We’ve been using the shower ~3 months but the issue started after the very first shower; it spreads with each shower and now affects not only the shower floor but also the curb and wall grout. Our contractor and 3 others (second opinions) are stumped based on visual inspection with the naked eye. The only thing they commented on was that grout was used at the changes of planes, which I have already requested be removed and replaced with silicone/caulk to be in accordance with TCNA guidelines. The obvious possibilities (preslope, weep holes, grout mix, sealant) have pretty much been ruled out. The problem in areas does dry out with a hair dryer, only to come back. Some areas do not dry out…assuming that means perhaps a lot of water behind? The problem affects 3 different types of grout and 3 different surfaces—plus both sealed and unsealed grout—so I figure one common denominator is the mortar. I was looking back at progress photos (see below), showing what appears to be spot bonding and certainly not 95% coverage; unfortunately I didn’t know this was against standards at the time. After Googling, I found a few websites describing our exact grout problem as a result of insufficient mortar so I’m confident this may very well be the root of the problem (https://www.ceramictilefoundation.org/blog/insufficient-mortar). Plus, we had several issues with the tile/grout work already, including two hallow-sounding floor tile, so this “fits.” Our contractor has repeatedly stated it can’t/shouldn’t be puddling water, because it would drain down due to gravity. (Can anyone comment on this?) I did buy a pinless moisture meter with masonry setting on Amazon which is giving high readings, but not sure how reliable it is? Finally, please know that I did my due-diligence when choosing our contractor. We went with one of the most highly reviewed and highly rated remodeling companies in our area (licensed in our state) with countless recommendations from neighbors and on community forums. We are so frustrated and just desperate for answers. Any insight is greatly appreciated. A: Lack of mortar coverage creating voids containing condensation. No repair. 100% contractor error. Mud base should be level around wall perimeter. Appears cement backer board buried in mud bed. Moisture will wick up the walls into the wall cavity. A capillary break of sealant is required between mud bed and CBU (cement backer unit). Sorry for your situation. Workmanship shows zero experience. **Q: Anyone with steam shower experience? Transom window advice needed.** *(in Windows)* My glass guy doesn't want to do a transom ON my tile wall/ceiling because of the multiple grout lines. He's suggesting cutting a floating window and using a smaller transom. Any other suggestions? A: A flexible plastic sweep can be installed on transom at the ceiling and door to make a seal. **Q: Suggestions on how to finish edges when using uneven/3D tile?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello! I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations on how to go about getting a clean, seamles edge or 90 degree corner when using an uneven/3D tile? Specifically, I'm interested in a fluted tile but not sure how a Schluter Rondec would work with these? Any suggestions or tips welcome! Here is the tile design I'm specifically concerned about how the tile inside the top of the niche will meet at the edge. A: Not for me to comment on design. Simply how to make it work. Miter cuts. Problem solved. **Q: Schluter trim strip and grout colors--match?** *(in Remodeling)* Edited: These are surround tiles for a white bathtub. Would you match the grout to the background color or the veining color? And would you match the Schluter trip strips to the grout color? We would like it without a curb, our contractor says no. Our plumber says he has seen them and there is a "trick". Anyone know the trick? It is not the plastic or rubber overlayment to the joists. We cannot cut into the joists nor can we raise the floor. We are trying to go without a door, or put a door to the floor without a curb. Neither is recommended by our contractor. Additionally if extend out a bit farther (bathroom is 5 x 16, we may add a tub thus making that portion a wet room. Any thoughts? Thanks! A: " Our plumber says he has seen them and there is a "trick" This is it. Sister 2x4's 3/4" below top of joists. Fill with 3/4" subfloor. Use a pre-fabricated base for tile. Your qualified installer will do the math determining underlayment's, uncouplers, waterproofing or which combination is needed for the specific project. I've used this method often. GN Builders is suggesting the same method above. **Q: Porcelain tiles floor** *(in Flooring)* These are glue stains ( I think so, if I am wrong please correct me ) on my floor porcelain tiles. How do we remove these. Grouting has not been done yet. A: It's wax. Used for packaging. Very common. Warm water and a wallpaper scraper. It often comes off as one piece. Don't grout before removing.
