## Community Q&A

**Q: Help with navy & gold master bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi there,

I just bought my first house, and I'm look for help on how to complete the look in my master bathroom! The previous owners renovated it, and I like the colors and finishes. This is what the bathroom looks like now:

I really like the navy and gold, but I'm a little at a loss on how to proceed with this room. For the record, the vanity is dark navy blue (I think it looks closer to black in the photo). Here are my biggest concerns:

1\. I need to add some storage. Right now, the only storage is the vanity, which actually only has two drawers. I'm thinking of adding a storage cabinet above the toilet, but I'm not sure what color/style would go with the room. I found the exact vanity online, so you can see what the storage looks like: https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/breakwater-bay-pamula-37-single-bathroom-vanity-set-w002602472.html

2\. You can't really tell from the picture, but the light fixture, mirror, and sink faucet are all different shades of gold. It doesn't look terrible, but it feels like a lot of gold to not be consistent. I'm thinking of painting the mirror frame black just to break it up a bit, but I am completely open to other suggestions!

3\. Paint color - the room needs to be painted. Right now, its just a flat white. Even if the paint color stays white, I need to paint it with something that has more of a glossy finish. Currently, I think the white looks too bland, but I'm not sure what other color would really work in the room.

4\. Shower curtain! I was originally thinking something that was a solid navy with a bit of texture, but I'm not sure if that would make the room look too dark or closed off. There is a window that lets a lot of natural light in, so it could work. I also thought about a white curtain with some texture, but with the walls white I think it would just look washed out.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

A: Add an after photo?

**Q: I love this 90" tall photo but can only fit it here.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Is it ridiculously too large for my stairwell? This is a photoshop of it in place so feel free to comment on the size or the artwork itself! Thanks in advance!

A: love it - if possible I would line it up with top or bottom of windows. Love large art = great impact!

**Q: fireplace dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

what can I do within fireplace front???

A: is it wood burning or gas? There are so many beautiful tiles available right now, really depends on the rest of your decor, but consider glossy or dark tile, dark grout if wood burning so easier to clean off. And you can tile right over drywall, so you really are not limited, but I like the wood idea, then pull into built in look shelving on either side. I'd just go through the Houzz photos, though narrow the results by color and style. Save what catches your eye, and you will likely see what you are drawn to.

**Q: Our before and after** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This has been a journey that took us from functional and staid to our favorite rooms ?

A: I think you would see a spectacular difference with some undercabinet lighting, just in the area to the left of the microwave. I think all the comments about it being dark are probably also because these are night photos and you do not have all 3 of your pendant lights on (maybe too much glare when taking photos, right?). Big project, I'm sure nice to have it done! Some light and sheer drapes would look good in the dining room. Any \[grommet topped\[(https://www.houzz.com/products/citrus-ikat-curtain-prvw-vr~10741943) ones slide on easy, change quickly if you change your mind!

**Q: POLL: Words on the walls - Yes or No?** *(in Polls)*

What do you think about words directly on the walls as part of the decor?

VOTE and tell us below!

A: Yes + No - I've seen too many foreclosures with them.... the most offensive was a religious quote first thing as you entered an overly ostentatious home with a double stair case.

I'm jaded, in some places (on houzz!) they are lovely, especially if original. And the stickers are an easy way to personalize a home, especially for renters that don't want to put holes in walls, and can be a better look than a poorly done paint job.

**Q: POLL: Would you choose the same home again?** *(in Polls)*

Now that you know your home as well as you do.... Would you choose the same one again, if you had to do it all over again?

VOTE and tell us about it in the comments!

A: We have a well designed but common split level with constant discussion about how much to spend and what to do. The layout works for the two of us, with great personal space. we're very lucky - with an incredible lot, over an acre, in the city. We just toured a lot of million dollar homes this weekend. None had the privacy and views we have - something that means a lot to both of us.

One thing that was perfectly clear (that I know already, but sometimes over look), other than some surface finishes such as countertops, the furnishings, colors and staging make all the difference. And though expensive, and architect-designed, with all the virtual reality available, several still had issues with window placement, lack of storage, hard to clean surfaces and over complicated tile work.
