**Q: Dryvit--tell me what you know.** *(in Building a Home)*

The building we are renovating has mismatched brick from an old addition and is somewhat unattractive. It is in a TIF district and needs improvement. We have a proposed exterior plan from an architect which includes, among other things...Dryvit. I would prefer to paint the brick but dh will not. 
When I asked the architect about Dryvit after reading some scary stuff on the Internet, he said the problems were due to contractors that didn't know what they were doing. 
What's the scoop on Dryvit?

A: I work for JAD Exteriors we have repaired almost 4000 Dryvit
homes and reclad nearly 300 in the Chicago metro area. There is a cutoff line
for most Dryvit homes worth remembering year 2000. After that date drainage
systems became common in most Dryvit systems. This allowed the incidental moisture
intrusion to find a way out and helps the system avoid many of the problems
that gave EIFS a bad name. With that said “there is nothing wrong with Dryvit”
the fault can be with poor installation such as caulking and sealant joints,
diverter flashing and chimneys. The second cause, maintenance and lack of
periodic (EIFS) inspection. 
The same issues are coming to light with thin stone and
brick (veneer) exterior cladding. Lack of proper house wrap, ice and water
shield and drainage system behind the system are showing up now that enough
product has been installed and time in the field. (See our page on Houzz : JADExteriors)
