> EXCELLENT design advisor! I worked with Richard at DesignUnplugged on the design/furnishing of a 1970s beach condo. With Richard's expert eye, the place was transformed into a warm comfortable family-friendly space. Everyone who visits is impressed by how everything just fits together, without being too fussy. Richard advised virtually, sending me ideas and suggestions - and it worked great. Richard would offer ideas on things I would never have thought of before, and they look GORGEOUS! I loved working with Richard.

> My house burned to the ground. I had to make decisions quickly to deal with insurance. DesignUnplugged worked with me from the beginning developing plans to rebuild the house from the foundation up. Richard's skills and abilities to comprehend the circumstances and then take quick and focused actions based on my needs made the process so much easier. I felt well cared for, largely because he listened to me, remained available and adaptable, employed his inherent design senses, and made my rebuild journey personal. He made subtle adjustments to the original layout of the house to develop a new living concept for me with an open plan and a more senior friendly accessibility– all the while incorporating my desire for a modern aesthetic. In truth, I could not have rebuilt without Richard’s expertise

> "I moved into my home a few years ago and loved the proportions of the living room and its connectivity to the kitchen. DesignUnplugged helped me design a new kitchen to my taste and it turned out great. I thought I could do the living room myself but began to feel overwhelmed with the different directions I could go. Richard untangled my thoughts, again. He sorted all my ideas and identified the common elements and needs of the space. He saw what inspired me in the images I shared with him. I felt heard and validated. He helped unlock my block, and when I couldn't meet in person, he worked seamlessly with me through emails and texts. My next project with Richard will be my master bedroom suite!”

With Asian references in the sets design , the concept to create a dark back drop and feature the lighter furniture came to the forefront. To maintain a simplicity and cohesiveness a black and white scheme unfolded for paint and accessories. IN order to bring the owners personality to the room, eclectic and whimsical elements add to the overall aesthetic right down tot he upholstery on the chairs. Men's sweaters or varying…

 - Description: The owner possessed two classic cars which were to be showcased in the garage. The proximity of the garage to the house and patio required delicate details to compliment the existing home. The residence was also in an historic district which required review and approval for context. Appearing to be more of a courtyard guest house was the key. Selecting a green to blend with the treed lot and compliment the house finishes created the visual trick to be smaller in scale given it's adjacency to the…

## Community Q&A

**Q: New house but so much maple wood!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need advice on what to do with the existing floor (real wood), counters (granite) and cabinets (maple). The same cabinets are on the main floor in the living room, dry bar area and powder room.

A: First, need more understanding about what concerns yo about the wood. That it all matches, that's Theresa so much, that it seems sparsely dispersed around the house, you dislike light woods, it makes you think of...what issue are you trying to address with it.

Opinion, it's really very nice and clean. It suits the space and character of the rooms in the photo.

You might start considering adding a full back splash, a rug in the dining area, larger scaled/visually heavier light fixture at the island, removing some upper cabinet doors for open shelf or glass doors and lighting...

If you can explain your reasons a bit more fully, there might be other options to consider before you go to great expenses to make changes in stains and counters.

**Q: Need suggestion on wall art** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have wall art on back of my breakfast table. I feel something empty on that wall, there is so much space on that wall.

A: Diagram of a possible larger scale backdrop not requiring paint.
The ultimate goal is to get a stronger presence and larger scale created with some of the suggestions above. Avoid smaller items and too much clutter/cluster. Honor and enhance the piece you have as the star of the arrangement. The idea for a pendant light is a good one as indicated by groveraxle. keep it simple in shape, color and texture to do the balancing act you need in the area.
The use of a larger screen can assist in making the long wall create a sense of place for the table. flat and secured to wall, allow the end panels to move freely and on an angle. if you do this idea, the darker makes a stronger relationship to the table and floor, it also highlights the art piece better.

**Q: Paint the brick or no?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We changed our siding to gray on our fixer upper, and have plans to add a portico over the steps. We cant decide if we should paint the brick or leave it. There are paint splatters from previous owners. Also, should the porch railings and posts be white or perhaps cedar? I would like to add shutters, but again, color? I thought black, but the color of the roof throws me off. Any advice would be great!

A: Great feedback ad conversation. Might not be able to react till Monday, but I will.

**Q: Is there a better way to layout the addition we are doing?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello,
We are bumping out the outside wall that currently sits above half the garage. The home is your typical split level. We love the general floorplan except for one tiny detail. The master bathroom is very narrow. By doing a bump out, we expect to dramatically improve the master bathroom and allow for larger closets in all the upstairs bedrooms.
The proposed design provides for a his and her's walk in closet, double sink, steam shower, and a water closet.
Upstairs guest bath is also improved by allowing comfortably enough room for a double sink.
We are happy with this revision of the proposal, but before proceeding to the next steps we'd like to get input from others. :)
Thanks!
Here is the proposed design:

Here is the current house:

A: Three considerations:
Based on the 2'4 shower door I think it will be tight with two people using the sinks.
Is the window above the sink a transom window with mirror below? If not, have you considered how the mirror and window coexist?
Diagrammatically, the shower reads like glass walls. Having the cabinets butt into glass is a difficult detail to pull off and difficult to keep clean.

Consider two, sinks at the transom window and a half wall to a few inches above the counter to receive the glass and terminate the millwork.

If you want a larger window at the sinks, divide the wall in thirds with mirrors flanking the taller window.

**Q: Help with Family TV room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just got my new couches for the family room. Looking for the ideas for the rug, side tables and coffee table.

A: Huge help to have the other side of the room. I am sketching a layout diagram or you to consider. I think you'll have two options when I'm done.
Apologies if this answer is buried in above notes, what is the size of the shag rug? Can't quite make it out on the label.

**Q: Beach house decor ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi awesome Houzzers. I'd love some ideas for this living area. Sectional is brand new. The feature wall is faux distressed in black white brown and aqua. (About 7' long). Matte black barn lamp sconces are on way.

I welcome ideas for the coffee table and tv console.

But I am focused right now on an area rug. The interior sides of the sectional are about 5'. Should an area rug extend beyond toward the tv? What shape?

I like beach colors but don't want nautical kitsch.

And yes I will want wall art and throw pillows at some point. Thanks all!!!

A: Here are a few sketches to get you around the room and furniture placement.
Relying on some of the colors you have liked above and building on a beach reference with some modern elements that transition between the two. Attempting to bring lighting around the room, for tasks and ambience. Using some mirror to reflect it and expand the width of the space. Hope you can make sense of the collage. Note I rotated the dining table chairs 45 degrees to assist in narrowing the dining area if needed. It also makes a more dynamic layout and opens it up to be more inviting. The rug is 10 foot square placed about 8" in form the rear legs. The coffee table should max at 42" square or round. I like the square personally to better anchor the seating and room. Layered texture, color, and character will enliven the space and bring your personality out.
I also added two white thick shelves the width of the TV niche to provide the TV base and the gap between the shelves would house any equipment to entertain. Doing a shelf, a few inches less deep than the niche and running the length of the niche will feel less cluttered with a aside table near by. As well, it simplifies the system and looks more custom/cleaner.
I hope you find some elements to keep you moving in these.
