D. W. Ricks Architects provided residential design, competitive bidding and construction management services for our whole-house renovation project, which began March 2010 and concluded July 2012. Their design plans and specked materials were excellent and achieved our desired results. The only area where we think they fell short was project management -- staying on top of the construction company they recommended. That said, we would hire D. W. Ricks Architects again if we require architectural services.

**Comment from DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC:**

> Clara & John,
>
> A belated thank you from Steven and I for your review. I will follow-up with you for more insight over the construction oversight issue. I was not aware of any concerns and it would be helpful to get more input.

> I worked with DW Ricks on a kitchen and family room remodel of our nearly 100 year old bungalow. They did a great job designing a functional space that meets our needs while maintaining the integrity and character of our home. I was grateful to have their guidance during the entire process, from concept to completion. In particular, it was wonderful having their oversight during construction, ensuring that no details were overlooked and that the construction was completed as designed.

**Comment from DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC:**

> Lauren,
> Thanks for your review and support, Steven and I appreciate it greatly. I will be in touch in late Fall to schedule photos.

**★★★★★ — Tracy Morris, Aug. 2016**

> DW Ricks Architects is a talented firm with many great ideas. It was wonderful to see such creative ideas put into action.

> Tracy,
> Thanks for your review. Steven and I look forward to working with you again soon.

**★★★★★ — janskelton, Aug. 2016**

> We have hired DW Ricks twice. The first project was in 2000 for an addition that involved going up, out (in two directions) as well as excavating a new basement. We were so pleased with the first project that we hired DW Ricks for a 2010 third floor addition to our home. We were very pleased with David Ricks' ability to listen to what was important to us, and come up with creative ideas. After both additions a number of people commented that our house did not look like a house with an addition, it looked like a home that had always been designed to look as it did. David also designed a home that fit in with the character of the neighborhood and -- although much larger than some of the surrounding houses - utilized rooflines and architectural features to minimize the appearance of the size difference. David's estimates of construction costs were reasonably accurate, allowing us to budget appropriately.

**Comment from DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC:**

> Jan,
>
> A belated thanks for your detailed review. Steven and I greatly appreciate your support and look forward to the trifecta if you could possibly endure living through one more construction project.
>
> Best Regards,
> David

**★★★★★ — Cameo Kitchens, Inc., Aug. 2016**

> Having worked with many DW Ricks many times, I can attest to their professionalism, responsiveness and attention to detail. From the birds-eye-view all the way down to the fine details, Steven Crawford and the DW Ricks' staff are closely involved and dedicated to their customers satisfaction.
>
> I highly recommend DW Ricks to anybody seeking a predictably smooth, well managed construction project!

**Comment from DW Ricks Architects + Associates, PC:**

> Thank you George and Karl for sharing our review. We look forward to working with Cameo in the future.

 - Location: Arlington, VA

 - Description: This house is located in Lyon Village just a block from the bustling Wilson Boulevard corridor in downtown Clarendon. The former modest side-hall Colonial was transformed by a whole-house remodel, pop-top and rear addition. In truth, it is a new home. The few existing walls and spaces kept were totally refinished and rebuilt. The original home occupied a very favorable, but, now restricted position on its lot. In zoning parlance, the only option to maintain that preferred "Grandfathered" house p…

Green Home Choice is an elective alternative permitting process emphasizing energy efficient design. Some Green features of note incorporated into the design include: deconstruction, salvage & reuse of the original house & its components; Green construction management; Optimized building envelope performance; Geothermal heating & cooling systems; Recycled and rapidly renewable building materials;…

 - Description: The second time is the charm... Sited on 1 acre, this estate property is in a secluded McLean neighborhood encompassed in the front and rear by protected woodlands. Our client is the home's second owner. In 2006 we expanded and remodeled the original rear 1-story family room and kitchen as shown in our Portfolio under the Miller Residence. In 2014 we remodeled everything left untouched in the first phase including expansion of the overall footprint, raising the second floor ceilings to 9 feet, a…

 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 30
 - Description: This 1939 stone, side-hall Colonial is located on a bustling street corner in Lyon Village. The addition takes its inspiration from the corner lot orientation and distinctive original vintage stone clad house, a well known community landmark. The owners, one a lawyer, the other a college professor, both trained chefs, asked for a substantial addition and remodel to their 1930's side-hall Colonial. The wish list included informal living space for cooking, family and entertaining, extra bedrooms a…

 - Location: McLean, VA
 - Photos: 30
 - Description: A tale of two facades... The owners had differing opinions about the genre their remade Rambler would ultimately assume. Both were agreed on size and disposition of the new spaces, but, a favored house style was very much a point of conjecture. One was a fan of the traditional Revival styles found in Seaside, FL, and favorite family vacation destination. The other was inspired by a more modern vernacular. Ultimately, the design solution combines both styles into one cohesive composition. Being a…

 - Description: Existing 70's split level re-imagined with a series of front and rear contemporary additions. The rear addition faces on Potomac Overlook Park in Arlington, VA. The new work includes a screen porch, upper & lower decks, remodel of the entire existing lower level, new in-law suite addition, and new covered front entry.
- [Praed Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/praed-residence-pj-vj~66432)
 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: In addition to winning an Arlington Historic Award this popular remodel addition was published in three separate issues of BETTER HOME AND GARDENS. The 1910 historic Foursquare Craftsman-era farmhouse is located in the Historic District of Maywood. Historic design guidelines require all additions be located behind original structures. Given the lot's corner orientation, the side facing addition is stepped back several feet to allow the original historic facade profile to remain intact and promin…
- [Gorman Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/gorman-residence-pj-vj~608124)
 - Location: Alexandria, VA
 - Photos: 16
 - Description: This 1960's speculative "builder house" in Alexandria was sufficient in size negating need for expansive additions. However, ground floor living spaces were constrained and poorly situated. Inexplicably, the original house completely ignored the property's greatest asset, unimpeded views and access to Little Hunting Creek! The tidal water is both a source of visual serenity and outdoor activity. From their backyard the homeowner can slide kayaks into the creek. It's a short paddle out to the Pot…
- [McEnearney Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mcenearney-residence-pj-vj~608082)
 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 20
 - Description: The original house was an eclectic mix of American Foursquare combined with the steeply pitched roof form typical of a Cape. However, the Foursquare genes are clearly dominant as seen by the efficient square plan and honest handcrafted woodwork, inside and out. Early in the project planning stages the Owner requested the addition be compact and project no higher than the original house. To manage the addition’s height, exterior walls are broken down into multiple gabled facades. Façade planes va…
- [Volpe Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/volpe-residence-pj-vj~2897830)
 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 17
 - Description: Remaking a vintage Colonial This project is located in the very desirable North Arlington neighborhood of "Tara". Like many established Arlington neighborhoods, the housing stock in Tara is a mix of eclectic styles dating back from a post-war era. The original Volpe house was built in the late 1930's. And like most homes from this period, it lacked modern upgrades and the desired space allocation expected in today's homes. The remade house more than doubled the original house.
- [Pocrass Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pocrass-residence-pj-vj~1982165)
 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 21
 - Description: This former small brick Cape was expanded both up and forward. Project goals included: An open-plan family room big enough to accommodate an eating area; Enlarged kitchen; Powder; Entry foyer & covered entrance; A deck; And new 2nd floor master & guest suites. The family room recaptures and expands the former den - guest suite. The conversion provides an expansive light filled entertainment space, including the kitchen, and promotes much improved overall flow to all ground floor spaces. The new…

 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 20
 - Description: The owners of this Clarendon, VA Dutch-Colonial hoped to add a new 2nd floor master suite above their existing 1-story rear family room. Additional project goals included upgrades to the existing family/kitchen area, a new covered deck for entertaining & cooking, and improved overall aesthetics befitting the style of the original house. The below photos of the original family room clearly indicate the addition's incongruence in style with the main house. The family room itself would be reused, h…

 - Location: Bethesda, MD
 - Photos: 15
 - Description: Creating The Not So Big Addition The owners of this Bethesda brick Cape decided to forgo the temptation to do the typical large addition. Instead they resolved to add just enough space for a new ground floor master suite, hall bath, kitchen and also expand the second floor by one additional bedroom. The quid pro quo of the decision to go smaller enabled more extensive interior remodeling and upgraded finishes. The exterior rear addition uses a matching brick base to better blend the addition wit…
- [Doyle Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/doyle-residence-pj-vj~1984906)
 - Location: Arlington, VA
 - Photos: 25
 - Description: This project fronts on Lubber Run, one of Arlington's great watershed parklands. The addition design infuses the park setting into both new and existing spaces. The ground floor addition is organized as an informal open-plan living area with generous window groupings that maximize woodland views. The existing living and dining rooms enjoy borrowed light and park views through large new openings created in the existing former rear exterior wall. Peaking above, and barely visible from the street,…

 - Description: Traditionally Bungalows were modest 1 1/2 - Story Craftsman style houses. Many were considered "starter homes" made from kits produced and sold by Sears, Roebuck and Company, like this one. The overall ground floor footprint of a traditional Bungalow was modest and the upper floor was even smaller. Given low headroom, second floor space was generally only possible centered under the main roof ridge and dormers. The Owner's primary goal here was to expand the second floor area to allow for additi…

 - Description: Small additions, combined with strategic modifications, can make an impact that is far greater than the sum of the addition's parts. The home owner had great respect for her vintage Bungalow. One of just a few original Craftsman homes yet to be redeveloped in this Clarendon neighborhood. A new one-story addition was to replace a sub-standard rear wing lacking adequate space and proper HVAC. The new addition is slightly greater in area to the original room it replaced. The new work also includes…

 - Description: The Second Time Around … The original post-war house underwent a renovation in the 1990’s which included a rear addition and residing. The added space served the growing family well, but, over time focus shifted back to the original living spaces, untouched in the first improvement, and updating the overall style of the house. Our addition, slightly increased square footage, however, the primary design focus concentrates on improving overall flow and space utilization. For example, the original…

 - Location: Arlington, VA

 - Description: Center-hall Colonials are much maligned for their cookie cutter simplicity. Many post war examples are unadorned brick boxes without detail or style. Vexing is the plain and common exterior. It begs the question, can a simple Colonial remain true to its heritage and still have style, grace and Identity - and the answer is absolutely! The first project, in this mult-phase renovation, was to create Colonial "curb appeal". The single distinguishing quality all center-halls share is their utter effi…

 - Description: This original 1-story brick rambler received a second floor addition in the mid-1980's. The extra level served their family well, however, the owners were never fully satisfied with the ponderous appearance of the pop-top addition. 20 plus years later, and now empty nesters, the owners decided to address their home's curb appeal and also take the opportunity to expand the lower living and kitchen spaces. An unused screened porch was enclosed and expanded front and rear. The original open-plan li…

 - Description: Respecting the Neighborhood... This was a typical post war house built in the neighborhood of Westover. At 50 years plus, modernization was long overdue. After an initial cost analysis, renovation was deemed the cheaper alternative verses knocking down and building new. Remodeling was also determined the more energy efficient construction path. New house energy standards were incorporated into the existing structure, however, salvaging most of the existing shell, and foundation, yielded enormous…

## Community Q&A

**Q: What kind of wood is used on the deck here - beautiful!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The deck is Ipe. It is a sustainable farm grown wood from South America. Unlike conventional lumber, even mahogany, Ipe is extremely durable and long lasting. It is in the "Iron Wood" category. They are extremely dense, impervious to rot, resists boring insects and will not burn. We typically recommend Iron wood for all our projects that have decks. We interchange Ipe and Garapa frequently. Iron woods are widely available and are similar in price to a good synthetic decking alternative but we feel the natural wood color is much more attractive. The color is similar to teak if treated with a sealer annually to maintain the rich golden hues.

**Q: Can I ask: how wide is the countertop with embedded grill?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I'm trying to get an idea of spacing for a small built-in grilling station I'm looking to add to our deck. Thanks!

A: This counter is 8’-6” wide x 2’-1” deep, but, you should always verify size and clearances required for the specific grill you decide on.

**Q: Wall color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wall color?

A: It's dogue grey DC-06 from Benjamin Moore

**Q: kind of lights on porch ceiling** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This project is within the registered Historic District of Maywood, VA. There were very strict rules governing design, use of materials, detailing, etc. The porch had to maintain traditional materials and details similar to that of the period the house was originally built. The decking was T&G pine flooring and the rails were made from traditional wood railing stock parts for balusters, handrails and bottom rails.

**Q: Exterior** *(in Photo Questions)*

What color is the outside?

A: The exterior wall color is "Kentucky Haze" by Benjamin Moore.

**Q: What is the siding, trim, and window color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Sorry for the late response, I've been away. The siding and trim are all synthetic. The lap siding is Hardiplank. The upper and lower siding are the same, we just vary the exposure to create the different texture. The upper and lower zone paint is also two different colors. All the trim is solid PVC. Depending on cost or profile it can be a combination of Versatex, Axek, Polygem or Fypon.
