> Brian and I have work together on an update to a 1954 mid century daylight basement ranch since 2006. We completely reworked and updated our home and also added a studio/garage. We also kept in mind the mid century character of the structure. Brian is/was great to work with and was willing to accommodate my time lines and preferences. Without Brian's help with this project we would have never come up with some of the outstanding design ideas he had with this project. Functionality and design were/are the most important elements of this project for us. Brian was always on time, on budget, and had invaluable advise and expertise. Brian was indispensable and crucial for us to have help us to realize our vision with this project. If you are considering an architect for a project of this nature, you would be fortunate to have Studio Coop to help you out.

**Comment from Studio Coop Architecture:**

> Jay, thank you so much for the kind words. I very much enjoyed working with you & Sylvia. It would be great to work with you again in the future, don't hesitate to call!

> Brian listened to my requests and heard beyond my needs. He thought of details which I could not even have imagined. Brian's attention to detail and his fabulous sense of aesthetics shines throughout the house design; inside and out, in functionality and in beauty. His communication skills, professional integrity, attention to schedule, and to financial details make him a joy to work with. I love my new home and thank Brian for making my dream a reality.

**Comment from Studio Coop Architecture:**

> Thank you, Kerry. I appreciate your kind words. It was a pleasure working with you as well. I'm so glad that you are happy in your new home.

> The project grew out of a need for a functional master suite closet and utilizing an under used attic space. We had a list of at least four other architects but our first meeting with Brian Murtagh of Studio Coop Architecture went so well that we felt confident that he could execute our dream closet remodel. This decision stood the test of time!
>
> • The scope of the initial remodel was to creat a functional walk in closet out of an existing attic space and to incoporate the existing tiny walk in closet into the master suite. By suggesting and designing minor changes to the actual bedroom area, Brian enhanced the scope of the remodel at minimum additional cost and gave us not just a dream closet but a dream bedroom as well!
> • Brian listens and listens well, but is not afraid of suggesting unique solutions and approach that you might not have considered before to really bring the wow factor to the design.
> • We worked with Brian through out the construction phase, with Brian making trips to site to check the progress. This was the best decision we ever made. Brian was not only able to keep the remodel on track but also administer quality control.
> • Our remodel had it's share of some serious problems with the contractor and ended with an arbitration, and finally a different, more honest contractor finishing the remodel. Brian's integrity and support through this difficult time was impeccable. He stood up for the truth and for his client against a very powerful and big name contractor. You will not find another professional like him.
>
> We are perennial remodelers and have worked previously with some very well known Portland Architects. Brian is the best we have ever worked with. He listens, has a keen eye for detail and brings surprise design elements that take the project to a level of excellence, every client hopes for.

**Comment from Studio Coop Architecture:**

> Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed, wonderful review and thank you for the referral as well!

> Brian Murtagh of Studio Coop Architecture is the architect of your dreams! I am so grateful to have had him as a part of two major remodels. He is gentle and knowledgeable, always keeps his cool and has a network of amazing colleagues and artisans. Most of all he listens and looks, with an expert eye for detail. My mid-century modern tastes were taken to unimagined heights and I can truly say the best part of the projects have been getting to see Brian at work. His design work is flawless, in keeping with the architectural style and landscape. He really made our property soar! Thank you, Brian!!

**Comment from Studio Coop Architecture:**

> Thank you for the kind words. It was great to work with you again! It is always fun to see you and Joseph!

**★★★★★ — Right Arm Construction, Jan. 2014**

Brian always has a great vision for all of our projects. He is extremely professional and willing to assist us in any manner. It is a pleasure working with him.

  - Location: Portland, OR

  - Description: Through misguided remodels in the 1970s and ’80s, the kitchen and second- floor bathrooms of this 1904 Emil Schacht house had lost their original character. The goal for this design was to combine modern space planning with period details and craftsmanship. Much of this was achieved by opening up the kitchen to the dining room and by creating direct access from the kitchen to the large side yard. A new mudroom and redesigned stair to the basement laundry room complete this home's transformation.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Cabinet color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful kitchen! Could you please tell me the paint color and finished used on the cabinets?

A: The paint for this kitchen is called Whip from the Devine Color line, satin finish. Unfortunately I don’t think the Devin line is being made anywhere anymore. For our projects we are now recommending Dove White in the Advance line by Benjamin Moore, satin finish
I hope this helped. Brian

**Q: Clean look! What thickness and material are the spindles made of?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks for appreciating the look. The spindles are actually cables. We worked hard to hide the attachments. Each cable was threaded individually, the tops were fixed, if I recall with a spot weld, and the bottom of the cable is threaded with a bolt that can be tightened if the cables loosen over time. We spaced the cables at 3 1/2” apart so that even with deflection there would never be more than a 4” gap - per code.

I hope this helped.

**Q: where did you get the wall faucet for the vessel sink?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Debbie,

All of the fixtures are Jado. Unfortunately I don’t think this line is being offered anymore. American Standard recently bought Jado and Porcher and have modified those line into their new luxury line DXV. Sorry I could be of more help.

Brian

**Q: Would love to know the square footage. Thank you.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Gayle, sorry it took so long to get back to you. The space that you are looking at in this photo is 336 sq. ft. If you include the kitchen the open plan space is 480 sq. ft. The whole unit is about 1,300 sq. ft. I hope this helps. Brian
