We have a problem with our house plan (the house will be built this summer) We put windows for backsplash on the plan. The floor of the whole place is going to be polished concrete, and we have a timberframe. We want to create a modern but warm home. We were thinking of walnut and white cabinets, with white quartz countertops. But now, we have a problem since the window-backsplash is finally impossible to realize. Should we just forget about kitchen windows? Should we place a window in the middle of the kitchen? If we do, should we put a retractable fan so the window wont have much dust while we cook? Should we switch the sink and the cooktop? This third option seems to be the easiest one, but I don't like black cooktops on white quartz... I guess I am all messed up and really need your fresh and brilliant advices! thank you A: @rocketjcat I agree! Stealing away from a beautiful view would be a crime and even though lighting has become so advanced these days it's still hard to mimic natural light. Though I would still recommend the layered lighting plan that I had mentioned and to make the most use of the space would switch the sink and cooktop! That seems to be the best option. **Q: Backsplash ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)* I would like suggestions on a backsplash. I will be taking the granite one off. If you can show me pictures that would be great. A: You could always do a subway tile with an accent strip and then do a mosaic under the hood/over the cooktop. You can get subway tiles in other colors apart from white. Daltile has a great line of ceramic subway tiles. You can even get them in several different sized i.e.. 2x4 3x6 4x12 as well as in a beveled edge which would give your more variation and definition to your backsplash. You can than choose a mosaic to use as an accent strip which can be cut to the size you want and the mosaic can also be used over the cook top. Most mosaics come in 12" x 12" strips with mesh backings which will help when deciding the thickness of your accent strip. To match your granite/cabinets and keep with the warmth of the kitchen you could also go for a natural stone. I would recommend a walnut travertine. Topcu makes beautiful travertine and other natural stone pieces. Just remember that with natural stone it needs to be sealed. I could go on forever but can help you get started and headed in the right direction. **Q: Need paint suggetions for kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* Remodeled our kitchen and would like to change our kitchen wall color. What color do you suggest? A: I would go with a cool color tone. Cool colors tend to recede and will give the illusion of an larger more open space. With the color choice of the walls now I feel the space is too cramped and with a cooler color would help open up the space. You could go with about any color as your color palette now with your cabinets, countertops and so forth aren't too strict and fall within the lines of a more neutral tone. **Q: Looking for counter tops I love marble but my husband won't let me do** *(in Photo Questions)* What is the top of the island ? A: I would recommend quartz! I usually deal with Cambria(cambriausa.com) but quartz countertops have come along way with different design aspects. There are a lot of different designs to choose from some of which could come close to your marble look. My favorite from Cambria is New Quay! When choosing cambria you have available to your great customizable options in which most of the time can fit almost any budget. Also quartz is said to be as almost as hard as a diamond meaning that scratching or cutting into it would be rather hard. --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
