Any ideas on how to screen it? It is near the entrance next to a boxwood that can't be moved. A: Have you thought about adding another Boxwood or 2 in front of the meter? **Q: Privacy plantings?** *(in Landscape Design)* a new house was built with oversized windows that towers over our property. We are going to add plantings along the fence line (picture here is our parking area). Any suggestions for zone 7, columnar trees that would add some privacy here? This spot gets partial sun and shade. A: Giant Green Arbs, Emerald Green, or Techny are all awesome for privacy **Q: Getting rid of moss on front lawn** *(in Landscape Design)* Moss growth is starting to take over in shady parts of my lawn. So I am planning to remove 3 Blue spruce tree's that are dying, that I think is contributing to the problem. So my question is, will the moss gradually die out being exposed to sunlight. Or will it have to be removed manually? A: Moss usually grows in wet areas and/or in highly acidic soils. The lime helps to bring down the acidity thus correcting the moss. Best to test first. **Q: Fix Swampy Area Where Water Drains from Roof** *(in Landscape Design)* I have a French drain that runs water from our house (mostly roof) below our yard and the pipe stops about 12 feet from the road which has a water drain right next to my yard. It is located on a slope, but the water eventually just sits in the grass, which has basically created a swamp and overgrows the grass (which is impossible to cut because there is so much standing water). What are my options to help fix the standing water? We have considered extending the pipe to the water drain, but I don’t think that is up to code. We have also considered getting rid of the grass and adding a rock bed (not sure this would get rid of the water issue). Thank you For your help. A: I would contact the city and see if you can connect to the city sewer or not - at times you are allowed to **Q: laying sod steps** *(in Landscape Design)* We had someone lay sod professionally last year and i realized there is another small section I would like to just do myself. I have been researching the proper steps and have scheduled the sod delivery for this weekend. I am renting a rototiller and picking up soil tomorrow so it has a few days to settle. My questions are, I've read both compost and topsoil are good to work in, how do I choose between the two? I'm using cedar grove. is it better to fertilize before or after laying the sod, I've read both. Any recommendations for a good fertilizer? Any tips for macking sure the dirt is extra smooth before laying the sod? I'll also be using a sod roller for after it's installed. A: I would recommend using a power raker on low to etch up the soil before. It doesn't really need the extreme turnover that a rototiller gives. You still need to get it etched up enough to have a smooth transition line for the roots to start establishing in. With this, you also don't have to smooth things out as much. Just use a metal rake to grade it perfectly before laying. Also, regular topsoil is perfect. Also, you probably don't need the roller before or after. Using it before will compact the soil and if the ground is flat enough before applying the sod, there is no need for it after! We always use a starter fertilizer after the sod is applied. Helps give it that extra boost to get the roots growing. Goodluck! **Q: Curb Appeal - Help** *(in Landscape Design)* We have a beautiful home, but every time I drive up to it, I can't help but think I don't like the curb appeal. I don't know if it's the color of the stucco (too dark?), the color of the windows (light green-is), the color of the wood on the door and at the roof line, or the metal roof mid-house line. Or maybe the landscaping? Help, please! Any suggestions to improve the curb appeal welcome. A: The landscaping isn't horrible but as Dig Doug posted adding some flowering plants and/or color would spruce things up quite a bit!
