Notice these shadows on the ceiling. Are they from dry wall tape? Is it acceptable? Also, very uneven finish to baseboards...especially where they join. Is this really an issue I should push? Lastly, well maybe not LAST, but certainly another issue is the cracking of seals around window casings. I was told this is "normal" for new construction in 100+ degree weather. A: Well it is fairly difficult to point you in the right direction with just one photo and no spec sheet, but I will give it my best shot. If the builder stated a level 5 finish on the ceiling then the tape joints would be an issue worth working on. If they spec’d a knockdown finish which it looks like on the photo it is then the tape marks are visible mainly because of the way the light comes into that space and the style of finish. The installers of our new windows and sliding doors put these rectangular blocks into the frames (photos below) which prevent them from opening fully. It amounts to 4-6" of lost opening in multiple windows and sliding doors. The worst are the ones at the top and bottom of a small double hung window in a bathroom that's otherwise very steamy. When we asked the installers they said the blocks are necessary, something about keeping rain water out of the sill. But does that make sense with the sliding patio doors where the blocks are horizontal? Can anyone tell me what these are for and whether they're really necessary? Pictures of patio doors are just to show how they can't open fully with the blocks. A: Ruth, You could possibly see if they have an alternate style door handle but you may only gain up to 2 inches before the doors hit each other without any handle on at all. Do you know what brand the door is? **Q: is this waterproofing good enough?** *(in Remodeling)* Contractor keeps telling me that this is good, but my understanding is that he should have sealed the seams and nails using mortar and tape instead of caulk, before applying redgard. But he keeps saying that’s unnecessary because he used redgard. Is this right? First picture is what it looked like before I pointed it out. He tiled over that anyway. I pointed it out again and second and third pictures are his fix ups on where it’s still exposed. Is this ok?? A: It depends what you call good enough? I’ve seen contractors that think the board itself is waterproof and there is no need for a membrane but clearly that is bad mis-information. The corner and all seams should have been taped with the correct tape for the application. Wether it be fiberglass tape or mesh cement board tape. The valve seems great, moves like silk. The escutcheon shows a wide strip of black rubber gasket between the center escutcheon hole and the handle. The plumber says this is right, but I think it looks terrible, and will only get worse as the rubber ages. Is there any way to correct this? A: I have installed multiple hansgrohe rough in trims, and if you could attach a picture I can better help explain what may be happening. **Q: Porch Roof Help** *(in Porches & Decks)* Hello. I have a small 1 floor ranch house. I had an aluminum awning over my front porch. I tore it down, and want to build a new roof over the front porch out of wood. I am curious about the best way to attach it to the house. I will be attaching it on the low end of the roof, to the eve. My thought was to remove the front facia board, and replace it with a 2x6, and then attach the new joists to that for the porch. Is this proper? Or should I attach directly to the existing joists (extend them)? The angle will be changing slightly from the pitch of the house roof, to the new porch roof. I am having a new roof put on the whole house this summer, and want to get the porch top built before the roof goes on, so they can shingle it all with the same stuff. Porch roof will be approx 15x8 feet, covering the concrete area. Thoughts? The gutter will be coming off and will be relocated to the front of the porch. A: From a design aspect, you have two options but with the space provided above the door it narrows it down to just one. I would propose it this way if I was contact to do the job. Remove gutter, fascia board, drip edge. Attach new rafters to existing then transition to the new roof pitch. I will attach a photo of the idea. **Q: Need Advice: Carpet or Wood at top of wood staircase** *(in Design Dilemma)* What looks best? Carpet lip over the wood staircase or extend the wood staircase to the top step. If so, full step or just lip over carpet? A: Usually we will do a bullnose out of wood on the top step that the carpet would transition into. So visually when you are walking up the stairs they are all the same.
