Concrete Elegance has been in business since February 2004. In addition to making countertops and sinks, we specialize in creating complex three-dimensional elements such as fireplace surrounds, wall panels and cladding, furniture, lighting fixtures, benches, floor tiles and living walls.

We are the only company in at least Ontario that can make large, thin panels that seamlessly wrap around corners, creating a true monolithic look for walls, countertops and fireplace surrounds. This ability is due to the special properties of our newest product – Engineered Cementitious Composite, also known as ECC.

Our creations have been installed in the Greater Toronto Area, the Golden Horseshoe, Muskoka, Prince Edward County and Washington, DC. We are located in Concord, Ontario, just north of Toronto.

> We can't say enough about Alla, the support she had in a young man Eric and the final product they provided for our backyard. Her ideas were always based in sound science, she looked at our dilemma and provided a solution whose design, and endurance, are both fabulous. We have a large multi-level deck with a 20' wooden table and bar. Some vertical wood was rotting and we looked at slate, stone, and even rebuilding from scratch. We needed a new top. A, everything else was finer. Alla built a form for a polished thin concrete top with a concrete lip along the entirety of the tables edges. She treated the wood for days, her preparation was considerable and precise. She spent days getting the color right, pouring, polishing, and applying a number of treatments that will ensure our new table outlives our deck. The look and feel of her work gives our deck's entertainment space a whole new vibe, we're absolutely loving it!

> You know those times when you find an artist who does great work and isn't satisfied until it's just the way it needs to be? Those rare professionals who charm you because of their character but mostly because of the quality of their work. That would be Alla, a 5star plus on everything from concept through to production and clean up. Highly recommended for concrete work that brings fine style and design to your home.

> Alla fabulously transformed our dated, textured brick ugly fireplace with a sleek and modern design in concrete. I love it! The simple elegance of the new hearth and mantel worked well to marry our old home with our updated renovation. The workmanship was excellent and Alla's follow up has been terrific. Highly recommend Concrete Elegance for anyone doing a project in concrete!

> We are very happy with the results and the service we received from Concrete Elegance. When people come to our home, one of the first things they compliment us on is our concrete countertops. Alla really has the ability to do concrete in a unique way that gives so much character to our home. She is also really good about returning to our home in the event that we need any touch ups afterwards.

## Community Q&A

**Q: how is this vented?** *(in Photo Questions)*

We love the look of the modern electric fireplaces, but seems you have to mount them on the wall and see the sides and vent. I’d love to build one in like this, but then where is the heat vent?

A: The heating function is disabled. I would have had to create vents on the top and sides if the client wanted to have heat.
I have never seen an electric fireplace that was used with heat, people install them specifically when they want the look of flames without added heat.

**Q: What's causing this leak next to the bath tub?** *(in Plumbing)*

I have a leak that's developed right outside the bathtub over the past 2 years. We ensured during showers to not let the water leak out from the corners. But still the part remained damp. I also confirmed it with a moisture meter and it was medium to high.

So I asked a handyman to cut it open to better investigate this moisture build up. The attached picture shows the moist parts removed. And the timber in the back looks quite bad too.

Given that it's not because of leaks during taking showers, what else could possibly be causing this kind of damage?
Is it because of a leak in the faucet and the pipe leading to the shower head?
Is it because of a leak under the bath tub?

My remodeling contractor is asking $3k labor just to replace the bath tub, investigate/fix the problem, install a new bathub. Do you think that's a reasonable amount in SF Bay area?

A: Is that an exterior wall? And was fibreglass insulation installed without a vapour barrier? You realize where this is going, don't you?
I'm sorry, you have an expensive renovation in your future. The entire wall needs to be opened up, all the wet insulation and rotten wood replaced, and proper vapour barrier installed. And remember to insulate particularly well behind all the plumbing, both supply and waste. This moisture problem could have been caused by condensation on incorrectly insulated pipes.
This is way beyond the skill level of a handyman.

**Q: renee\_bos@outlook.com** *(in Photo Questions)*

who can make me an fireplace like this in Oshawa area , there is an insert on natural gas already

A: Hi Renee, I would love to make a fireplace surround for you. Please call me to discuss the details - Alla Linetsky, 416-567-5529. Btw, your email address was typed incorrectly, my email reply to you was returned as undeliverable.

**Q: When should you call a plumber?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

There are the obvious times when you lack the skill or the problem is too complicated, but I'd love to hear your own personal threshold for making that call.
For me, it was when my garbage disposal backed up into my guest bathtub. Gross. You?
Share your experience! (photos encouraged)

A: Only for drain problems under the basement slab. If it's accessible without breaking concrete, we do it ourselves. I solder copper, crimp PEX and solvent-weld drain piping, my husband attaches fittings. But it took us a few mistakes to figure out how to do it well.

**Q: What is this faucet?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: I don't know - the client's designer ordered it. Sorry, I wish I could be more helpful

**Q: Have you remodeled a bathroom for $1,000?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Chrissy Torres remodeled this bathroom for $1,100. Got a similar DIY bathroom project? Houzzers would love to know how you were able to fix up your bathroom on a slim budget. Share your photos and tips!

A: Sharkbite fittings are plumbing connectors for dummies. It's a very bad idea to put them in a wall without an access door, because they can leak, especially when dummies use them.
