**Q: Master bedroom retreat ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My girlfriend and I just moved in to our new house and we would love for our bedroom to be warm, stylish and inviting. We are unsure what route to take to get there so we are hoping the wonderful community at Houzz can help us move in the right direction. I have attached pictures of the room, which was recently painted. As far as furniture we have decided on the bed and the lamps - could we make them work together? We'll also installed recessed lighting on the back wall. We'll take any suggestions on artwork (back wall) window treatment furniture and so on. Thanks!

A: Hi Roberto! I think your choice of the mother of pearl table lamp will be beautiful, and suggest you get two, one for each side of the bed. The hanging shell pendant in the other picture would make a sweet contribution as the central fixture, matching shells with shells. I sense that your style is contemporary, with a touch of cottage/country, and that you like texture and natural materials? You will definitely want a bed-frame including a headboard, to raise the bed up and finish it, so it looks more elegant. I think a cushioned fabric headboard with a soft, rounded shape would be nice, but I also like the idea of something wooden, perhaps reclaimed or distressed wood to continue the feel of the seaside or cottage. This choice will be one that dictates the style of the rest of the room. Do you want to say "classy and elegant" or "rustic and original" or something else? Imagine what materials and shapes you find most attractive, the two of you, and start there. You will also want two bedside tables, and your chosen table lamps (or even hanging pendants over each table- an unusual twist that I favour). If you go with these table lamps remember that you are working with a creamy white shade, so other fabrics should also have that colour or work with it. Make sure you get tables with at least one drawer each, you need a place to stash private stuff! Speaking of stashing stuff- once you have a bed frame, the under bed area can be used to store out of season clothes or whatnot. It seems like you also need bureaus as well- places to store your clothes? These should match the same colour wood as the bedside tables...try to make all your wooden items in the same family, in the same colour tones if not same types of wood. I also would like to see a nice armchair in there, a place to sit and read, or to put your clothes for the next day (or more than likely, your dirty clothes from that day!). Choose the armchair After you have chosen your carpet. A nice big one that comes out about 4 ft. from either side of the bed would be ideal...I might even move the bed further into the room, don't feel that it needs to be in the centre, a little asymmetry can be very freeing! Wish I could see it in person to really get a good sense. I'm new to this commenting via photograph. Hope I've started on the right track! Good luck!

**Q: Bathtub Dilemma for Mom.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need ideas to make this jacuzzi tub so my 81 your old mother can get in and out of safely.  I would like to get a walk in tub, but out of my budget.  Looking for any ideas?  Handicap steps?  Please help.

A: I think the step-in soaker tub would be ideal, as bathing takes less energy than showering, and is a place of respite that is good for the soul. If you could change the location of the faucet, perhaps then you could purchase a seat that attaches to the tub and swivels her 180 degrees? I know assistive devices exist for easy chairs, to help the person get up, and am just inferring what might (and Should) exist.

**Q: Help me with my bedroom and bedroom retreat** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi I need help with decorating my bedroom.  I want a nice calming retreat that will be masculine yet feminine to suit my husband and I taste.  I also have a retreat area that I am clueless on what to do to it.  Help!

A: I like the idea of putting the bed into the retreat area, although my first thought was to make that area into an office/sitting room or even into a dressing room, with all your bureaus and a big mirror... I think you could also dress things up a bit by putting down an additional carpet- I know it seems crazy, but it will look good! Work with shades of blue, some lighter than the existing blue on the duvet, to brighten the space. Some small pillows would be sweet to add some oomph to the bed. You may want to add a shelving unit to display or store some personal items, but more than anything you desperately need some art on the walls! Go with cooler colours to suit the blues. Try to find two that you like first, to place on either side of the TV, and work from there to add one above the headboard if ceilings are high enough.
