### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Sandra Shaheen, June 2020**

> Darlene Somrak is so knowledgeable and savvy in the realm of kitchen design. It was a pleasure to work with her and a comfort to have her at the helm of our kitchen project. She and Carl Polisena of Classic Custom Design worked well together to bring our dream kitchen to fruition. Selecting Carl is something we celebrate. He and Darlene were both on site and available for consultation in the countertop and backsplash measurement and installation. Darlene is creative while remaining sensitive to her clients' life style and use preferences, and Carl is superb at fulfilling that vision. We couldn't be happier.

> I know this is a bit late in submitting the review but we are just enjoying our new kitchen so much. I am not one to write reviews very often but felt this was a way to say how much we are enjoying the fruits of their labor. Darlene was very professional and offered us so many choices to have the kitchen our dreams. We weren't aware of all the details needed or the choices available to us to renovate our 30 year old kitchen. Darlene was very detail oriented and made sure all the i's were dotted and the t's were crossed. The installers were so meticulous in their work. Thanks so much for giving us our dream kitchen!

> It was an absolute pleasure for me and my husband to work with Darlene Somrak. We told her what we wanted and needed in our kitchen design, to make it functional for the way we use our kitchen, and she designed the most fabulous kitchen for us. She even took care of ordering all the appliances. Darlene made the whole process, from design to installation run smoothly. We’re glad to be part of the Somrak family!

> We spent a great deal of time researching kitchen designers. We found Darlene Somrak during an unplanned trip along Richmond Road. We stopped in Somrak Kitchens and from the start were impressed with Darlene. Not only by her friendliness but by her extreme knowledge of not only kitchen cabinets but of construction, design, and implementation. After a visit to our home Darlene suggested closing a doorway and moving a wall which enabled us to have a fantastic kitchen. There was no pressure from her for us to make immediate decisions as she listened to our ideas as well. Once everything was decided upon she put us in touch with Chris Vogel,of Suburban Carpentry who was a perfectionist! He was very reliable and so knowledgeable about everything from placement of the cabinets to installing the appliances.
> Our gratitude for both Darlene and Chris cannot be overstated.

> I can't go on enough about how amazing it is to work w/Darlene. She has an uncanny sense of mind melding w/the client - taking your basic, well researched idea and take it to a new level. Who knew about the option of a great wood countertop instead of granite or quartz? Darlene is always willing to add some quirky, yet client specific, details. It's like you but on steroids! Wouldn't attempt a project w/o Darlene - AND she's fun!!!

> Working with Somrak Kitchens and in particular Darlene Somrak was a great experience. Darlene listened to my concerns with my existing kitchen and offered a great solution to them. I now have a more efficient work flow between my kitchen and dining room as well as additional counter space. She also came up with a few creative ideas that solved problems I didn't know I had. By simply repositioning my pantry, I had space for a new mud room. My house has curved walls in several locations. She incorporated the curves into my design to enhance the overall appearance of the rooms. Darlene suggested using some existing features of my old kitchen in my new design which allowed me to stay within the budget that we originally discussed. I love the quality of the cabinets that were installed as well as the professionalism of all of the workman that were used in this process. I highly recommend working with this group.

> We interviewed several contractors for our project but so happy we chose Somrak Kitchens to design and renovate our kitchen. We have been working with them since January and it has been a pleasure and stress free experience every step of the way, from the beautiful contemporary design and material choices to the actual remodeling process which just began a few weeks ago. Darlene and Bob are functioning not only as the CKDS but as the general contractors for our project standing behind every small detail with excellent personalized service. Their firm also offers a great variety of product choices. We can't wait for the final result in just a few short weeks.

> Darlene Somrak was amazing in so many ways. Not only did she sit with us for hours to find out how we worked in our kitchen, she was also able to develop a beautiful great room kitchen area for our whole family to enjoy. Her knowledge and experience were invaluable. She was able to problem solve difficult areas as well as provide many practical storage solutions. Our kitchen/Great room is a joy to work and live in. I especially love my cork board for "pinning" invites etc. and I love my pull out drawer with dividers to store those lids for the pans that have always been homeless. Darlene thought of clever solutuions for everything making cooking and cleaning a joy. Her installer was a genius and all cabinets, lighting etc. were installed on time and in a very professional manner. They were a pleasure to have in our home. I highly recommend Somrak Kitchens, not only for kitchens but any other home project that requires thoughtful creativity, professionalism and WOW factor.

> Darlene Somrak was recommended to me last spring when my husband and I consulted a designer we knew. Darlene is friendly, resourceful and is a very good listener. She was ready and able to find us the right quality for the cabinetry we desired. She remained conscious of our budget and needs throughout the relatively few meetings we had together. We are very happy with our kitchen remodel and also with the service Darlene provided and would happily recommend her as an astute design professional.

**★★★★★ — druthenberg, Feb. 2014**

> A search for a local distributor to look at cabinets led me to Somrak for my kitchen remodel. Darlene suggested a better cabinet line and also redid my architect-supplied plan to one that fit the space much better and increased storage capacity. As with all remodels, timing was critical for removal, utility relocation, and cabinet and appliance replacement. We were never out of step, nor out of spec and minimal disruption over the holidays was a tremendous bonus. Suburban Contractors did a superb job with installation. Darlene has been in the business for more years than she likes to admit, but her command of the latest trends and technology, coupled with her eye for understanding your individual taste, makes it easy to recommend Somrak Kitchens for any new construction or remodeling projects. We love our new kitchen and only wonder why we waited 20 years.

**★★★★★ — montanavacahome, Dec. 2013**

> Somrak Kitchens has helped us design a fabulous kitchen in our current home and is now helping us to design cabinets in our vacation home. Not only do they provide kitchen design services, but they will provide beautiful cabinets for many other rooms. We love working with Darlene Somrak, she pays attention to all the details of design so you don't have to worry if everything will come together as planned! I highly recommend Darlene Somrak and her team!

**★★★★★ — Lisa Vigil Schattinger, Jan. 2013**

> I had pre-made cabinets installed in my bedroom and office space. They took quite a bit of custom configuring to make them fit in each of the spaces. Darlene Somrak was terrific through the whole process. She is very experienced with old houses and knew a lot of the details that needed to be planned for in order to make the installation work smoothly. She was happy to work with me in the price-point I was looking at and the cabinets are beautiful and have worked exactly as I had hoped. When I had a small problem with a drawer 6 months after installation, she was very responsive and got the problem worked out quickly.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Pantry door, please, please, please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Charming, perfect, wonderful, fabulous....love

A: The homeowner had this pantry door custom made.

**Q: Newly lacquered cabinet touch ups** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My new kitchen cabinets were just installed and lacquered (frames in place and doors off site). I'm noticing quite a few places that will require touch up - both edges where spray was missed and dings made during install. Is this normal? And will touch up areas be as durable? Waiting for my painter to come back and address.

A: I agree with everyone else. I hope there is a written warranty on these cabinets.

**Q: kitchen help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Should I replace my kitchen cabinets or have them refinished. They are built in cabinets that attach to
the wall of the house. The kitchen cabinets match the doors throughout the house and the built in hutch in our dining room. Prior to us buying the house, there was a mouse problem. I noticed droppings under the sink cabinets and have cleaned them up; however, there was a space in the toe board and I noticed more droppings under there. If I want to save these cabinets then I would need to remove the wood under the sink and clean up the area and try to replace it. Trying to decide if it is worth saving these cabinets or getting new ones? Thanks for your help.

A: I suggest that you visit a few local kitchen cabinet showrooms to see first hand all of the benefits of new cabinets like self-closing drawers and soft-close doors. Not to mention all of the other great interior accessories. Most well made custom & semi-custom factory made cabinets have a catalized finish and a lifetime warranty. The other benefit in replacing the cabinets is a chance to improve upon the layout. Talk to a kitchen professional who can give you an estimate on new cabinets to see if they are within your budget. Good Luck!

**Q: Need help with my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I have some concerns with this kitchen plan. The stove is 30" and I don't want to use a 30" hood to emphasis the narrowness. What can I do? Also, I'm concerned about the other 153" wall having no style (too much counter and too many cabinets in a row. Another concern is the sink. Isn't it too close to the corner? Please give me any info you would be so kind to do. How about the refrigerator wall?

A: WOW. Talk about wall-to-wall cabinets. More is not always better. In this kitchen I would not want to drain a big pot of pasta. There is really no benefit to going around the 3rd corner. I wold also relocate the refrig. The refrig. location in this plan really creates a huge visual block to the room entrance and could easily go somewhere else in the room. I notice that there are no windows. You could design some lighted upper cabinet areas with glass doors to give the feel of a window. This is a great space and you could have a spectacular kitchen with the right guidance. Good Luck.

**Q: How can I update my kitchen within the given constraints?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I recently moved into his childhood home. We need to update many areas including the kitchen. While he is okay with most of my ideas, he will not budge on changing the 1990s cabinets in any way other than hardware. Also, he insists on a natural hickory floor which I love the idea of for all of the house except the kitchen because I'm afraid the grains in the cabinets and flooring will compete and be too busy. Even so, those are done deals.

Having said that, my plan is to paint the walls Benjamin Moore's Landscape (green). This color will continue into our family room which runs together with the kitchen. The countertops will be quartz (polished Pearl White which has grayish/silverish flecks throughout it. The backsplash will be small glass tiles that are a pale green, blue, and white. Appliances and sink will be stainless. In order to try to tone down all of the wood, I'd like to change out the stools with ones that are either painted or metal. Not sure about window treatments yet. As you can surely surmise, I am no designer, and any ideas, help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A: It would be really a shame to invest the amount you are considering to get new flooring, counters, glass tile splashes and new appliances and still have these cabinets. I think everyone would agree that a hickory floor with red oak cabinets will result in a busy look.

**Q: Resale value: replace or reface kitchen??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are putting our house up for sale in 1-2 years.
The kitchen has ugly oak cabinets.
Should we replace the entire kitchen with truckload cabinets from Home Depot or equivalent? Or should we just replace the door fronts?
Obviously we are replacing backsplash, countertop and hardware.
What are your thoughts?? Thanks!!!

A: Whatever you do, please get rid of the arched cabinet doors. We have not sold these since the early 90's and have not sold cabinets with the arch on the base cabinets since the 70's. Don't get me started on the hardware location... that as you already know has to change. I would install new unfinished paint grade doors and drawer fronts and paint the doors and cabinet boxes. Good luck.
