**Q: Decorating Small Living Room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I was hoping for suggestions on wall color, wall decorations, lighting, coffee tables and rug options. I have two new white couches and three boys ages 6, 9 and 14. I do not have to use the chest or lamps in the photo. I do not have to keep the current color. I was thinking of some abstract art with pink and/or mirrors. I was also thinking of a glass and metal (gold or silver) clean lined coffee table.
I am on a small budget but would save up for the right art, pieces, etc.

A: A few questions to clarify the use of the space. What is the purpose of the room? i.e. TV? living room, social gathering place, formal, casual? Do you like the current wall color? It looks nice with your sofas; if you like it, I would keep it. What is opposite the sofas on the left side of the front door? Your sofas have clean, modern lines and would work with a modern glass coffee table, but not sure I would recommend glass with kids. You're off to a beautiful start on your living room space.

**Q: What am I going to do with this huge curved fireplace wall?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

It's a nicotine stained yellow/cream color and we've redone the room in grey/white. The curvature is what is so unusual. Help!

A: I really like Jennifer's idea pictured above, painting the brick white. It really looks great with your gray walls and trim. It gives the space a more modern feel. Agree with not having tv over fireplace. I would recommend a larger rug that pulls in the color of your furniture, gray and white; it can be round or oval but follows the curve of the fireplace. Place rug approximately 1 ft from fireplace brick.

**Q: Furniture arrangement in a 1930's Tudor.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We bought a 1930's Tudor one year ago and updated/renovated it. We currently have no furniture so before I start buying I would love some advice. We kept a lot of the character of the house - refinished the original oak floors and trim and kept the textured walls.  I painted the walls grey and the fireplace surround in the living room white. The fireplace is on the longest wall opposite the entrance to the LR, but not totally centered in the room. Windows are on either side of the fireplace as well as on the wall to the right (front of house). There is nothing but wall on the wall to the left of the entrance or fireplace (opposite the front of house wall). There will be a wood mantle installed as well as a slate hearth. My style incorporated throughout the main floor is older (soapstone counters, antique brass fixtures, marble bathroom sinks, reclaimed light fixtures). My colors are grey's with natural wood accents and the antique brass. I like some pops of color but only with things like pillows, rugs, vases and art - easily changeable things. I love an older style that is either 30's-40's or even a little mid mod. Thanks for any advice.

A: If the room is deep enough, I would have the sofa face the fireplace with matching chairs on each side of the fireplace, angled facing the sofa. End tables on each side of the sofa, a round coffee table or padded, tufted ottoman in front of the sofa. Add a sofa table behind the sofa to soften the entrance into the space. Add a buffet on one of the side walls with matching chairs on each side. On the opposite side wall maybe a bench with a small round end table. Maybe add some bookshelves. Keep the conversation area in the middle of the room and add extra seating and furniture on the on the side walls.

**Q: Difficult living room layout - french doors flank fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are having a very difficult time placing furniture in this room. We currently have a similar layout as shown in these pics (previous owners). While the TV seems like it should go over the fireplace (we are getting rid of the cabinet and placing stone up to the ceiling) the couch needs to be far enough away for comfortable viewing. We have a full size couch and love seat to work with. We are considering purchasing a sectional to center on the fireplace/tv, but it seems like that might be an expensive mistake if it doesn't work.Any advice appreciated!

A: Look forward to seeing the L shaped arrangement. The one chair would probably work well next to the fireplace opposite the corner of the sofa and love seat. This should allow for cozy conversation in the center of your space with good viewpoints to both focal points. Let me know what you think.

**Q: End tables that work with this?! Help!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just purchased this sofa, chaise, and ottoman and will be picking them up in a few days. However, I can't seem to find end tables that would look good with it. I need advice on styles or shapes and colors that would complement this without looking funky! Thank you!

A: I agree with the above, round end table with glass would look great with lamps. I would keep the ottoman if you like it or add a coffee table that matches the end tables you pick out. You can add a floor lamp next to the chaise. Beautiful set! Enjoy your new furniture!

**Q: Modern Glam Room Accent Furniture Ideas Please :)** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My front room is coming along. Looking for ideas for a cool glam bench that I would put on the hardwood floor, facing the sofa, for additional seating, also to use for point of entry i.e., putting my bag, mail, etc. when you walk into the house.  Also looking for suggestions for end tables for my chairs.  Thanks so much.  I have on order the following gold coffee table, as well as higher sofa legs.

A: Don't panic. Mixing metals seems to work well in your room. You have done a beautiful job with the large picture displays over the sofa. Adding more gold touches throughout the space will give you a balanced look. The photo by Unplugged gives some great gold suggestions. Go with what you like, and you'll love your space. You have already done a great job with the art and furniture selections. Regarding adding a love seat, I don't like entering a room and seeing the back of a piece of furniture. It is not very inviting. A sofa table can soften the look; but make sure your space does not close off the entrance but still invites people in. Great job!
