What kind of wood is this? pine, oak, maple, alder?

A: Hi Cecile,
Thanks for the questions. The pictures shown are of the actual piece you will receive. That said if you'd like something slightly different we can make you a custom piece. 
We generally don't recommend staining reclaimed lumber because you lose a lot of character. About 95% of our mantels are delivered "as-is" which just means sanded with a polished surface. 5% have a water-based clear coat on applied which darkens them up.
We would be happy to provide the best practices for installation given your current setup.

A: Hi Sally, There is no traditional stain on the wood. There is a clear finish with a van dyke brown glaze applied.
