Cheryl agreed to a job of painting garage doors and staining large wood front doors in late 2018. She was very busy and could not start job until about 6 weeks after we committed. We paid her the 50% deposit and proceeded to wait nearly 6 weeks. Just a few days before the job was about to start she advised us that she could not sand the door to the level necessary to stain it, she could only paint them, and provided a paint sample of something slightly different than we expected. When we voiced our displeasure at her last minute change notice and told her we needed to take a couple of days to consult with our designer on the last minute changes she made, Cheryl's response to us was to reiterate how busy she was, what “her process” was, and how any possible delays might affect her. She was more concerned with that than making sure we were happy and our needs were met as precisely as possible. 2 days after Cheryl advised us of the changes, which was 2 days before project start date, we told Cheryl we agree to her change to paint on large wood front doors and she can move ahead, just to slightly “tone down” from the sample she provided. Cheryl’s response was, after 6 weeks of us waiting and 2 days before job start, to cancel the job and tell us she is sending back our deposit. Getting involved with Cheryl was a total waste of our time. Ughhhh! **Comment from Cheryl Phan:** > I would like to start out by saying, if you’re going to give someone a review good or bad it would be appropriate to give yourself a name, NY, Fl is not a name. I have been in this business a long time (Over 18 years) and have built a great reputation. Like most businesses you meet people that are just too difficult to work with, so you learn when to walk away. > > My first clue to walk away from the job should have been when he waved his hand at me after our first meeting and said “We’re done” like he was dismissing me. I understand he had other contractors to talk to, but that’s no way to end a conversation with someone. > > As an artist/faux finisher I know what products to use and what steps need to be done to get the best results. Every finish is unique, and no two finishes are alike. There are multiple steps, products and techniques used to create the prefect finish. > > What he was asking me to do was not going to work and I tried to explain the process, but he kept telling me he didn’t want to do it that way. So, on Saturday afternoon, 2 days before the job was to start, he has his designer call me and I explained it to him and the designer agreed with me. > > At 5pm that same day the client texts me and says he wants to see another sample by Monday morning before he goes to work for his approval. The last-minute change was because he decided to make the change at the last minute. > This is when I decided to walk away from the job and return his deposit. I truly don’t like to end a business relationship like this. I pride myself on the quality of my work, showing up on-time and getting my work done on schedule.
